Nothing new added to Old School yet, that Houston show is from the original uploading of house shows when the service started.

Are the Stampede episodes posted so far stuff that aired on Classics on Demand, or is there footage that is completely new to the world since its original 1970s airing?

 

I had seen the first two episodes before. I'm not sure about the third, but I had never seen it myself.

The GWF/USWA issue bothers me too.

 

I encountered a bug on Roku. If you add a series (for example, GWF, Midsouth, etc.) to your Watchlist, it only adds one year, even if there are shows for multiple years.

Bix made this note on twitter and it's something i've also said (and agree 100%): Yes, it'd be nice if they put these up in order, but it's really understandable why hand-picked episodes would center around WWE superstars before their run.

 

Hopefully this is a tipping point where they see a boost in viewership and go heavier then.

 

I can't get over these GWF Best of Comps from 92 - so random.

 

It's like reading page 217 of a book and then page 232 and then page 271. Maybe it's a fun page or hey, the page has a really nice turn of phrase or a character you recognize from page 1081 of the next book which you're familiar with already. But it's still not a very satisfying experience.

 

My main takeaways for the excitement for people that a lot of this is new to is mainly "You know all of 1984 Mid-South is on youtube now, right?"

 

I get the argument. I just think that the hundred of us are a drop in the bucket and it doesn't really matter one way or another what we do.

The Stampede stuff is strange because when Classics on Demand would show it it was always listed as "February 1978" for example. Never saw more than two shows a month. So good to see that they have multiple stuff from a month on there.

Liking the new content uploads! I never knew Shawn Michaels was the face of the AWA though, what with his face being on the majority of the pins

I was aware that "AWA Championship Wrestling" was the ESPN Program and "AWA All-Star Wrestling" was their syndicated show, but where does "AWA Superstars" fit? Was it a show for secondary syndicated markets, or something for Canadian TV perhaps?

 

 

 

You know, Larry Nelson talked about what I think was this show in his book, and I remember thinking to myself at the time "I don't remember ever seeing that show", especially with how randomly weird it seemed to be in terms of presentation with Larry.

 

My guess is it was something syndicated in small doses, perhaps in the Minneapolis area so the "home" Base had some sort of different or local content, but that show, besides what Larry talked about in his book, is unfamiliar to me.Talked to one other big AWA guy that I know and he's never seen it either.

 

Would love to see a match/segment list if anyone wants to break it down when they watch it.

I lived in eastern Iowa in the '80s and we received AWA Superstars through a local station. I remember watching some of these episodes back then.

IIRC Nelson's book, he specifically said he goofed off with weird stuff on that show. I thought the name was an error on the network until these posts jogged my memory.

Yeah at first sight I thought he was drunk, and he may have been, but the show is goofy as fuck by design. Did Verne just not give a shit? Or was he even paying attention?

 

Rockers vs Orton and Adonis was a pretty good match. Rockers would were pretty good even if timing was off at times. Orton was tremendous and Adonis looked like absolute shit physically (his face looked rough) but bumped like a mofo. Orton was especially on fire at the end with the punches and elbows.

What territories are left for them to draw from now? Just Florida and ECW?

Well ECW is already up and has been since the Network's inception. They definitely have Florida, because they aired some of that on the old On Demand service. You have to think they have Central States since that was bought out by Crockett (although what there is worth airing is beyond me). I'm not sure, but don't they own Georgia Championship Wrestling as well? Getting up a bunch of old Mid-Atlantic shows from before the WCW debut would be nice too, since they teased us with a few back in the old days.

Didn't they do some Canadian survey with a bunch of options back when it looked like they might have to put up a lot of content to meet cultural law requirements?

Began watching the next AWA Superstars episode. There's definitely a sense of "Verne left for the evening and we are unsupervised" feel to the wraparounds, as the next episode begins with Larry Nelson sitting on the floor with a woman named Kathleen (another Gagne daughter?) who is covering his face with Shamrock stickers because it's St. Patrick's Day.

"Little" Larry Nelson. I need every episode of AWA Superstars. The series of clips in the beginning with Larry in a clown wig sealed the deal.

What's really amazing is Adonis was the same weight he was when he left the WWF here in February 1988 and in the last matches he had in Japan in June he was doing the pre Adorable leather jacket gimmick looking nearly 100 pounds lighter.

Also I think the Georgia Championship stuff must not be in good shape since I recall some DVD releases had GCW clips taken from YouTube.

Yeah--every time I can recall any GCW being used by WWE, it looks VHS terrible, like they don't have real masters to work from. I would expect some Mid Atlantic as part of all this, though, as they've readily used it in the past and it's full of future legends if that's the angle they're going with.

So I'm watching the USWA, and it brings me to a question I've meant to ask the historians/knowledgable folk here at PWO for some time. It would probably be better suited to the old "comments that don't warrant a thread" thread, but alas that is gone, so I will ask here.

 

My Texas/Memphis exposure was limited to what I saw on ESPN as a child and read in Apter magazines, and while I have caught some stuff as an adult it was mostly the early Texas years, leaving me to ask this question....

 

Why the fuck was Eric Embry so over, and pushed as a top guy?

Eric was one of those "you had to be there" guys where there really was no reason he should have been over but he was. I do recall he was good at being the guy who takes a beating and never gives up, so there was that.

He was a good promo and sold himself as a man of the people who would fight for them and maybe he'd get his ass kicked but if he had the crowd behind him he'd still win. It worked. He was pushed as a top guy because he got over and he drew.

Am I correct in remembering there was an angle where someone (maybe The Moondogs) tossed battery acid into his eyes and blinded him? I swear I remember that from an old PWI.

Wasn't Embry also the booker?
