Posted August 3, 201213 yr comment_5511837 VQ - Excellent (24/7) 1. Les Thornton vs. Jose Luis Rivera Solid opener. Les is all snug and shit as they go nearly the whole match on the mat. A lot of the holds were pretty standard and there wasn't a lot added to each hold but Thornton would occasionally pop Rivera really hard in the back with clubs during a head scissors. Thornton did awesomely club the ever living shit out of Rivera in the face as he put him in a reverse chin lock. That ruled. Rivera had a couple of nifty escapes out of the head scissors Thornton kept applying but would always get caught back in it. They abandoned the mat work and Les brutally forearmed Rivera which sent Rivera to the floor. Thornton worked on Rivera from the apron with some stiff clubs to the chest and a few more forearms. Rivera ended up getting back in the ring with a sunset flip but Thornton kicked out at two. Rivera then got a near fall off of a cross body off the ropes and went for a springboard cross body from the second rope but Thornton reversed it into a pin for the win. I liked some of the mat work and Thornton worked pretty stiff but nothing jumped out at me. 2. George Steele vs. Tiger Chung Lee This was hilariously entertaining actually. I mean it wasn't any good but funny as hell. George throws random shit at Lee who's on the floor before the match. Lee gets pissed and hits George with his kendo stick. The ref has to convince Lee to get rid of the kendo stick so the match can start. Steele chases Lee out of the ring after biting his arm. Once Lee gets back into the ring, George bites his face and pokes him in the eyes several times. Lee goes back to the floor but comes back in and avoids a charge from Steele who surprisingly takes a great turnbuckle bump. Lee brings Steele to the floor and smashes Steele's head on a production table. Lee goes back into the ring but George is pissed and fucking picks up the production table and throws it in the ring. The crowd was going apeshit for him here. The ref gets the table out and Steele hits Lee with a foreign object then eats a turnbuckle. Lee comes after him but George turns around and gives him a choke thrust to the mat for the three. That is hysterical. Steele won with a goddamn choke thrust to the mat. He then ate another turnbuckle, threw the cushioning at the referee and Lee and went completely insane. This was incredibly amusing but not a good match by any standards. 3. Brutus Beefcake vs. George Wells This was a good and super fun match but ended up being hurt by a botched sequence towards the end of the match. Beefcake is such a douche to start but Wells gives him a couple of three point stance tackles which Beefcake sells well. Beefcake hit the floor to stall and came back in only to get a three point stance tackle again from Wells. They end up both going to the floor where Wells misses a charge and hits the ring post hurting his arm on impact. Beefcake immediately starts working on the arm. He launches Wells into the turnbuckle in a hammer lock arm first. Wells took a massive bump on the collision with the turnbuckle. Then Beefcake kneed his hurt arm and slammed it really hard onto the bottom rope. Beefcake then reapplied the hammer lock with his foot this time and fell back to put more pressure on the arm. Wells eventually formulating a comeback and there was a great spot where both guys were trading punches on their knees. That was awesome. The crowd was really into it at this point as Wells was getting in some fun offense. Then the match spiraled quickly when they botched a flying head scissors and Beefcake just face planted and landed on his head. Wells looked confused as shit and the crowd started booing and losing interest in the match. There was this weird state of confusion for a minute and Wells added disappointment by not selling the arm that Beefcake had worked on so long. The finish ended up being very good but it was too late. Wells missed a charge in the corner and took a tremendous bump into the turnbuckle that was followed by a really nasty running knee to the back from Beefcake. Beefcake held Wells' tights and got the pin for the win. This was a legitimately good match that was going towards the direction of a nomination but collapsed with that embarrassing sequence before the finish. It's too bad because I really want to find a match that no one would think could ever make a set and unfortunately this wasn't one of those. 4. Pedro Morales vs. Mr. X Boring as piss. Mr. X just stalled for five or six minutes then threw one clothesline for a two count. Pedro hit a few moves including a shot to the stomach which Mr. X took a great bump for, a body slam, and locked in the Boston Crab for the quick win. There was way too much bullshit and stalling going on. This shit should have ended way earlier than it did. I was nearly bored to tears by the end of it. 5. Paul Orndorff vs. Roddy Piper Totally wild, insane, and awesome brawl. Piper yells "Come on out Paula! I won't hurt you!" on the mic before the match which was tremendous. Both guys say "Fuck you" to the introductions and rip their entrance attire off. Once the bell rings they're wailing on each other in a wild slug fest that goes to the floor. There they brawled even more intensely by using weapons. Piper hit Orndorff with some fucking random ass object and they both hit each other really hard with a production table. They took the fight back into the ring. Now Orndorff has control and gives Piper some elbows and slows the match down a little bit. Piper stooges a little for Orndorff then awesomely does his signature eye poke while still selling Orndorff's previous onslaught. Piper is in control now and starts being a great douche. Orndorff manages to get in a sunset flip in the process pulling Piper's trunks half way down. Piper kicked out after a near fall and wrestled most of the rest of the