Posted October 20, 201410 yr comment_5634530 This starts with a promo by Funk about Flair talking about spitting on dirt and how can he be proud of how he acted at the Bash. Extra material. Steamer then cuts a promo on Luger next and he was as heated here as I've ever seen him. Scott Steiner is with Ross next talking about Rick being happy with his new girlfriend Robin Green and how they want the tag titles. "Dog Faced Gremlin" Rick Steiner vs. Iron Sheik (7/16/89) Sheiky attacks Steiner before the bell but Rick would answer back with a big Steinerline. Sheiky then got down on his knees with Rick and went at it with him before being bitten. Sheiky got on offense but Steiner would break free and even tried a Camel Clutch doing Sheiky's mannerisms which was funny. Steiner would eventually get the pin on an inside cradle out of a suplex. Then we get a promo from Flair after his match at the Bash still with blood and mist on his face. Great visual and extra material. Tommy "Wildfire" Rich vs. Iron Sheik (7/19/89) Center Stage goes nuts for Wildfire here chanting USA as Sheiky stalls on the floor. After some decent back and forth action we get the same exact finish from the last match as Sheiky went to suplex Rich but Rich countered with an inside cradle. Rich then ventured into the Center Stage crowd in celebration. "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert & "Capt. Redneck" Dick Murdoch vs. Wild Bill Irwin & Norman the Lunatic (7/18/89) Now this is a matchup. I loved how Murdoch was introduced as a hometown legend and MVP of the 1976 West Texas Alumni Football game.....Murdoch gets on the mic before the match and says that this is Amarillo's night and he is calling out a friend to counter Teddy Long saying that he would knock the nappy hair off of Teddy's head. Murdoch then brings out former 49ers player/UWF Commissioner John Ayers who actually did play for West Texas State to be at ringside. Ayers wearing cutoff jean shorts is hilarious. Murdoch is definitely motivated here as he is wearing some special cowboy boots and breaks out some flying headscissors on Irwin as well as three dropkicks in a row on both heels which the fans loved. Gilbert comes in and immediately the heels get the advantage with Gilbert doing a nice job playing FIP before making the hot tag to Murdoch who runs wild on the heels before putting Irwin out with the brainbuster. This is a great Murdoch performance but the match itself isn't a nomination. Next we get the WNN with Gordon Solie where he announces that Steamer has left the NWA because of a foot injury (false) then gives more news on WWF talking about Arn & Tully winning the WWF Tag Titles and Eric Embry's war with PY Chu-Hi in World Class. Then we get Funk's Grill with Norman & Teddy Long and the Funk/Norman dynamic was always great.....Funk managing Norman was a lost great angle. Sting & "Dr. Death" Steve Williams vs. Terry Funk & Terry "Bamm Bamm" Gordy (7/31/89) It's only natural to have Doc face off with Gordy in New Orleans. The comedy early in this match is something and not from the wrestlers but this one drunk dude who went to Gordy & Funk lifting up his shirt and slapping his belly then turning his ass around and spanking it while the heels just looked at him. The New Orleans fans then started a "FUNK AIN'T SHIT" chant and he drops down to get in their faces and this is wild...it seemed like in this era of the NWA the fans that were attending shows were kinda unstable. Doc & Gordy would get in together and the hoss battle was on and popping as he hits some big spears on both heels. Funk then throws Doc over the railing getting out there with the wild fans which wasn't the smartest move but he survived. Funk would roll Doc back in the ring and the heels got a spike piledriver but only for a nearfall as Sting threw Funk on the railing on the floor. Gordy would then hit Doc with a big clothesline for another nearfall and the heels just kept pounding on Doc with Funk setting him up for the spinning toehold but Doc got an inside cradle. Sting would get the hot tag and he got his own piledriver on Funk who sold it like death but Sting would crotch himself trying to hit Funk on the ropes and Funk would start working over Sting's left leg. Funk would then trip over the ring mat and threw a chair in the crowd before him & Gordy doubled up on Sting. Doc & Funk would then tee off on each other as Gordy battered Sting in the ring. This would break down into a 4-way brawl although it had been that way all match and Gary Hart would get involved this time as Tommy Young called for the bell. Sting choked Hart as Funk