Did you guys see on Fox News, Shepard Smith and Geraldo Rivera going fucking nuts about the fact that they've locked people in the convention center and the Superdome? They have no idea why they aren't letting people just fucking walk across the freeway and just get the hell out but they aren't allowing it.

Geraldo was describing what it was like in the convention center and he was just breaking down losing it, holding a 10 month old baby.

They aren't letting the people out and no one knows why.

Just watch that. Fucking INSANE what's going on there.

I finally got through and it was fucking disturbing.

Not as disturbing as hearing about a ten year old girl being raped in the convention center who had her ankles broken so she couldn't run away.

Read that last sentence and wonder why those of us on the sideline who are donating and have given food and clothes and whatever else we can are frustrated and mad and want to place blame on someone. Tell me it isn't relavent at this time and place when people are being brutalized because of govt. inaction.

The media really does do so much harm in a situation like this because the victims who are still stranded without food, water and shelter get interviewed by these correspondents, who go on to tell us how there people will die without help. And within an hour or the two, the news reporter leaves on his helicopter and the victims are still left waiting around, wondering if help will ever come for them. Some world we live in.

Is any of your cities' taking in evacuees?  Mine is.

Flyboy, look at who you're talking to...

My city (Baton Rouge) and the surrounding area has literally doubled in population overnight due to people who got out beforehand, refugees from the aftermath, and various emergency workers here to help out.

Several communities here have opened their homes to evacuees, but since we're kinda far away I don't know how many are going to be taken up on the offer.

On a related note, Bruno Sammartino was working the phones for the Pittsburgh portion of the Jerry Lewis telethon (who's raising money for hurricane victims too this year). I thought that was pretty cool, and it was good to see that Bruno's still in pretty awesome shape for a dude pushing 70.

At least Sean Penn can still make us laugh:

Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks

From correspondents in New Orleans

05sep05

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

I really hate to say this and I feel for all the people who are sufferin and who have lost their lives in the wake of this unfortunate accident, but the administration's piss poor reaction to try help people, instead choosing to blame everyone but themselves despite the fact they are the people that push the buttons and all below are yes men and beggars, is fucking appalling and a sad indictment of how inept the current government is. People are fucking drowning and billions of dollars of damage have been incurred and the man in charge is fucking strumming a guitar and acting as if he had no clue this could happen. Then you have assholes declaring the place bulldozer territory while people continue to struggle and crime is rampant... fuck, man. It's like they could care less as long as they still have their vacation homes.

An opinion from Molten Thought on the aid efforts:

As a former Air Force logistics officer, let me clarify the following for the idiots in the Left Wing Media:

1. Things can get destroyed far more swiftly than they can get fixed.

2. The United States military can wipe out the Taliban and the Iraqi Republican Guard far more swiftly than they can bring 3 million Swanson dinners to an underwater city through an area the size of Great Britain which has no power, no working ports or airports, and a devastated and impassable road network.

3. You cannot speed recovery and relief efforts up by prepositioning assets since the assets are endangered by the very storm which destroyed the region.

4. We do not yet have teleporter nor replicator technology like you saw on "Star Trek" in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grownups actually engaged in the recovery effort today were studying engineering.

5. Getting people out of the stricken areas is the most pressing concern, since we cannot get enough supplies into it to safely sustain them.

6. Getting the airport, bridges, and roads repaired is the next priority, since the supplies and people needed to fix levees, drain the city, and repair the infrastructure cannot be transported via aircraft. You need to truck them in.

7. Once the infrastructure is repaired, it is vital to get the ports in working order. Equipment and supplies can only be moved into the area in large quantities by sea.

8. Only then can recovery efforts begin in earnest.

9. The above will take weeks and months, not days or hours.

10. No amount of yelling, crying, and mustering of moral indignation will change any

of the facts above. Facts are facts. Opinion is cheap.

11. You could do more help actually keeping your damned satellite trucks out of the way of the folks doing the real work.

12. If you must vent your indignation, how about targeting the Louisiana officials who did absolutely nothing to protect their constituents? At least you can help ensure the populace doesn't elect these clowns again.

Yet more cheap-shots against the left. Honestly, I really don't give a fuck anymore. Does everything in this country have to be a dick-measuring contest between the far left and far right? Quite honestly, anyone who thinks their liberalism or conservatism is 100% right is full of shit. And somehow, these fucktards dominate political discussion, and people who think there is truth in both sides of the argument are drowned out, because if they show the slightest hint of intelligent thought, they are drowned out. It seems like every news channel has to have some Bill O'Reilly clone nowadays, and none of them add anything to the discussion.

Fuck politics.

comment_3360381

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a loud moderate opinion on this.

This issue really seems to be the great divider among partisan politics, and both sides have so much ammo and hostility built up over the last four years that it's become ugly.

The whole "now is not the time to point fingers" attitude of the right seems to only have lasted long enough to figure out how to blame the local government and/or the victims themselves.

Sure, you can say that things could have been done better before in terms of preparedness, but it's getting pretty disgusting the level of "blame the victim" going on now. No one blamed the local government on 9/11. No one said "well there was a terror attack there before, so why didn't the people who died in the towers get a different job?". No one blamed the mayor for not evacuating the second tower after the first one collapsed.

Bottom line, CNN was on the scene before the fucking federal government. There's no excuse for that. The whole system failed from top to bottom, not from top to somewhere in the middle like the right wants everyone to believe. What's sad half the country will believe the entire thing was the mayor of NO's fault because FOX News and 95% of talk radio will tell them so. The stacks of evidence showing failure on all levels will get ignored as bias from some bullshit liberal media, despite the fact the media has protected these clowns since day one.

Know why CNN was on hand first?

They fucking PARKED THEIR REPORTERS AND TRUCKS in New Orleans BEFORE THE STORM.

I'm not trying to be all Lefty Leftist here, but I just find the idea of a man who is meant to look out for the interests of his nation jamming with a country singer while an entire city is completely fucked in every way absolutely mindblowing. The fact one person has already wrote the entire place off and chose to do so publicly, I find that pretty insensitive. "What, your entire life and home is ruined? That's a shame, let's make it a landfill." WTF is that? This guy is meant to be a public representative?

comment_3364207

Right. Why couldn't the government park the National Guard and/or miltary trucks in the area before the storm? Why couldn't have there have been any advance preparation?

Oh yeah, no one could have predicted that a storm would flood a low-lying area.

Yeah putting your rescue equipment at risk to get destroyed by the hurricane is such a great idea.
