Posting this here to cover other Youtube matches I find and watching going forward, so that if we can track down some new discs I'll no what I'm watched.

The Invader v. Bruiser Brody - 1986

Decent studio match considering who was involved. Brody's selling is ridiculous, but at least he gives Invader a fair amount of this and the atmosphere is good. This needed a real finish to be a nomination, but this was decent.

The Invader v. Bruiser Brody

This is from a stadium show, so I would be shocked if this wasn't available on a disc. This was also easily the best of these three matches. Brody's over the top selling and desperate avoidance of contact with the post and/or complete unwillingness to take a bump to the floor were annoying, but Invader was great in this. He got worked over early, made Brody's offense looked good, did his great slow developing comeback after the initial blood less and then went on a tear. I fucking loved his escalating levels of violence with Brody. He even shrugged off Brody's stuff the way Bruiser usually did to others. At one point he was holding him by the hair and just punching him in the face as he was laid out on the apron. He ends up cracking him with a chair and then chasing him into the dugout while smashing him with a chair. The post-match with the crowd carrying him around is kind of crazy hindsight, but it was an awesome moment in isolation.

Bruiser Brody v. Abdullah The Butcher

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuUJ6qUnU84

Typical match between these two with brawling, stabbing, chairshots, Abby shuffle/running and a non-finish. The second half of this is Brody running around chasing fans. There is probably a group of people who would like it, and I didn't actually hate it, but it doesn't belong on a set.

OK, I'll start with an offbeat choice. There's a Wendi Richter commercial tape that was released and is out there. I've swiped the listing from RudoReels.

Best of Wendi Richter in WWC

Description

Wendi Richter vs. Liz Chase (this is from NWF, including the link only for completeness)

Wendi Richter vs. Sasha

Wendi Richter vs. Peggy Lee Leather

Wendi Richter vs. Sasha (steel cage match)

Wendi Richter vs. Monster Ripper (steel cage match)

RudoReels has a best of Invader release listed that has the following listing:

Best of Invader I in WWC

Description

Invader 1 vs Eric Embry (already viwed, but this is the release that has the match)

Invader 1 vs Mr X

Invader 1 vs Bruiser Brody (not sure which one this is)

Invader 1 vs Tabu

Invader 1 vs Angel Micaro

Invader 1 vs Abdullah the Butcher

Invader 1 vs El viking ( ring in fire)

Invader 1 vs Rambo Ron Starr

Invader 1 vs Hans Mueller

The are four Invader vs. Brody matches, I'll put the four links here just in case:

Bruiser Brody vs. Invader #1 (from Vengeance in the Afternoon)

Bruiser Brody vs. Invader #1 (Very Low Audio)

Bruiser Brody vs. Invader #1 (in Trinidad)

Bruiser Brody vs. Invader #1 (1986)

Brody turns face at the end of 1986, so these two would have no other matches against each other after that.

There's also a Invader vs. Al Perez Streetfight, but it's likely from a DVD that was sold at Invader's gimmick table at some point:

And there's this Roddy Piper vs. Invader #1 from one of the commercial releases:

I watched all of this tonight. Lots of weak stuff and middling stuff. The Sasha cage match made sense psychologically but wasn't any good. Peggy Lee Leather through the worst punch I ever saw in that match. I did enjoy the mixed tag with Atlas and TNT as TNT worked hard and it had a fun clusterfuck feel to it that was enhanced with Ripper dressed like the Domino's noid. STill not worth the set though.

I watched all of this today except for the stuff I hadn't watched.

The Invader disc is a MUST pick up if it is gettable. The Ron Starr brawl has a good chance of making the set and the Embry match is a stone cold lock (Kris, Will, Phil, Devon, whoever, someone needs to watch that ASAP). Depending on the Brody match that is on it, it may be a nomination as well. The Abby match isn't good at all,but it's novel with Carlos Colon as ref and the screwjob finish with Abby attacking both guys with his "object." Could be an extra. The Fire Match El Viking is completely insane but super short. Basically they do the match in doors with shit insulation so the first two minutes or so are barely visible with black smoke pouring all over the place. The next thing you know there are three or four instances where it looks like either INvader or Viking's face is in the flames. Obviously a visual trick but very cool. The match ends up ending really quickly, but this was one of the first matches of it's kind and should be an extra. The rest of the stuff is decent but squashy.

I wrote up the Perez street fight as a nomination elsewhere.

Watched this stuff tonight, though a lot of it I've already seen and nominated. We badly need to find a way to get this disc. Virtually everything on it is something that could make the set as either an EXTRA or a match and I would argue that a couple of matches are must haves. Reviews and nominations are posted elsewhere in this forum except for the Chicky cage match which would be make a solid EXTRA, but falls short of a nomination because it's basically a squash

Making my way through some more of these...

