October 23, 201410 yr Author comment_5635026 I guess this was the last classic WCW angle. Bret gets a hero's welcome in the best thing he's been involved in since 1997, showing how much he still had to give. The premise is that Bret said he could beat Goldberg in five minutes. He recites "Oh Canada" and the crowd absolutely loves him. He mentions Goldberg putting money to face Steve Austin, but Bret beat Steve Austin every time he fought him. He then takes off the Calgary Hitmen jersey to show a Maple Leafs jersey and the crowd absolutely erupts. Goldberg comes out and this should have been the one time WCW didn't play the taped chants since it was obvious fans weren't doing it. He spears Bret and then gets knocked unconscious. Bret is out for a second too. Bret revives first, covers Goldberg and counts to three! Then he takes off the jersey to reveal that he was wearing a steel plate, gets on the mic and says "I quit!" So awesome, but they had no idea how to follow up on this.
December 21, 201410 yr comment_5646317 Bret was so great here. He's still the ultimate mega-face in Canada and he panders wonderfully. His line about Goldberg putting up money to fight Austin when he's beaten Austin every time he faced him was awesome. It's insane how little WCW did with Bret considering the potential and the fact that his going was such a huge deal.
February 12, 201510 yr comment_5654006 Bret brings up the "I came to WCW to earn a legacy not ruin it" line again. Yeah this was the best thing Bret did in WCW. Good promo and angle.
March 16, 201510 yr comment_5658896 Probably the best thing bret ever did in WCW. A great angle that should have led to a money match. I remember marking out huge when the steel plate was revealed and I was a huge Goldberg fan still.
August 16, 201510 yr comment_5692140 Here's a main event feud that people wanted to see. The steel plate was such an inspired idea. It was great how Bret sold the spear when most others in his place wouldn't have done. A strong hometown hero promo from the Hitman as well. All of Canada was his hometown.
May 10, 20178 yr comment_5799906 This is instantly the most compelling program in WCW all year, so naturally it's practically forgotten about in 7 days. As it is, this *might* have been enough to salvage Bret since he has a compelling reason to go after almost any top guy on the roster, but both politics (predictably) and real life (in a way that no one could imagine) would intervene.
