April 5, 201312 yr Author comment_5541065 Garvin looks great here! No reason he still couldn't have been an upper midcard good hand in WCW. He's the heel in this one. I'm not crazy about one-sided matches with the other guy getting a fluke roll-up, but I do really enjoy watching Garvin do his thing.
April 16, 201312 yr comment_5542272 Garvin did appear to have plenty left in the tank. I thought it was ridiculous that he kicked Invader's ass for 95 percent of the match and then went down to a so-so "heart punch." I'm not opposed to an occasional flash knockout but at least make the shot look devastating. I guess it was something of a PR staple for the local babyface to eat a major beating and then pull out a victory with a late flurry. But Colon was a lot better at the formula from the little I've seen.
April 22, 201312 yr comment_5542778 Garvin looks good and I now know the history of the heart punch in Puerto Rico, but yeah...Garvin delivers harder shots to the chest 10+ times in any given match.
May 17, 201312 yr comment_5544862 If not for the announcer going crazy I wouldn’t have known what the big deal with the finish was. Still feels way too much of a fluke with Garvin in control most of the match. Garvin did sell it like it was devastating though.
October 14, 201311 yr comment_5567350 Heel Garvin rules. I long for a heel run with him in 1988. I always love the Puerto Rico atmosphere. Invader didn't do much here and this match only rose above solid. It mostly felt like a way to showcase 1991 Garvin which was fine by me.
June 23, 201510 yr comment_5679984 This was a nice showcase for Ronnie, who showed that he still was a very good worker who could have had a job anywhere in the world. Excellent psychology involving him working over Gonzales' hand in order to weaken the heart punch; he even stomps the other hand a few times just to be safe. In the end, of course, the heart punch gets him anyway, and he sells it like he was killed, capping off a first-rate performance in an unexpected setting. He would have been a nice addition to the Dangerous Alliance as a kind of mentor/grizzled veteran type had he chosen to return to WCW a little later in the year, though I have no idea who he would have replaced. What belt did Gonzales wear into the ring? Was it the Universal belt or the WWC heavyweight belt?
December 11, 20177 yr comment_5823778 Garvin was still going really strong in 1991! He looked more energetic and in slightly better shape than his 88 match with Colon to me. Invader 1 is really good at selling and gaining sympathy through that and this match plays to that strength a lot. I just wish he'd had more time on offense before the heart punch.
