October 4, 200520 yr comment_3586776 So when was the Internet actually created? 1970s? 1980s? If it was a small-scale thing in 1990 as Teke mentioned, when did that form of Internet start? I've had people try to explain this to me before, but they usually say it in long whirlwind-style summaries that makes the NWA World title lineage look simple by comparison. So, without any detailed explanation, what time frame?
October 4, 200520 yr comment_3586850 I was downloading pics off newsgroups via Prodigy on a 14.4k modem back in 96-97ish.

October 4, 200520 yr comment_3591237 Wasnt UCLA and Stanford the 1st universities to use the internet?
October 4, 200519 yr comment_3593173 The initial framework of the Internet such as ARPANET go back to the 1960s and 1970. World Wide Web goes back to around the early 90s. Commercial internet MAY go all the way back to CompuServe and GEnie in the early 80s (I think they used true e-mail addresses that allowed e-mail to go outside of the CompuServe and GEnie servers) but it didn't become big until around 1993-1994 when AOL and other services really started to expand.