got the branding iron which he nailed him in the back of the head with. Doc then tried to kill the heels according to Ross with the iron as Garvin & Hayes showed up to get the heels out of there. This was just a wild and crazy spectacle and I want to nominate this just because of the madness. I think this should be on the set. Teddy Long then cuts a promo about his Skyscrapers. The Skyscrapers (Dangerous Danny Spivey & Sid Vicious) vs. Avalanche & Mike Blackwell (7/18/89) Total squash. Luger is out next with Ross talking about his upcoming match with Rick Steiner and how he is the best US champ ever. Next we get the Danger Zone with Michael Hayes talking about the War Games at The Omni on 8/6. Funk & Hart are out next for a promo on his match with Flair at The Omni on 8/6 with Funk wearing a tuxedo saying that he can beat Flair by himself and doesn't need Muta. Then we get clips of Gilbert & Sting vs. New Zealand Militia this ended up with J-Tex running out and attacking the faces until Flair made the save. Center Stage fucking exploded when Flair ran out as people were running down from their seats jumping and yelling. Then we get a group promo with them and Flair & Gilbert burying the hatchet as well as Flair dancing around in Funk's cowboy boots. Extra material. The Midnight Express ("Beautiful" Bobby Eaton & "Sweet" Stan Lane) vs. The New Zealand Militia (Rip Morgan & Jacko Victory) (7/31/89) Corny & Eaton in New Orleans like the old days. This had some pretty good back and forth action with both teams getting shine on offense. Lane did a good job playing FIP taking solid punishment before getting the hot tag to Eaton who ran wild before the 4-way brawl started up going to the floor where Jacko would backdrop Eaton back into the ring to beat the count which was a cool but cheap finish. Good match but not enough for a nomination. Next we get a promo from The Freebirds about their issues with the Steiners with Hayes saying that Gordy has gone home. NWA World Tag Titles: The Fabulous Freebirds (Jimmy "Jam" Garvin & Michael "PS" Hayes) © vs. The Dynamic Dudes (Johnny Ace & Shane Douglas) (7/31/89) The New Orleans fans chant that the Freebirds are homos which is nice. The Birds dominate the early part of this match beating on Shane before making the hot tag to Johnny who takes it to both Birds before Shane would join him until a Hayes DDT on Ace would end the match. I think we missed the Dudes getting the early part of the match because this was too one sided and short. Luger is out next for a promo with Jim Ross about Tommy Rich who is the new top contender for his US Title saying that Rich was dug up from his dirt farm to come back. Jim Ross talks about how Johnny Ace suffered a broken cheekbone in a match against the Militia and we get cilps of the match from 8/1/89. Then we get clips from Norman vs. Brian Pillman on 8/1/89 where Norman tries to injure Brian after Brian pinned him. Pillman then cuts a promo with Ross afterwards. Next we get The Danger Zone with Mike Rotundo and Paul E. is hilarious kissing Mike's ass. Paul E. then is with Ross talking about the war between the SST & Roadies. Good stuff. Sting is out next with Ross talking about wanting to get his NWA World TV Title back. Mike Rotundo vs. "Dr. Death" Steve Williams (8/8/89) Doc comes out wearing amateur style headgear here as this is supposed to be a part of the Rotundo scientific challenge but Rotundo already broke the rules in their 1st match. This started out slow but it would pick up with Rotundo throwing Doc into the railing on the floor where it looked like he hurt himself legit on his wrist. Rotundo would then work over Doc who made a comeback setting up the Oklahoma Stampede where he would hit Tommy Young by mistake then threw Rotundo over the top rope while trying to save himself before Tommy Young would run over to Mike to raise his hand calling for the DQ. Rotundo would then post Doc then took his headgear off and beat him with it. Good for what it was. Sting vs. Ron Simmons (8/14/89) It's the battle of the future WCW champs again and these two put on a pretty damn good little match here as both men were improving especially Sting who was starting to come into his own at this time. Simmons was really good at using his power offense to keep Sting on defense and Sting did a good job of selling everything plus the finish was cute as Sting got a schoolboy on Simmons after he brought him back in the ring from the floor. I'm going to push this forward as a low-end nomination. Next we get the WNN with Solie talking about the upcoming Clash as well as news from Stampede & Japan.
