July 17, 200520 yr comment_2893203 It is, but one I'll take up when I have a bit more time. Some years are going to be a synch, but others are going to be real tough.
July 20, 200520 yr comment_2925076 I already did a list at Smarkschoice, so I'll try and help you fill the gaps. 1996 This year has quite a few films from directors I like: A Summer's Tale, Eric Rohmer Goodbye South Goodbye, Hou Hsiao-Hsien Fallen Angels, Wong Kar-Wai He Liu/ The River, Tsai Ming-Liang If you want a US flick, try the Coen Brothers' Fargo or Christopher Guest's Waiting for Guffman. Maybe even Swingers. The UK film Trainspotting was hugely popular that year. It was also the year of Lars Von Trier's Breaking the Waves and the really good Ali/Forman documentary, When We Were Kings. 1981 We already talked about this one on Smarkschoice. I recommend either Das Boot or Pixote. 1978 Not a good year. You could try Deer Hunter. I didn't mind it. My personal pick was a Fassbinder film, The Marriage of Maria Braun. I haven't seen Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick, but it looks interesting. If you like Paul Schrader (screenwriter for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull), he made his directorial debut with a film called Blue Collar. Other than that, it's Grease or Halloween. 1977 Annie Hall. Herzog had a great little film this year called Stroszek. The US has Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever. 1975 You're spoilt for choice this year. Here's the films I love from 1975: Nashville, Robert Altman Fox and his Friends, Rainer Werner Fassbinder The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Werner Herzog Love and Death, Woody Allen There's also One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest & Dog Day Afternoon. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is good if you like that sort of humour. 1965 Not a strong year. If you like Godard, you could check out Alphaville and Pierrot le Fou. Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More is fun. 1963 Fellini's 8 1/2 is the best film from this year, but I also love Godard's Contempt. Hud is a good Paul Newman film and The Great Escape is fun because of the cast. 1958 My favourite film from 1958 is Jacques Tati's Mon Oncle, which finally convinced me of Tati's rich genius, but safer choices are Touch Of Evil (Orson Welles) and Vertigo (Hitchcock). Check out The Hidden Fortress, too, since you like Kurosawa. 1951 I went with Ozu's Early Summer, although it's not one of my favourite Ozu films. I'm surprised you haven't seen Rashomon yet. The Lavender Hill Mob is worth seeing for Alec Guinness. The Day the Earth Stood Still is pretty cool. 1947 I chose the Robert Mitchum film noir, Out of the Past, which would really suit your tastes. 1945 Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise is one of the great films of all time. 1945 itself was a decent year for film. Some solid stuff: Mildred Pierce, Michael Curtiz The Lost Weekend, Billy Wilder I Know Where I'm Going!, Powell and Pressburger Spellbound, Hitchcock 1944 You can't go past Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity. Edward G. Robinson rules in this film, as does Barbara Stanwyck. Arsenic and Old Lace is a fun Capra film. Laura is another decent film noir. My BOY Preston Sturges was still pumping out films -- Hail the Conquering Hero and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek both in the same year. 1942 Dude, Casablanca. 1940 Most of the big name directors brought out a film this year. The Grapes of Wrath, John Ford Rebecca, Alfred Hitchcock The Philadelphia Story, George Cukor The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin His Girl Friday, Howard Hawks The Shop Around the Corner, Ernst Lubitsch His Girl Friday was my favourite. Fantasia is also worth a look. I personally want to check out The Letter (William Wyler) as it has Bette Davis being nasty. So, there's some suggestions. It's pretty limited to what I could be bothered looking up, and I probably missed a lot. To be honest, I don't pay a lot of attention to the year a film was released. Sites like www.allmovie.com have lists by year and country.

