So I was thinking about The Undertaker/Kane feud from 2010. I absolutely LOVED that feud. I thought Kane did a very good job carrying the feud with his promos (even when they tried to sabotage him by playing music during all of them) and The Undertaker having his powers "stolen" only to be revived by Paul Bearer and the urn was just a great story. Unfortunately, the matches kind of stunk.

 

So I was wondering if there are any other feuds that people remember as being great from a storyline/angles/promo standpoint that just didn't deliver when it came time to get in the ring?

This is accurate. I bought a Butch Reed comp and a Jake Roberts comp after watching the Mid-South set. One of them is my favorite wrestler compilation that I have. The other is the only comp I ever regret having bought.

Huge Bret fan but I have to go Bret/Shawn on this one. Some of the matches were good but the legend of the feud destroys the sub par matches it produced.

Andre and Hogan's mid-80's feud. Given Andre's physical condition, however, that's no surprise.

Come on Parv, the cage blow-off at Shea may have been nothing special, but the initial matches between Bruno and Larry at MSG and Philly were pretty good

Hogan vs Andre from the early 80s also applies, other than the Philly match from March 81

I disagree on Hogan/Andre at least for the Mania match. It wasn't a good match but it was a satisfying end to their feud. I think you can have a so-so or bad match that still ends the feud well.

 

I also kind of like the first Taker/Kane match. It wasn't very good but I liked how Taker just had to throw everything he had at Kane and got pushed in a way only Foley had pushed him before.

The first was one the best out of the 3 but it went downhill from there. Which is like the cardinal sin of multi match feuds.

Yeah, the Inferno match was garbage. Dumbest gimmick ever.

 

I think Sting/Hogan is obvious for this. Huge feud that had everyone dying to see the match and then both matches were total inring disasters.

WCW vs NWO in general didn't produce many good matches. I remember liking both of the War Games well enough but can't remember much else standing out besides the odd tag here and there.

The Uncensored 97 clusterfuck was pretty sweet

I really love the concept of the Jake-Rude feud in 88 and while the matches weren't exactly horrible, they weren't great either.

 

Shawn-Bret never really had an in ring feud except in the summer of 92. 96 was just one match and 97 they very rarely wrestled each other on TV, if at all except SS 97 IIRC.

One of my most mark-ish moments as a kid happened when Paul Heyman and the original Midnight Express showed up on TV to beat up Stan Lane/Bobby Eaton/Jim Cornette The matches that followed, however, were not very good.

The two that first came to mind have already been mentioned: WCW vs. NWO and Savage vs. Roberts (well, this one under every Jake feud since Mid-South). Maybe Undertaker vs. Ultimate Warrior?

Marty's dope bust kind of screwed up the feud with Shawn. It's not like they had zero good matches. But the primary house show feud, where they would have the fake non-match, then restart it later on the card, was wildly disappointing even as they were trying to work it hot/heated.

Shawn was a real chore to sit through on offense during that time period.

I'm not a fan of Shawn in pretty much any period.

 

But even given that, the one house show that I saw between the two, using the same template the used in a lot of house show matches, was wildly disappointing.

 

In contrast, the Shawn-Razor ladder match out here prior to Mania was pretty damn entertaining.

Shawn says it was Razor who taught him to work singles, so maybe there's some truth in that claim after all. I too find 92-93 Shawn boring as hell on offense, and with a pretty lame finish to boot.

WM4 is horrible

I'd say Rude/Sting some of the matches were good . Though for the most part the big ones were underwhelming. I'm referring to the singles matches.

A little off topic but I really enjoyed the Michaels/Duggan Raw matches from 1993. I was really dreading those and they turned out to be fun. I liked the match Michaels/Jannetty did when Jannetty won the belt but that was it as far as their feud went. The Royal Rumble match in particular was brutally disappointing.
