Posted January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580875 Thought of this today when I saw that Elgin vs Richards from 2012 is a 5-star match. Haven't watched it, but I quite dislike Elgin and am not that fond of Richards either.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580877 I've seen both live, and cannot fathom how they'd get a 5-star match between them.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580880 The first Dragon Gate in ROH WM weekend match. A fine example of that style, but it seemed like Dave was just impressed by seeing it for the first time in years. And as someone who was a fan of Toryumon before eventually souring on it, the Toryumon/DG style wears thin because the matches run together easily. I would get a month or two of TV and then stop watching for a better part of a year until the inevitable turns/resetting of stables freshened up the matches, then repeat the cycle, with maybe some exceptions for notable singles matches. Having said that, while I've never seen Richards-Elgin, I'm sure it's much worse.
January 19, 201411 yr Author comment_5580886 I've seen both live, and cannot fathom how they'd get a 5-star match between them. This was my thought. I'm in Illinois, so I've seen both a few times for AAW.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580893 Was the Fantastics vs Sheepherders match from Crockett Cup '86 something that he at least saw live in full?
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580899 Misawa vs Kawada from the Super Power Series in '97 was given *****+ and I don't even think it was good, but lots of people like that match, so maybe I'm the odd one out.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580900 I actually had thoughts of posing a similar question when I saw Dave rated the 23/12 NJPW tag ****3/4 and did a spit take. Elgin/Davey is a good one. I'd also offer up the first Tana/Okada to get *****, from June 2012.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580908 I'd also offer up the first Tana/Okada to get *****, from June 2012. Meltzer didn't give that match *****.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580914 I'd also offer up the first Tana/Okada to get *****, from June 2012. Meltzer didn't give that match *****. Damn, brain mis-firing there. Actually I think I was confusing it with Tana-Minoru, that was from 2012. Looking at the list, TM-Dynamite is one I have an issue with.
January 19, 201411 yr comment_5580915 I was underwhelmed when I saw Joe/Kobashi, and very underwhelmed with Joe/Punk. Sounds like I don't like Joe, but I love Joe.

January 20, 201411 yr comment_5580972 From the ones I've seen Michael Elgin vs. Davey Richards is by far the worst match. That said Tanahashi/Okada from last October is probably the most boring.
January 20, 201411 yr comment_5581041 Dynamite vs Tiger Mask 4/21/83 (draw for the vacant WWF Jr. Title) Haven't seen that match in almost a decade and my tastes in wrestling have changed quite a bit. But I remember watching that match and having no clue how it got that rating.

But I remember watching that match and having no clue how it got that rating. That's the one with the stupid bullshit involving Dynamite breaking a bottle, right? Even by the overrated standards of their series that match easily stands out as the worst of the bunch.

January 20, 201411 yr comment_5581055 Of the ones I've seen, Flair/Windham from Crockett Cup '87 would be my choice. Total Flair-by-the-numbers type match where Flair doesn't seem like a threat and you can call all the spots ahead of time. Windham could have been anyone from Sam Houston to Butch Reed.
January 20, 201411 yr comment_5581065 Joe v Kobashi for me. I'm not a big puro fan at all. I know the name Kobashi from all the magazines and RF Video lists from the 90's and personally I found it really underwhelming if you aren't preconditioned to Kobashi worship leftover from the 90's. I actually liked Richards v Elgin a lot more than Joe v Kobashi on repeated viewings of both. I've re-watched Joe v Kobashi a bunch of times trying to like it and I sincerely think everyone who loves Kobashi (not that there's anything wrong with that) overrates it big time.
January 20, 201411 yr comment_5581066 Kobashi/Joe was good, but not great and it's not universally loved by those who've followed Japanese wrestling for years, it just universally loved by newer US indy wrestling fans who began following Japanese wrestling because of ROH and think it's the greatest match ever. Not having watched said Richards/Elgin match I can't say, but on paper it doesn't sound like the type of match I'd give I'd rate that highly.
January 20, 201411 yr comment_5581067 I had the exact opposite experience with Joe/Kobashi. I came in without any preconditioned love of Kobashi, puro, or even ROH or Joe for that matter, and I came away impressed that the match was able to live up to overwhelming hype. I totally bought the dream match feel they were going for, and I love the atmosphere. It's an example of a "good smark crowd" , to put it that way, one that adds to instead of distracts from a match,