"Sadistic" Steve Strong & Chicky Starr vs. Invader #1 & White Angel (1989)

JIP and only six minutes shown. What's here is basic, solid, wrestling. Chicky looked really good at moments. Still this was nothing that could make a set in this form.

"Sadistic" Steve Strong & Abdullah The Butcher vs. Invader #1 & Junkyard Dog (1989)

I hope we can find this on a disc. As a match this is JIP and we only have a couple of minutes. Surprisingly what is shown of this is actually very fun, to the point where I could see the complete version being a nomination. Even still the end of this really should be an EXTRA as it is the Abby face turn. Basically Chicky hits Abby with a weapon on accident, then gets mad at Abby for it and Abby knocks him down and stabs him multiple times drawing a ton of blood. Eventually Strong is able to knock Abby off of him with two running chairshots to the head from the floor. Really cool angle.

"Sadistic" Steve Strong & Kendo Nagasaki vs. Invader #1 & Junkyard Dog (1989)

This is as bad as it looked on paper. Amazingly Dog was actually the hardest worker in this match. Kendo clearly didn't want to do a god damned thing in this.

Miguel Pérez Jr. & Huracán Castillo Jr. vs. Super Black Ninja (Muta) & Tony Falk

Very fun t.v. sprint, but way too short to nominate. I have no clue why the hell Muta was stuck with Tony Falk as a partner here even for t.v. Anyhow Perez and Muta had a really good exchange early and the finish was neat.

Invader #1 vs. Kendo Nagasaki

This was bizarre. The first half of this was worked like a Jack Brisco v. Dory Funk Jr. match. Then all of the sudden Nagasaki ends up going to weapons shots. This briefly turns into a fun tit-for-tat brawl. And then it ends on a cradle. Strange.

"Sadistic" Steve Strong vs. Junkyard Dog (late Aug. or early Sept. 1989, aired Sept. 16 on TV)

This was way better than it should have been. Not that it was great, or even good really, but I thought Dog worked hard here. He was over of course, took some fun bumps and Strong seemed to be playing along. This doesn't belong on a set, but didn't feel like a waste of time to watch either.

TNT (Savio Vega) vs. Rip Rogers

I have already watched this. My question is - are we sure this is from 89? If so it's a nomination. Anyway here is what I wrote when I first saw it

Extremely fun tv title match. Rip Rogers really was a hell of a journeyman and is a case of a guy who seemed to mesh well against just about anyone. Here he goes into PR and works a match built largely around hiding the foreign object spots. It's not genius work, but I did think it was very clever that Rogers method was to hide the object in his knee pad and he had was very good about making it look like a legit adjustment when he pulled it out to use it. He was also really good about positioning the ref in ways that obscured what he was up to. TNT bled as he always does and took some really nice bumps, including a sick post show, a slow mo bump to the floor and a couple of big bumps over the barricade and into the first section of seating. When he makes his comeback he fucking cleans the clock of Rogers with a kick on the floor and Rip does a good job reacting to everything. Finish with the teased superplex and TNT rolling through on the splash off the top was pretty much perfect for what was essentially a studio match. Very enjoyable.

Iron Sheik vs. Huracán Castillo Jr.

This wasn't any good. Very short tv match, Castillo looked awful here.

TNT vs. Super Black Ninja (Muta)

Really disappointing match. For some reason these guys worked in damn near nothing of note. TNT tried a bit harder than Muta, but this felt like a match where both guys decided to coast early.

TNT vs. Buddy Landel (1988)

Already nominated

Sadistic" Steve Strong vs. Carlos Colón (1989)

Carlos Colón vs. Steve Strong - Cage Match (1989)

I have already watched both of these and I liked them both, but both feel too clipped up to nominate. I am curious if we can find out how much is missing from the first match. I also want to rewatch their barbed wire match as I didn't love it the first time around and I want to see if I would feel the same way.

Everything else form this particular post of links is something that MIGHT be 1990. I will eventually watch those, but would like to see if we can do some research to see what is what.

Invader #1 & TNT vs. Chicky Starr & Steve Strong

This was odd. Match is clipped in the middle, but probably eight or nine minutes are shown and it is entirely the heels getting their asses kicked with Chicky being beaten bloody, and even Strong getting no offense in. I feel like there is a bigger story to this but I don't know what the hell it was.

Hercules Ayala vs. Ox Baker (1985)

This was exactly as uninteresting as it looks.

Mighty Igor vs. Abdullah The Butcher

Seen this before, briefly skimmed it again just to show Devon how terrible Igor is.

T.N.T. vs. Jason The Terrible (1988)

This is the last two minutes of the match. What is shown is very good, with several fun spots. Jason ends up stealing the win off of Chicky distraction and I believe wins the title. Maybe an EXTRA if we had the disc.

