November 5, 201410 yr Author comment_5638143 This was a fantastic debut, but WCW had no ideas for how to do anything with the character after creating it. Mentioning Bagwell firmly establishes him as a midcarder right out of the gate.
June 9, 201510 yr comment_5674102 I don't know if it was the video or what but the bright lighting was just awful. Gene acting like Berylyn was never in WCW when they said he was Alex Wright was silly. Agree about the Buff angle though.
September 22, 201510 yr comment_5699818 Whatever effect they were going for with the lighting was not working. WCW production compared to the WWF was so amateurish. Berlyn did have an awesome new look. Was that Karl Lagerfeld accompanying him? The translator thing worked well as a one off. That kind of thing would soon grate if overdone. He challenges Buffy, who I guess is still somewhere in the bookers minds.
January 21, 20169 yr comment_5722282 I thought this was terrible. The interrupter seemed confused at points and him calling out Buff doesn't exactly set his ambitions too high.
November 2, 20168 yr comment_5774124 What is the real story about the match at Fall Brawl between the two (that didnt happen)? The story I heard way back then was that Bagwell, furious that he was asked to put someone over, hid in his truck and pouted all night. They sent Duggan in, who refused to sell and Berlyn was doomed from there.
October 16, 20177 yr comment_5816899 I love Berlyn's look and--lighting aside--the presentation, with his entire entourage, and his gimmick of knowing how to speak English but refusing. I also cracked up at Mean Gene getting a patdown (Bobby: "They should have done this years ago!" Tony: "This has never happened to Okerlund...in the ring"). I like the idea of the translator but she doesn't really do as good of a job as Lana of coming off as foreign. It's easy heat, but it's effective on this night. Still, Buff Bagwell is an underwhelming first choice of a feud considering the amount of effort they put into this. I didn't remember the ridiculous lighting but it's as bad on the Network as it is on the Yearbook, so it was some sort of conscious choice.
