Chad and Parv complete their review of the Crockett Cup 1987. In this show: thoughts on there being 24 teams in the Crockett Cup, general opinions of Lex Luger, appreciation of Jim Cornette's antics during the Midnight Express's matches during this tournament, has anyone ever taken a piledriver on the floor apart from Ted DiBiase in 1983 and Kurt Angle in 2001?, general surprise at seeing the attitude era / Flair-in-Legacy-era low blow in 1987, debate over whether Flair vs. Windham is really a ***** match, and Chad and Parv's picks for the end of show awards.

Hey, one thing worth referencing for Flair/Windham - not sure if you are already aware - but the match is edited on the Crockett Cup release. I still think it comes off great, but there is a handheld of the matches from that show circulating around and I think Flair/Windham is much better complete.

Glad you mentioned it Loss as it is something we talked about and I expressed my disappointment in the match. I went back last night and looked at it on my Flair compilation that I have and it is the complete match because it is around 25 min in length so I am hoping to watch that version before the next show and give an update on how much the match improved by being in full.

Steamboat took one at the June '89 Clash with Funk, which was enough to make me hate that match, considering how much the piledriver had been built up through the Flair angle and subsequent TV.

 

Flair also took one in the I Quit match with Funk later that year.

Flair/Funk IQuit is one I blanked on. Haven't watched enough memphis but I would assume it has happened there.

Guys, the Great American Bash 87 show is recorded and forthcoming, but -- as we mention on there -- Brian is no longer going to be a regular on this podcast.

 

Brian brought a lot of things to these shows, not least of all terrific knowledge of the angles and storylines that bridge each supercard. He filled in a lot of that information.

 

Since we no longer have this knowledge to draw on in the show itself, could I ask people -- including Brian himself -- to contribute whatever story-related info you can to this thread so we can draw on it for each show?

 

For example, what were the general goings on between the summer of 87 and Starrcade 87? Did Flair get his 1 night with Precious? Just mention whatever you know to get us from A to B. This will help keep the podcast as informed as possible.

 

I'd be really grateful if people could do this, even if they don't listen to the show.

Flair did not get his night with Precious. Ronnie Garvin was waiting in drag and kicked the crap outta Flair.

 

Watching 88 NWA and I do not understand why these men are falling over themselves for Precious.

Meltzer does a good job of tracking comings and goings, backstage stuff and the general state of the business and the office.

 

But the WONs really don't give a lot of detail on storylines and it's not like anyone has bothered to chronicle all this anywhere online.

My advice would be to try to buy things like old wrestling magazines of the era. They are fairly cheap and give you a good overview on the kayfabe world of wrestling.

 

I just watched the 87 TV on 24/7, and half of 88, so I can help on some things.

goodhelmet's Four Horsemen set was a great source for me for filling in a lot of the cracks in the storylines from having previously just seen the commercial tape. Granted, it is pretty huge.

 

Was there any particular storyline reason for the Barry Windham vs. Rick Steiner match?

rainmaker, I have Goodhelmet's amazing Horseman set, but alas only so many hours in the week. I left off somewhere in 1986, pre-Magnum injury. Chad and I are now months away from where I was.
