I'm going to say no, but not vehemently. In fact, Calhoun was so prolific at that bump (I'm guessing Haystacks has more countout losses than anyone in the history of wrestling, and definitely the highest countout-to-pinfall ratio) that I wouldn't be surprised if he knew a technique for yanking the ropes out with him.

Gotcha. Sorry shoe, I didn't listen to that show so I misunderstood the question. I'd say it was probably gimmicked but I'd also not be surprised if this had happened to him before.

If you use jdownloader2 you can paste the channel's address and it will pick up all the videos for you so you don't have to convert them one by one. In fact I am currently creating a copy for myself and all 101 videos in the highest quality is only 15GB. I learned my lesson after the jellybeans collection of L.A. wrestling disappeared probably to never be seen again.

Davis casually refers to Bearcat Wright as a "young negro boy".

yeah, well.. It wouldn't stun me if Davis was using the Mexican stereotype voice every time that a Hispanic wrestler was working there. But yeah, it was the 50s/60s.

So I won't hold that to the same standard as Russ Davis consistently "trying" to talk to the wrestlers in his commentary, which could get a bit annoying since he had a way of overdoing it a bit.

I don't think this would have been considered racist in that time frame:

Of course, drawing attention to his race probably isn't necessary, but it seems churlish to me to use this as a knock on Davis.

I wasn't knocking him for it. It definitely threw me though.

Calling him "boy" over & over was more of a shock to my 2014 system than the "negro" part.

So I was going to donate to the Chicago Film Archive myself because this is really tremendous stuff, but then I saw the "adopt a collection". I was wondering if there was interest on here to pool our money and adopt this collection. I don't know if this something being discussed on Wrestling Classics or other boards. Anyone who is interested let me know. I can't watch to all the Thesz/Rogers/Gagne stuff. Is there a Gagne/Roger match?

From my understanding, it is a donation towards the preservation of that specific collection (i.e. the Wrestling comes from the Sylvia & Russ Davis Collection). The link is here http://www.chicagofilmarchives.org/donate/adopt-a-collection and I am sure there is a number or email to inquire what our money would go towards.

Series II comprises one folder of materials containing magazines with articles on the Davises, clippings of newspaper articles on the Davises, business documents for IWF including a contract with a TV station renting their wrestling show, and seven photos promoting their 1951-52 daily talk show on WGN and behind the scenes at IWF.

Some of the other stuff in the Davis collection sounds pretty interesting.

I grabbed a bunch of 50s wrestling from LA off youtube a couple of years ago, unless you meant something else.

I meant something else, but I'm curious about the footage that you got.

The footage I am talking about is a big collection of early 80s L.A. wrestling probably from the Spanish channel (the commentator would alternate in between English and Spanish commentary during the same match) and also some local lucha libre program. Apparently the uploader (jellybeans with some number at the end) got tired of people asking him if he wanted to trade DVD's that he deleted the channel and vanished. This was during a time that I wasn't watching wrestling (I heard about the channel from a friend who told me) and I remember kicking myself for not downloading or even watching a long Perro Aguayo vs Mil Mascaras match from that era. There was also a Negro Navarro vs Mando Guerrero match that sounded interesting, and Chris Adams vs one of the misioneros (Navarro again I think).

I hate those misses. They happen a lot less now because we're more aware stuff can go away at any time now, but everyone that grabs stuff probably has a head-slapping moment when something disappeared on them at some point before they got it.

I've finally got a chance to see my dad's favorite wrestler when he was a kid thanks to these videos. His favorite was Farmer Don Marlin. Seemed pretty athletic overall.

I think Davis is pretty hilarious as an announcer. I wouldn't call him good though. Describing him as an old cartoon narrator is spot on.

Russ Davis seemingly refers to everyone as "boy" at some point. The japanese, the greek, the local Polack, etc.

In some ways, this is like watching Punch Out! The stereotypes are cartoonish and turned up to 11.