Maelo Huertas vs. Chicky Starr (1988)

I love Huertas and desperately want to see him get a match on the set. This was fun with Chicky faking that his hair was pulled by falling on his ass and Huertas doing some fun stuff, including some great looking strikes. But this doesn't go terribly long and really ends before it starts. Too bad.

Invader #3 & Maelo Huertas vs TNT & Mr. Pogo

This was a ton of fun while it lasted, but it just wasn't long enough to nominate. I'm not even sure it was four minutes long, but in the span of that we got Invader doing some fun escapes, Huertas throwing some awesome strikes, taking a great kick from TNT and hitting a massive plancha off the top which was an amazing spot for this era. If this was even two or three minutes longer at this pace and speed I could see nominating it, but alas it wasn't. I'm still amazed that Huertas wasn't a bigger star for them

  • Author
comment_5574586

Halcón Rojo vs. TNT (1987)

Another Huertas match that is too short to nominate but fun. This one was especially annoying because they were pacing it like it was going to go long and then it ended in short order and turned into an angle with Invader making the save for Huertas who I think is his brother(?). Decent post-match angle that might be an EXTRA if it were on a disc.

Hercules Ayala vs. Jason The Terrible

This was decent, but JIP and short. Honestly better than I expected, but not essential viewing.

Invader #3 vs. Angel Mexicano

Mexicano did not look good here. The highlight of this was the insane splat senton from Invader.

TNT vs. Abuda Dean

This is basically just an angle with Dein trying to steal the match, getting busted by the White Angel who locks on a full nelson, which brings out the heels and leads to a brawl. Fun stuff, possibly an EXTRA if it were on disc.

Invader #1 vs. Sadistic Steve Strong

Really just the very end of a wild brawl. This is also includes some post-match promos.

Invader #2 vs. Iron Sheik

Sheik actually gives a lot in this, but it was short and not ll that interesting in the long run.

Invader #1 vs. Sasaki San (1989)

Not terribly interesting.

Carlos Colón vs. Hercules Hernández (1985)

Only five minutes are shown. Decent back and fourth brawl, but not high end stuff for Colon.

Invader vs. Jason El Terrible (Gillette cup 87)

I want to know how complete this is. I think around seven minutes or so are shown, but I could see this being a nomination if it's more than two thirds of the match. This is a big brawl, with some huge spots from both guys. Jason hits a great piledriver at one point and I loved Invader's diving elbow off the platform. I even dug the roll up finish. If we could find this more complete, or this is enough, I would probably end up backing it for the set.

T.N.T. vs. Chicky Starr (Aniversario 1989)

This is not quite five minutes and Starr is clearly working the clock again. He does everything to escape any and all engagement with TNT early in the match but ends up almost lucking into being in control. Lots of Chicky as a douche turned up to ten or eleven here which I loved. TNT ends up winning on a single thrust kick almost exactly at the five minute match and then shaves Chicky's hair post-match. I assume this was another match with the same gimmick as the Invader match two years earlier, though possibly with a five and not fifteen minute stip? Should be an EXTRA and if Boricua things it is historically significant possibly a nomination.

Huracán Castillo Jr. vs. Hercules Ayala (April 1987)

Total squash, but actually an entertaining one as Ayala does this crazy throw of Castillo into the corner and just beats the fuck out of him and finishes him off with the figure-four.

And with that I'm done with all of the posted matches other than the stuff that may be from 1990. I'll try and get on that soon.

Here are two TNT matches from 1988 just posted a week ago.

TNT vs Mr Pogo 2/27/1988 Copa Gillette

TNT vs Chicky Starr 1988

I have not had time to check how much is clipped out of them yet (if anything).

Watched both of these.

The first match is the best of the TNT v. Pogo matches we have in theory, but there is a clip in it. About 7:50 is shown of the match, I'm not sure how long it actually was. What is there is a lot of fun, almost sprinty spots, TNT in peril, and a build to some cool double knockdown spots before the finish itself which was mildly underwhelming but made sense at least.

The second match is really frustrating because I imagine if we had it in full it would be a match with a good shot at the set, but the edit makes it feel like we are missing a lot. Chicky is awesome in this match both offensively, doing surprising bridge up spots, and taking some great bumps. TNT goes nuts at the end and absolutely kills him with stiff kicks, chops and clotheslines. I wish this was complete.

While looking around the web to read the reactions to the announcement of Carlos Colon being inducted to the WWE hall of fame, I stumbled across the following post on the Kayfabe Memories board. Board member 80sWrestlingBuff apparently has acquired some PR footage from 1986 and is uploading some of the matches on Youtube.

Here is his post:

"I recently acquired of WWC from April of 1986 and took the time to upload some matches and angles on Youtube. I'll be posting more in the coming days/weeks, along with footage from International Wrestling in Montreal, Texas All-Star Wrestling, George Cannon's Superstars of Wrestling, Central States Wrestling from Kansas City, and other territories. Enjoy."