match with half his ass hanging out which was a tremendous visual, hilarious, and added to the chaos of the match. Piper punted the shit out of Orndorff who sold it tremendously. Orndorff got another near fall off of a reverse roll up but Piper continued to take over right afterwards. Piper ended up getting Orndorff in the sleeper and locking it in really good but Orndorff fought out of it which led to this awkward exchange where Piper gave Orndorff a side headlock take down. I didn't know why the hell they would do that but it made sense afterwards as Orndorff reversed it into a head scissors that he cranked viciously and violently on and it looked like he was damaging Piper's windpipe or some shit. Then they did a power spot where Orndorff powered off the mat with Piper and got another near fall off of a backslide. After that Orndoff gave Piper a running cross body which sent both guys over the ropes and back to the floor. They went back to wild brawling there and Orndorff blocked a microphone stand shot from Piper and instead Piper got the shit beat out of him with the same microphone stand by Orndorff. Both guys were counted out during the melee but Piper came back in after the match and decked Orndorff then fucking cold cocked the referee. He hilariously threw his hands in the air in celebration and mocked the crowd. As he was leaving the ring Orndorff got back to his senses and went after him. They both fucking savagely slugged one another in the aisle as fans started flooding the walk way. All of the sudden we see Orndorff with a chair swinging wildly as Piper scurries to the back with the crowd crammed into the aisle way. This was a total blast and a wild brawl. I'm giving this a solid nomination but I think it's a borderline easy nomination. 6. Randy Savage vs. Salvatore Bellomo This was just average. Savage stalled and bickered with fans meanwhile Bellomo would get in sunset flips and small packages for near falls to surprise Savage. Savage spent most of the match on the floor either by himself or with Bellomo throwing him around. Savage threw Bellomo into the Boston Garden barricade really hard and did his awesome top rope double ax handle to Sal in the big open area on the Boston Garden floor. Savage brought Bellomo back in and made quick work of him as he slammed him and did his patented flying elbow drop for the win. There was some fun stuff in this but other than that this was very by the numbers. 7. Terry Funk vs. Rick McGraw This was pretty fun and Terry was great but this went too long. Terry bumped like a maniac for McGraw as he bounced off the ropes after getting swung into the turnbuckle and did the Buddy bump. Terry got all bent out of shape some more before low blowing McGraw and throwing him to the floor. He hilariously bickered with fans and went into the crowd. As he got back into the ring the crowd started showering him with debris and he put his dukes up and challenged the entire Boston Garden which was hysterical. McGraw got back into the ring and hit a sunset flip for a great near fall and gave Terry an atomic drop who landed on his ass and took an absurd bump to the floor but the camera didn't fucking catch it. Terry got draped over the Boston Garden barricade and a fan nailed him point blank range with debris in the face and Terry fucking sold it which was awesome. McGraw chopped the shit out of him a few times and they had a head on collision back inside the ring. Terry was able to slip in the sleeper though and McGraw passed out giving Funk the win. After the match, Terry branded McGraw with his branding iron but McGraw recovered and chased Terry out of the ring with Terry's branding iron. Terry was a blast but McGraw didn't serve any real purpose in this match and this went too long. Terry was definitely awesome and on fire in this though. 8. Ricky Steamboat/The Junk Yard Dog vs. Don Muraco/Mr. Fuji Very fun match. It's JIP a little bit as we start right away with Muraco tied in the ropes getting pounded on by JYD and Steamboat choking the shit out of Mr. Fuji with a belt. Steamboat and JYD trade turns chopping and headbutting both Muraco and Fuji who stooge pretty well for them. Steamboat and JYD do a couple of fun double team moves with Steamboat ramming JYD's head with Muraco's and then Steamboat assist JYD in doing a head rocker on I think Fuji. The match finally gets some sort of control and JYD and Steamboat are still having fun until Muraco lows blows Steamboat behind the referee's back. Fuji then comes in and headbutts Steamboat low which pisses the crowd off. Steamboat gets worked over in the heels corner and is choked excessively. He fights back by reversing a suplex on Fuji and hitting his own but splashes Fuji's knees and goes back to being FIP. Muraco and Fuji continue to choke and cheat away on Steamboat but Steamer eventually chops his way out of their corner and makes the hot tag to JYD. The crowd fucking loves JYD as he comes in and throws some great punches on Muraco. They collide heads though and both guys are down looking for the tag. JYD tags Steamboat and Steamer cleans house. Steamboat wins the match for his team with a top rope flying cross body to Mr. Fuji. After the match though Muraco and Fuji do a beat down on both JYD and Steamboat. They isolate Steamboat, give him a double clothesline, and Fuji throws salt in his eyes. The crowd is pretty upset afterwards. This was a really fun match with some decent work mixed in. I really enjoyed the wild atmosphere of the opening sequence. The problem with this is that the heat segment could have been much better than it was. Final Analysis This show was an absolute blast as the crowd was really into most of it from start to finish. We got one nominated match and several other really fun matches that I wish could have given us more. I was still satisfied with this show though as I did enjoy myself a good bit.
