Why does Jeter have the be the "face of baseball" to so many? I know he's made a couple big plays in important moments...

But, he's far from being the best player... heck, he's not even been amongst the top 2 shortstops in his league for years.

Plus, he's not cute. He looks like a Mr. Potato Head.

I think Jeter gets it more cause he's loyal to the Yanks is all... I can't find any other reason.

...first person to say he's clutch DIES. The man is not clutch at all. Just came up big a few times.

Cubs, to my knowledge, didn't make a strong pursuit after Percival in the offseason. I never wanted them to, and so far, it's looked like the right choice. Guy's spent time on the DL and been unrelaible. Let's not forget costly. Besides, the closer role is finally not an issue for the Cubs.

Getting back to the Clement thing, Steve Stone said he talked with him and the Cubs never even offered him a new deal. Arbitration, but no multi-year contract, which he deserved after how he performed the last couple of seasons. Just stings to see him be elvated to star status now that he's getting the run support, and thus the wins. Especially when our 1-2 punch (remember the "next Schilling & Johnson?") has a grand total of seven wins between the both of them, Zam's regressed, Maddux is really showing his age, and the fifth slot has been a revolving door. Cubbies got bigger issues than the rotation, but Clement in there wouldn't hurt at all.

In reference to the actual ASG, I'm hoping for Tuesday to get hear soon. I don't think I can listen to the same topics rehashed (i.e. the starting pitchers) one more time.

Timlin probably isn't the most deserving choice but the manager should be allowed one sentimental pick.

He shouldn't, and I think you and I would be quite upset if it were a different manager besides Francona.
Maybe so, but there is a preceent set for a manager taking one of his boys along for the ride. Torre got to do it and damn it, so should Francona! :) At least Clement got in. Tito was getting killed by his own players for not picking him originally.

Baseball wants the All-Star Game to have meaning? I don't get it.

So it should have no meaning?

If the game means so much, why are some of baseball's best players not in the game?

They don't deserve to be there this year?

Miracle Fielding Boy just lost out on the internet vote to Scott Podsednik. That never should have happened.

Why not? Scott is having a better year on a better team.

And Michael Young is more deserving than Jeter???

Yes, he is.

Don't make me laugh.

Sorry.

If I were starting a team right now, the first player I'd take would be Jeter.

Because you are a moron.

No one is more clutch in big games than him,

Games 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the ALCS say hello.

no other shortstop in baseball has more championships,

And this is relevant in what way?

and no other shortstop has to play in a tougher media town.

And no other short stop gets a free pass like Jeter does.

You'll never find a better person to represent baseball than Miracle Fielding Boy.

David Ortiz is a better choice. David doen't go out and fuck strippers all the time.

His numbers easily warrant him being in Detroit, and the fact that he had to be on the list of five players that had to beg for votes is a disgrace to the game.

Why is it a disgrace? The fans said that they didn't want him twice. Forcing something on the fans that they don't want is a disgrace to the game.

First, the fact that home-field advantage is decided by this game is a joke.

It's stupid, but it's not a joke.

Second, can you imagine an NBA All-Star game without Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson?

Sure, Magic Johnson has been retired for years and they didn't stop having an All-Star game after he stopped playing.

Neither can I,

Because you're a retard.

and Jeter is the Jordan of baseball.

Let's see: Jordan was unquestionably the best player in the game when he was playing (save the last two seasons). Jeter is unquestionably the 5th best short stop in the AL.

Third, if this game means so much to the outcome of the World Series, then put the best players out there on the field

That's what they have done.

and forget the "player from every team" concept. Some teams don't have All-Stars, and fans don't want to see those players anyway, especially if they don't deserve it.

This I agree with.

If you want to do that stupid internet vote,

Why is it stupid?

let the fans of those non-deserving players vote their player onto the team, that way, when some team doesn't have a player, only the fans are to blame.

This makes no sense.

The All-Star game is a joke, especially when the best players are not going to be there.

The best players are going to be there (excluding those who are injured).

Miracle Fielding Boy is better than the All-Star game. It makes me sick that he won't be there.

Oh boo hoo.

Dorian:

I think Jeter gets it more cause he's loyal to the Yanks is all... I can't find any other reason.

How much are they paying him? $19 mil a year? I'd be loyal for that money, too. If they didn't grossly overpay him before he reached free agency they would have found out very quickly that he could have been signed for millions less.

who wrote that, michael kay?

"Miracle Fielding Boy is one of the greatest players ever" -MK

Here i go - about to puke in my own mouth

Morgan Ensberg is in, with Scott Rolen being a late scratch to protect his shoulder injury. There's now some debate on who starts. Aramis Ramirez was second in voting, so theoretically, you'd figure he would, but some are saying that since Ensberg replaced Rolen, he's the one who's starting. Of course, you know whose side I'm on here.

Even Bill Simmons thinks the All-Star Game should always include Jeter. Him, and 12 other players.

I read that, and it is truly a ridiculous idea. Think about it. The rationale is that these are the biggest players in baseball, and the ones the fans want to see. Well, the fans VOTE, and clearly those are not always the players they want to see.

Simmons "list" was mostly Sox or ex-Sox and Yankees anyway. If I want expert All-Star advice, I am not going to start by reading the humorist's column.

Another turkey this year. NL started to make a game of it later on, but what in the world was LaRussa thinking not getting at least Clemens in there earlier?

I hate the late-inning bullpen changes, too. Rivera didn't need to make an appearance. I suppose BJ Ryan hasn't proven he can get one out in a two-run game with the bases cleared.
