Hell yeah, Kris! Very cool. Todd is perfect for this (given his past at being so good with it, and also being handicapped at the same time by a bored with his job, snarky guy who was in control of the show & his appearances. This, much like Martin at the Torch, is a MUCH better fit (even if its just for this week, or periodically)

Sorry guys, Todd Martin = no listen for me. If he's gone next show I'll tune in. Also, I thought this was related to that weird dirtsheet of the dirtsheets website for a second.

Enjoying this so far, will finish it off this evening. Todd is fine, but I don't think he's knowledgeable to hang with KrisZ or Bix. He does always raise some interesting points thought.

 

I personally learnt that Sting and Sid were working AJ in 1989.

What is the issue that people have with Todd Martin?

I don't know if people are offended by his stature as an "expert", but it's not like he ever carried himself as one. He's just a fan with opinions like all of us are.

 

I personally enjoy hearing him on shows so I look forward to this.

I have never understood the Todd Martin hate either. He seems like a decent dude and always seemed to have his own opinions so it's not like he was Ben Miller. He was pretty bad when he started but he gradually got much better. I stopped listening to most Observer audio years ago but here he seemed to be relaxed and sounded like a very different person.

 

One small criticism is that sometimes you comment on things but don't full explain them. For instance, I recall comments along the lines of "the finish for that match was very creative" or "they followed up perfectly the angle that happened in the previous PPV" without going into the details because all of you on the line already know what happened. I haven't watched the GAB in ages, and even so I have the memory of a goldfish, so I found myself lost or not understanding some parts of it.

When I was 12 I was a HUGE Spivey fan. It's a shame that his body broke down early and that he aged so badly.

 

In a better world he could have been (a much better) Kane for a few years and then retired the wrestler and the gimmick.

Well and this one was built around a legendarily great top to bottom PPV where we wanted to address every match. Most won't be.

Chad had him worst worker for Bash 89. We both had him worst worker for Clash 9. Just don't understand the praise at all. "Really talented" seems a massive stretch to me.

Here's the Sting match we were talking about. It's awesome, if a bit oddly laid out in parts. He's allowed to have good matches that weren't on PPVs or Clashes.

Re: the Great American Bash. I just read this today actually, from a July 93 Observer:

 

"7/3 Omni card billed as "The Great American Bash" was canceled a few days ahead of time. Reason given was that Vader, Barry Windham and Paul Orndorff would all be unable to wrestle, but that has been the case for weeks at every house show, none of which were canceled. Real reason appears to be that the last time a house show totally bombed at the Omni drawing 1,100, Kip Frey was done and Bill Watts was brought in. They can die on the road but nobody at TBS knows about it. If they die at the Omni, since the Turner employees can attend those shows, people start asking questions about how the company is being run. Better to punt than try and run on fourth-and-long. Definitely a bad sign when an Omni house show is canceled, although Bill Watts did the same thing when the same situation was about to occur."

Kris - I'm intereted in the Sting peaking in 89 stuff. Do you believe he was that badly derailed by the knee injury? I've always looked at 92-93 as his best years.

He was a smarter worker in 92-93 definitely and more sound but 89 he was doing some really athletic stuff that he couldn't do as much of post injury. I loved Sting in the early 90's too but if he hadn't had the injury who knows man

I enjoyed this and didn't have a problem with Todd at all. Admittedly at times you almost forgot he was there, but at the same time he would pop up with titbits and snippets of information that added to the discussion. As someone who is ploughing through some 1989 AWA at the moment, I liked the talk about The Team Challenge Series and matches that were held in that 'pink room', as the podcast explained the reasoning behind it.
