This is from MSG coming off a hot angle where Sarge whipped Backlund with his riding crop. Going into the match Backlund still has marks from the beating. This is a good little fight with step one in the feud. Sarge was working over Backlund's mid section with some nifty work to it. Monsoon on commentary totally blows it wondering aloud why Sarge is doing it since it doesn't set up the clutch or Cannon. Sarge pulls out his arsenal of bumps to make Backlund look like a million bucks. Backlund showed a lot of aggression when taking it to Slaughter. Building toward the finish Sarge takes a corner bump into his arm. Backlund and the crowd go nuts in anticipation of the cross face chicken wing. We get some back and forth with that until the Wizard gives Slaughter the crop and uses it for a DQ. This was fun stuff.

WWF World Heavyweight Title: Bob Backlund © vs. Sgt. Slaughter (5/23/83)

Backlund is on fire to start and beats Slaughter from pillar to post which Sarge being awesome at selling and bumping for him. The MSG fans are still hot for Backlund here as he takes it to Slaughter until eating a big Slaughter Cannon. Slaughter starts working over Backlund's neck and has his reeling but Bob comes back with a swinging neckbreaker that takes them both out. Sarge though still maintains an advantage but Bob would come back with a vertical suplex. Backlund then came back with a big piledriver but he was too slow to get to Sarge who kicked out. This becomes a total war of attrition with both men trying to put the other one away with big moves. Backlund though would then turn his attention to Sarge's left arm setting up for the crossface chicken wing which he would get and the fans went nuts for this. Grand Wizard would hand Sarge his riding crop which he used for the DQ finish. Sarge when then shove referee Dick Kroll before Backlund would backdrop him and used the riding crop himself sending Sarge running. These two men had some damn good to great matches and this one was right in line with them. Not the best of the bunch but a solid nomination.

BOB BACKLUND vs SGT. SLAUGHTER (05/23/1983; WWF MSG; New York, NY; 00:23:16)

-          Sgt. Slaughter interview hyping the match.

-          Bob Backlund promo

-          Bob attacks Sarge as soon as he is in the ring. The crowd is hot. Sarge bouncing like a pinball over the place. One of the most exciting starts to a match I can think of… almost all thanks to Sarge bumping like a madman. More big bumping by Sarge. Bob dropping nasty elbow points to Sarge’s face.  Sarge back in and Bob steps on his face and grinds the ear. Damn. Bob was in control but Sarge hits him with a Cannon and Sarge takes over. Sarge working the neck and throat and hiding the punches from the ref. Sarge then abuses Bob with back breakers. After several minutes of punishment, Bob hits a forearm and headbutt to slow Sarge down. Bob and Sarge battle for a suplex and Bob gets it. Bob hits an ugly piledriver and the crowd seems lost. Sarge rammed into the ring post and Bob smells blood. He attacks the arm and sets up for the chicken wing. Slaughter gets DQed for hitting Bob with his stick.
I think we have the early Bob-Slaughter matches and the crowd died in the middle of this one. Add the bad ending and we can leave this off. Those first few minutes were hot though.
