Posted August 4, 200520 yr comment_3082669 Troubled Baltimore Orioles fire manager Lee Mazzilli BY BILL MADDEN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER His team mired in an eight-game losing streak and dealing with the fallout from the Rafael Palmeiro steorid scandal, Baltimore manager Lee Mazzilli was fired today, the Daily News has learned. Mazzilli's firing comes two days after Palmeiro, one of his star players, was found to have failed Major League Baseball's steroid test and was suspended for 10 games. The team, which led the American League early in the season, has lost 16 of its last 18 games and has been playing poorly for nearly six weeks. The Orioles are currently in next-to-last place in the AL East, 10 games behind the Red Sox.
August 4, 200520 yr comment_3082781 Did Beatagan wake up this morning and think they were running an NBA franchise? Seriously, an eight game losing streak, in which everybody's trending back towards their expected levels of production, is not something to can the manager over. If the manager were forwarding said streak with repeated acts of incompetence, sure, but not in the case where one of the star players doped up on steroids. Mazzilli can't possibly be held accountable for that, can he?
