I haven't been able to find out much on this yet, but I'm very interested in seeing the movie. For those who don't know, it appears to be about the life of Johnny Cash, with Joaquin Phoenix playing Cash and Reese Witherspoon playing June Carter. I don't know anything really about Joaquin Phoenix, but Reese Witherspoon can do anything, and the story material is definitely there, so this should be excellent.

Phoenix as Cash?

That's sounds like a horrible trade off. Phoenix is too effeminate. Cash had balls like planets until the end. I just can't see how it will work realistically.

It's generally the casting decisions you expect the least in biopics that end up surprising you the most.

He does look alot like a young Johnny, so he has that going for him.

Supposedly June said she'd want Reese to play her.

Bumping since this just got released on Friday.

Unlike seemingly every white person on the 'net, I know next to nothing about Cash, except for a handful of his famous songs and that he had a guest spot on The Simpsons long ago. Still, I'm never one to pass up a good looking flick, so we caught it last night.

Although I'm not sure if it was worth the $17 for tickets (that's mostly just my cheapness talking), it was another great biopic film. Like I said, I know little about Cash, but from what I've seen and heard, Phoenix did a superb job as the Man in Black.

Witherspoon continues to amaze me, as she's one of the few pretty (female) faces in Hollywood with serious acting chops. Although it runs over two hours, the story's so engrossing that it hardly feels like a brisk 90 minutes.

As many of you know, I was a sucker for Ray earlier this year and while I don't know if Phoenix's portrayal was a dead on as Foxx's of Charles' was (then again, whose could be), the overall story was a bit more interesting. The supporting cast was clearly better, serving more of a purpose than the one in Ray, who while not bad, served more as people Foxx could talk to and show off his accurate take on Charles.

Just as I'm not familiar with too much from the Man in Black, I'm even less acquainted with Phoenix, except that he's River's brother. I caught him on Conan the other night and was impressed by how hard he worked to get down Cash as accurately as possible. It was another case of being able to buy an actor as the person he was portraying on screen.

Yeah, thats what everybodys calling it "The White Ray". Which is basically a compliment.

Good for Cash regardless, with all the pain and sorrow he had been speaking of, its nice to see others honor and look out for his legacy.
