It'll be interesting to see what they do now. I almost feel like they should have him come out, admit the neck injury, and then have Stephanie strip him of the title. That way, you can always say he never lost it and you can turn Payback's main event into some sort of tournament/scramble/6-man match involving Evolution and the Shield.

 

The only silver lining I can see here is that, in 97', Austin's neck injury ended up leading to him being even more over than he was before it. He continued to appear on TV regularly and his character just got stronger and stronger. Maybe a few months of Bryan doing something similar could keep him fresh and potentially even lead to another WM main event.

Agreed on Fox. And damn, Bryan needing neck surgery is a punch in the gut. One you could see coming, knowing it's going to happen eventually, yet it still hits you square in the gut.

You would think they would have to put the belt on Cena. Batista is leaving, Kane is Kane, Big Show is damaged beyond repair, Orton is so toast as a top guy for now, Wyatt and the Shield guys aren't ready.

 

Maybe H and he drops it to Reign at SS. I have no idea

Feel bad for Bryan. Given how WWE operates and the nature of the business and media now if he's gone through the Summer the idea of him being a long term breakout star is pretty much shot to hell.

With all the buildup in the last 4 or 5 months of the YES movement and the incredible reaction to winning the belt, it seemed like the reaction to having to go for neck surgery seemed really flat. Maybe the fans don't actually believe based on history can't really blame.

Bryan has been less over for a while now. Still easily the most over guy in the company, but they haven't done him in favors in recent months

We still don't know how long he's gonna be out.

 

The original report said he would hopefully be back for Payback and surely for Money In The Bank. I wouldn't be so doom and gloom.

WWE World Heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan will be taking several weeks off due to a neck injury. Bryan is expected to announce the injury on tonight’s episode of WWE RAW.

Bryan will most likely need a minimally-invasive neck “procedure.” If it goes well, he could be back in time for the June 1st WWE Payback pay-per-view in Chicago. Otherwise, he’ll be back by Money in the Bank.

A source who is currently backstage at RAW says he’s been very quiet all day.

I fully expect that if Bryan does have to drop the belt it will go to Batista as sort of an offering. I mean they told him he was getting the belt anyway and now he gets to do it his way

He's been flying around and taking more risky bumps since working in WWE though.

 

Although I agree it's not a huge change from his indy days, it's still a noticeable difference. He always makes little twitches this his style and ever since he started in WWE, he's been taking a lot more punishment.

There's no way the diving headbutt helps and it's likely a big detriment. It's not particularly over either. No reason to do it.
