Posted March 28, 201312 yr comment_5540117 This all aired on Knoxville TV after SECW folded up and was bought out by Jim Barnett who then sold it to Jim Crockett. Steve Keirn vs. Rocket Monroe (August 1980) HOLY SHIT!!!!!! this is from COLUMBUS CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING which was a show done live in Columbus hosted by the legendary Jim Carlisle the afternoons after they taped at Techwood. They taped shows in Columbus & Macon that would air before the main show so you got up to 4 continous hours of wrestling in those markets every Saturday. Rocket is of course Sputnik's brother and this is a competitive match. "Maniac" Mark Lewin vs. Mike Davis (August 1980) Lewin is a total nut here destroying Davis and using the sleeper hold on him with foam coming out of his mouth. Lewin would of course refuse to wake him up which now seems silly but they sold that like it was a big fucking deal back then. They are selling that Davis could have brain damage as Lewin just lays there with Mephisto putting the cloth over his head. This is a crazy scene as the babyfaces finally come out to wake him up which pisses off Lewin. This is extra material. The Assassin vs. Steve Regal (August 1980) Yep this is Regal before he became electric and he puts up a fight but falls in the end. Dennis Condrey & "Nature Boy" Stanley Lane vs. Mike Davis & Steve Regal (7/26/80) This is from Techwood and yep Condrey & Lane formed a regular team for a short time in GCW. They made a good team as well and this was a nice TV match. Ernie Holmes was in the audience here with Solie selling it. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs. Ron Ritchie (July 1980) Even though we have JCP matches this is still from the GCW Best of Sunday show. Valentine looks good here. Iron Sheik vs. Tony Tossi (July 1980) Tossi really gets in some offense here and has Sheik on the ropes but Sheik would put him away with a big German Suplex. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka & Ray "The Crippler" Stevens vs. Abe Jacobs & Tony Tossi (July 1980) Snuka & Stevens are the NWA World Tag champs and they win fairly quickly. The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams) vs. Cocoa Samoa & Ron Ritchie (September 1980) Very rare Sheeps JCP match and they look good here. Ricky Steamboat vs. Billy Starr (September 1980) Steamer is just so damn good here and throwing some fantastic armdrags. Steamer takes a hard bump to the floor and hurts his back so Starr works it over turning this into a competitive match until Steamer hits a desperation cross body block starting his comeback. Steamer would hit a nice drop toehold out of a fast criss cross spot then turned it into Cattle Mutilation of all things to win. Fun match. Roddy Piper is out next and plays his bagpipes before his match and this is extra material. Roddy Piper vs. Wayne Rogers (October 1980) Squash. "Number One" Paul Jones, Masked Superstar, & Ricky Steamboat vs. Swede Hanson & The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams) (November 1980) That's quite the babyface team and Swede teaming with the Sheeps is interesting as well. Fun back and forth TV match with Steamer hitting a huge cross body block off the top rope on Swede to win. Roddy Piper & Greg "The Hammer" Valentine vs. Matt Borne & Steve Muslin (November 1980) Piper plays the bagpipes again and this is great as the faces are dancing in the ring pissing Piper off. Another competitive match but the heels come out on top. Terry Taylor vs. Mike Davis (6/28/80) Good scientific style match with Taylor who was a rookie here and getting a push in Knoxville getting the win. National TV Title: "Wildfire" Tommy Rich © vs. Dennis Condrey (6/28/80) Rich is vacating the title here as he wants to focus on beating Harley Race for the NWA title and leaving for Memphis in a month. Condrey looks good here working over Rich who holds his own here keeping the challenger from getting any kind of advantage. Condrey would break through though and used his power advantage along with some cheapshots to get over on Rich. Dutch Mantell comes out as Tommy hits the Thesz Press for a nearfall. Tommy would then lock on the sleeper with Dutch going to the apron so Tommy throws Dennis into him then attacks Dutch himself. Condrey hits a backbreaker on Rich for a nearfall but as he tried for another Rich tucked and rolled to get the pin. Fun TV match and although on the short side a lot of the TBS matches were that way so it is what it is. I'm putting this on the block because I think it deserves another look.
