They're using the Superdome as an emergency shelter since they think it's the one place most likely to withstand an oncoming Category 5 hurricane.

Its crazy on CNN, it looks like in Independence Day when everyone's fleeing the cities. All the interstates are one way outbound and all the areas potentially affected were given a "get the fuck out" message where cops have the power either remove idiots who want to stay or have them sign waviers that would be used to help identify bodies afterwards.

Godspeed to Teke and anybody else who may be taking shelter in the area or trying to get out.

Jesus Christ. So much for my buddy Alex going to live there. Hope everyone in the area is either getting out or getting to a safe place.

^^^

My thoughts exactly. I know Teke doesn't live exactly in New Orleans (unless things have changed), but I do know where he's located is awfully close to it.

Hope he and everyone else there is okay through all this.

I'm ok.

I'm in Baton Rouge, which is where all the emergency personnel are parked, waiting for things to clear so they can go into New Orleans.

We're seeing wind and rain here but still have power for now. (We've only seen a few "blips" of power loss, which have come roughly every 20-30 minutes or so.)

This is why I don't understand why anyone would ever want to live in one of these areas. It's not like possibilities of hurricanes are unknown. I can't envision myself wanting to move to an area where dealing with hurricanes every year would be in the cards. Who wants to rebuild their fucking house every 12 months?

Yeah, I guess part of the Superdome roof was ripped off.

I echo the above setiments...my thoughts are with those in danger.

comment_3292922

The Superdome roof apparently is just fabric over the metal framework, so the fabric got ripped up but the structure is intact.

Yeah, it's like one of those old-school type domes that looks like an inflated balloon on top of a round structure. Other domes such as the Metrodome in Minnesota and BC Place in British Columbia are like that, albeit with different material.

It'd be worse if it was like the SkyDome in Toronto, where damage to the roof could hurt the structure itself.

Good to see you're alright, Teke.

My thoughts to those in the LA area that has to deal with this right now.

Maybe I'm just naive, but LA being open to hurricanes never occurred to me.

Id wager a declaration the average person agrees, Fly.

Hurricanes can may be more common in some areas but can travel all across the US. Nobody is really safe from Natural Disasters. If a Typhoon doesnt get you than an earthquake will.

I hate the city with a passion, and if any city in the world had to disappear, I'd want it to be New Orleans, but I also have many friends that I love dearly that live in the area and have family in the area, and I'm hopeful that they're able to retrieve their belongings when this is all done, but more importantly, that they don't lose any loved ones. I talked to four people there today and they've all retreated to Houston for the time being, but their possessions are certainly in jeopardy, which is sad.

I'm seriously hoping my drive through Tupelo, Birmingham and Atlanta this Saturday isn't in jeopardy.

I'm not even sure how badly I'd want to live there (generally because I can't picture me leaving where I am right now anytime soon) but it is a place I definitely want to visit. So much history in that city, as well as all the attractions. And Mardi Gras. :) And the Superdome. God knows I want to see at least one football game there in the future.

Overpriced hellhole that you can't walk in at all by yourself. Floating caskets on the street. Unbelievably high rate of theft and assault. Humidity even worse than Arkansas humidity. Cajun food disgusts me. Just not for me at all.

Save for the humidity and ever-present threat of getting mugged, I think some of the aspects you mentioned are the very things that people romanticize whenever they think about living in New Orleans. As you mentioned before, it's just personal preference.

*coughLong before the SuperDome,

Where the Saints of football play,

Lived a city that the damned called home,

Hear their hellish roundelay...

New Orleeeans...

Home of pirates, drunks, and whores!

New Orleeeans...

Tacky, overpriced, souvenir stores!

If you want to go to Hell, you should make that trip

to the Sodom and Gomorrah on the Mississipp'!

New Orleeeans...

Stinking, rotten, vomiting, vile!

New Orleaaans...

Putrid, brackish, maggoty, foul!

New Orleeeans...

Crummy, lousy, rancid, and rank!

New Orleeeans!cough*

Back online...

Goddamn power went out at 12 noon yesterday and just came back online.

Worst damage appears to be in St. Bernard and the parishes south of New Orleans, as they're under 20 feet of water and people were either stuck in attics or on the roofs of houses.

Then again, my info is nearly 24 hours out of date by now.