We already talked about this one on Smarkschoice. I recommend either Das Boot or Pixote.I saw about 20 minutes of Das Boot once. Trying to watch the badly-edited-for-American-TV version was a mistake. I should rent the Director's Cut. Not a good year. You could try Deer Hunter. I didn't mind it.Deer Hunter didn't do much for me. Annie Hall. Herzog had a great little film this year called Stroszek. The US has Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever. I keep running into the same problem - I've seen bits and pieces of things like Close Encounters, but I just never got around to watching it in full. Star Wars was...Ok, but not my type of film. You're spoilt for choice this year. Read some comments on Kaspar Hauser, seems like something I might enjoy. Now that I think about it I don't believe I've ever seen a Woody Allen film. Not a strong year. If you like Godard, you could check out Alphaville and Pierrot le Fou. Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More is fun. How does For a Few Dollars More compare to A Fistful of Dollars? Anyway, I love westerns and Clint Eastwood so I should probably get that. My favourite film from 1958 is Jacques Tati's Mon Oncle, which finally convinced me of Tati's rich genius, but safer choices are Touch Of Evil (Orson Welles) and Vertigo (Hitchcock). Check out The Hidden Fortress, too, since you like Kurosawa.Touch Of Evil and Vertigo both fit in the "seen bits and pieces" category. I went with Ozu's Early Summer, although it's not one of my favourite Ozu films. I'm surprised you haven't seen Rashomon yet. The Lavender Hill Mob is worth seeing for Alec Guinness. The Day the Earth Stood Still is pretty cool.I can't believe I forgot Rashomon. I've actually seen it three times, but it completely slipped my mind. You can't go past Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity. Edward G. Robinson rules in this film, as does Barbara Stanwyck.I'm kicking myself right about now. This was on TV about a month ago and I missed it. Arsenic and Old Lace is a fun Capra film. Laura is another decent film noir. My BOY Preston Sturges was still pumping out films -- Hail the Conquering Hero and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek both in the same year.Just like me with Woody Allen, I don't think I've ever seen a Preston Sturges film. Dude, Casablanca.Another for the "bits and pieces" file. Most of the big name directors brought out a film this year. Never saw any of these. So many things to watch, so little time. So, there's some suggestions. It's pretty limited to what I could be bothered looking up, and I probably missed a lot. To be honest, I don't pay a lot of attention to the year a film was released. Sites like www.allmovie.com have lists by year and country. I'm sort of obsessed with lists though. I'll probably be up all night reading that site now. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

July 22, 200520 yr comment_2946284 Leone's directing is much better in For A Few Dollars More; in fact the shot selection and editing probably makes it my favourite of the three. Leone's widescreen close-ups rule. The story isn't as massive as The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, but Clint is Badass, Van Cleef smooth & Gian Maria Volonte gives an awesome performance as the rudo, El Indio. When you see it, you'll agree that El Indio's watch is one of the greatest character touches ever. Ennio Morricone's score is incredible; you'll be whistling and hearing gunshots for days. (Not only that, but it's used brilliantly as part of the narrative.) If that's not enough, Klaus Kinski is one of El Indio's men. Kaspar Hauser is a strange, but beautiful film. Bruno S. gives one of the most sensitive performances I've ever seen. Really moving. If you want to try some Woody Allen, just watch Annie Hall.
July 22, 200520 yr comment_2946620 2005 - The Girl In The Cafe Was The Girl in the Cafe really THAT good? HBO has been playing the hell out of it ever since it was first shown and every time I try to watch it I just get bored by it which is odd since I love most love-themed movies. Perhaps I shall try to endure it once to see what I think of it. 1994 - Lion King/ Serial Mom/ Forrest Gump/Shawshank Redemption Oh God. I know that does not say Serial Mom. Don't tell me I found someone who loves that movie as much as I do.
July 22, 200520 yr Author comment_2947282 Was The Girl in the Cafe really THAT good?Well, I should admit, I haven't seen many films from this year. Anyway, I loved it.
July 22, 200520 yr comment_2947427 Oh God. I know that does not say Serial Mom. Don't tell me I found someone who loves that movie as much as I do. Dude, I love the movie. Matthew Lillard, Sam Waterson, and Kathleen Turner were great in their roles. Ricki Lake was passable. Just a great movie. Beverly Sutphin rules.

July 23, 200520 yr comment_2959729 I'm starting with the '70s, because I haven't watched enough pre-1970 movies to make a proper decision for each year. For example, since Citizen Kane is the only 1941 movie that I've seen, it would win by default. 2005 - Batman Begins 2004 - Collateral; Garden State; Spider-Man 2 2003 - X2: X-Men United 2002 - Spider-Man 2001 - Donnie Darko 2000 - Gladiator; Memento 1999 - American Beauty; Fight Club 1998 - American History X 1997 - Chasing Amy; Cop Land 1996 - 1995 - Casino; Heat; Mallrats; The Usual Suspects 1994 - Clerks; Leon: The Professional; Pulp Fiction; The Shawshank Redemption 1993 - Army of Darkness; Batman: Mask of the Phantasm; True Romance 1992 - Reservoir Dogs 1991 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1990 - GoodFellas 1989 - Best of the Best; Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1988 - Die Hard; Who Framed Roger Rabbit 1987 - Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn; The Untouchables 1986 - Aliens 1985 - Back to the Future 1984 - The Karate Kid; Ghostbusters 1983 - Return of the Jedi; Scarface 1982 - 1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark 1980 - The Empire Strikes Back; Raging Bull 1979 - Alien 1978 - Superman: The Movie 1977 - Star Wars 1976 - Taxi Driver 1975 - Jaws 1974 - The Godfather Part II 1973 - Mean Streets 1972 - The Godfather 1971 - 1970 -
