Posted August 27, 201213 yr comment_5513521 VQ - Excellent (24/7) 1. Sivi Afi vs. Rene Goulet This was a solid opener. They had some good mat work to start. Goulet put on a cross arm breaker and Afi fought out of it. There was a long side headlock spot but it worked well because Afi wrenched the hold. Afi got a near fall off of a sunset flip early on too. Afi was got caught with a knee by Goulet off the ropes shortly after leaving the side headlock. Goulet gave him a double foot stomp which ruled and put on El Scorpion or the Claw. Afi eventually fought out of it and got in a mini-comeback until Goulet was able to re-apply the hold. Goulet also stomped on Afi's hand which was awesome. Afi fought out of it a second time and got some good near falls off of a jumping headbutt and a running cross body. Goulet was then whipped into the turnbuckle and took a great bump into it and Afi hit a top rope cross body for the pin and the win. This was okay for what it was and Goulet did some cool shit. 2. Jake Roberts vs. Jose Luis Rivera This was alright. Jake worked a headlock or sleeper when he was on offense and Rivera worked over Jake's arm. The work wasn't really extensive so nothing special happened. Jake hit a short arm clothesline after getting his arm worked over and sold his arm which was cool. Jake hit his knee lift a few times and it sounded cool. Rivera got a nice spurt of offense towards the end and hit a back body drop and clothesline that sent Jake to the ropes who took an amusing bump into them. Not long after that, Rivera himself was caught in the ropes and Jake hit him with another knee lift. That was followed by the DDT from Jake who then got the pin for the win. This was decent and had solid psychology but nothing really stood out that made it anything more than that. 3. The Crush Girls vs. Judy Martin/Donna Christianello This was a fun match. The crowd was really into the Crush Girls by the end of the match so it made the last few minutes really exciting. There wasn't much structure in this and it was a lot of back forth stuff. It also wasn't a spot fest either. Martin and Christianello were good stooges for Chigusa and Lioness. The finish was really fun with the Crush Girls winning the match after Asuka gave Christianello a giant swing. This didn't have any real tag structure but it was definitely fun in spots. 4. Jim Neidhart vs. Scott McGhee This was a pretty good competitive squash. Anvil was overpowering McGhee at the start and mocking him. However, McGhee got two nearfalls from a roll up and sunset flip. Anvil regained the advantage and tossed McGhee to the floor. He gave McGhee a hot shot onto the Boston Garden barricade and then brought him back into the ring and pulled his hair and smashed the back of his head on the mat. Anvil went for a suplex but McGhee reversed it into his own suplex. McGhee fought hard but missed a corner charge into the turnbuckle and Anvil power slammed him for the pin and the win. This was a fun and solid competitive squash match and the crowd was into it a little bit too. 5. Ricky Steamboat vs. Bret Hart Excellent match. The Boston Garden crowd is phenomenal throughout this entire show and they really get wild during this match. Bret starts the match by Pearl Harboring Steamer and getting the early advantage. However, Bret would soon get launched chest first into the turnbuckle and Steamer would take over. Steamer would then work on Bret's arm. The arm work here ruled and was really aggressive by Steamer. He used the turnbuckle to ram Bret's arm into and really wrenched in the holds. There was a tremendous spot where Bret tried to back suplex Steamer but Steamer landed on his feel and hit a beautiful crescent kick to Bret's face. The transition into Bret's heat segment was great too. He caught Steamer with a really nasty twisting neck breaker that looked like it legitimately could have broken Steamer's neck. This portion of the match was really awesome as well. Bret did a good job of pacing his offense and Steamer was terrific selling everything. All of Steamer's comeback were timed very well and I loved Bret slamming him on the Boston Garden floor. The finishing run was done quite well too. Bret had gotten several near falls on Steamer and now Steamer had his turn to get some offense. There were some great near falls towards the end. The referee got squashed in the corner and Bret hit a devastating clothesline but the referee was too rattled to make the pin. Bret hit a cross body on Steamer not long after that but Steamer reversed it into a pin attempt and got the pin for the win. The crowd went wild and so did an upset Jimmy Hart after the match. This was a really awesome and brilliantly worked match with a great crowd and a lot of excitement. EASY NOMINATION. 6. Tito Santana vs. Randy Savage (WWF IC Title) This had some fun and entertaining stuff but didn't bring in anything great. Randy played chicken for the majority of the match but did take some wild bumps. The best one being a head over heels bump in the Boston Garden crowd. Savage used his cunning to get the advantage and took over for some time hitting multiple variations of the ax handle for near falls. Tito fought back with his usual fiery offense. He hit the flying forearm but strangely relinquished the cover and dropped an elbow instead. He returned to the cover but didn't get the three. Savage tried to escape Tito's wrath by sliding under the bottom rope and to the floor but Tito kept cutting him off. The ref, Danny Davis, continuously pulled Tito off of Randy but eventually got pushed to the mat. Davis disqualified Tito and Randy retained the belt. This was a typical match of there's but sped up way too much and not enough good filler. 7. Velvet McIntyre/Dawn Marie vs. Bull Nakano/Dump Matsumoto Bull and Dump being in 86' WWF is a pretty novel thing but this was disappointing. It was definitely amusing to watch Bull and Dump scuttle around the ring and make animal noises at Velvet and Dawn. Bull got her arm worked over for a few minutes before she was able to gain control. Both Velvet and Dawn got thrown around and hair tossed for several minutes while Bull and Dump made funny faces. This was just a bunch of half-assed stuff that wasn't going anywhere. There was one great spot where I think Velvet tried to make a comeback but was cutoff by a tremendous wall charge from I believe Bull. Velvet sneaked in a victory roll on Bull to grab the win for the finish. This was pretty disappointing and I was hoping for more but I at least enjoyed the novelty of it. 8. Cpl. Kirchner vs. Iron Mike Sharpe A word to describe this match would be goofy. That's it. Goofy. Mike Sharpe is a goof. Kirchner is a goof. The best spots in this match were really good actually. Sharpe was being a goof and got tossed to the floor where the momentum took him into the Boston Garden barricade which knocked it right over. The other great spot was Sharpe's passe toss of Kirchner into the Boston Garden barricade a few minutes later in the match. It was a pretty vicious bump too. Nothing else in the match was important and Kirchner beat Sharpe by blocking a shot from Sharpe's metal forearm and using it on him instead. Yeah, this was goofy and nothing more. 9. Ted Arcidi vs. Barry O Well, Arcidi chased Barry O around, Barry O got tossed around, Barry O got a lucky advantage, Arcidi came back and put in the bear hug. Barry O gave up and the match was over. Tremendous bout. 10. Hulk Hogan/Junk Yard Dog vs. Terry Funk/Dory Funk Jr. Fun match. Terry was awesome in this. His stooging act is so fucking great. He had another hilarious stare down with Gorilla before the match. He mistakenly tried to headbutt JYD and bumped and stooged for him excellently. The best part of the match was Terry's drunken state on the floor and getting his feet tangled up in production wires. Most of the match wasn't very impressive and contained a bunch of no selling from Hulk and JYD. Dory was actually a pretty good stooge in this but Terry still smoked him at it. Terry did some cool shit like choking Hulk with wrist tape and lassoing JYD with a fucking rope. Hulk saved JYD with a big clothesline on Terry for the win. Terry was a blast and everything else was just along for the ride. Final Analysis This was a bad show with an excellent match on it. It came at right about the middle of the card. Before and after it are pretty forgetful. I'm hoping 86' will become as get as it looks to be on paper.
