This was a really clever match. Really clever. So much of how it's worked is about letting Embry's heel turn resonate. Embry and Young aren't a well-oiled machine in terms of timing their teamwork, but why would anyone expect them to be? I'm probably reading too much into it, but it seems intentional. Embry and Jarrett have a great roll-around brawl and Jarrett plays FIP while Dundee riles up the crowd from the apron. Young eats the loss and ends up getting attacked. Gary Young is a babyface and people are cheering him. Well, I didn't expect that partnership to last. Young makes a comeback and gets major fan support, which is just surreal, but Steve Austin attacks Young from behind. This isn't a traditional great match, but it tells a really interesting story, and I'm glad it's here. (I don't think the date is right, but whatever.)

The definite highlight was Embry and Jarrett's microphone battle leading to an awesome roll-around fisticuff brawl, not far behind Lawler/Snowman and Jarrett/Gilbert as far as those go. Dundee pins Young in a basic but really cool-looking finish, and Young is blamed for it afterward by Embry and Yamamoto. After a shove to the mat, Embry pretends to calm things down and then cheapshots Young from behind. The beatdown is on, but after getting rammed into Tojo's briefcase, Young does a Hulk-Up and makes a comeback before Steve Austin runs in to help Embry out. Young makes for an incredibly unlikely babyface but I like where this is going.

The Texas/Tennessee feud does not extend to USWA-TX. Yanemoto is wearing a Augusta Masters jacket. Embry makes sure he has no fans rooting for him. Jarrett/Embry go back and forth dodging each other punches. Dundee was almost invisible until the last couple minutes. Young and Embry go at it after with Embry beating up Young with help of Austin. They teased Embry turning on Young so it was executed well in the end.

This match was intentionally clunky, as some other posters have stated above. There's no way that natural enemies Embry and Young can coexist for long, regardless of which side of the fence they're on, and we get the expected Embry turn at the end after Young eats the pin. Other than that and the brief but vicious brawl between Jeff and Embry, there's nothing to make this one really stand out. That's not to say it's bad, but rather that it did its job, albeit unspectacularly.

The fact that the fans sided so quickly with an arrogant jackass like Young is a testament to how much Embry's actions over the past few weeks have hurt them. It'll be interesting to see these two men's roles reversed after seeing so much of face Embry vs. heel Young ever since the death of World Class angle began two years ago.

Embry's doing the same type of pro-Texas stuff here that he's doing in Memphis, only the home state crowd is firmly on the Tennesseeans' side. Of course, the Tennessee guys aren't cutting the same type of anti-Texas promos here that they are in Memphis. If only the Texas fans, especially the women, knew what Lawler's been saying about them.............

I guess Ak's out of the picture now that we're seeing Tojo in Texas. That's too bad, if only because I'd have liked to see Embry as a member of Devastation, Inc. after all the stuff that went down between the two of them.

  • GSR changed the title to [1991-03-01-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett & Bill Dundee vs Eric Embry & Gary Young
