October 10, 20159 yr comment_5703531 Jokes aside, he's been with his wife for well over a decade, and has kids. It's hard to imagine him not sharing an interest with one or all of them in some fictional non-wrestling television. If there was one really great feature about Dave in the time I spent around him it was the he really enjoyed sharing things with people.
October 10, 20159 yr comment_5703586 I guess I should have said that Dave is obsessed with wrestling seeming hip and current. I'm a fan of his, but hip has never been a word I'd have used to describe him personally.
October 10, 20159 yr comment_5703665 "Hip and current" and "references to the past" are not mutually exclusive. Hell, Seth MacFarlane built an empire around making jokes about things from the '80s.
October 10, 20159 yr comment_5703669 To me, I think focusing too much on current pop culture comes off really lame. When ECW would do those videos of Raven's Nest to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with wrestling footage mixed in with the video, it made me roll my eyes because it seemed like a desperate attempt to latch on to what's cool. I do think if you're going to have a musical act perform or have a guest celebrity on the show, it does need to be someone relevant. But I don't think the framework in which announcers work should only be current knowledge.

Not that I disagree with you, but I'm curious about your thoughts on Memphis promotional music videos.

Right, that was my point. Dave doesn't realize that "dated" references actually can make something seem more hip.

Those don't bug me because they don't intersperse the original video like they're trying to make me think Kurt Cobain and Stevie Richards are pals that hang out.
October 10, 20159 yr comment_5703719 Well since someone brought up Memphis music videos...this is my favorite one and this isn't one that ever really gets talked about:

Good, good, I would been shocked if you had answered anything else. By the way, that little Memphis wrestling jingle they play before commercials is awesome.

But I don't think the framework in which announcers work should only be current knowledge. You are not wrong but I think having "updated" references could work if it is actually relevant to what is going on and it doesn't feel shoehorned in for the sake of saying it. The idea behind it is that you kinda want to be sitting next to a guy who knows what's up in the world at the moment...like fostering a sense of presence where you are watching something with someone. Of course the real issue is that as the commentary ages, it inevitably becomes outdated if you watch it again in ten years. So yes, I think it is a better bet to use references that ages well and/or that endures the test of time.
October 11, 20159 yr comment_5703906 Has Dave ever watched a fictional TV show besides 90210? He made a dated reference about Shawn Michaels a couple of years ago. When he came out with his sleeves rolled up Dave said he looked like Schneider from One Day at a Time. So that is another show he watched.
October 11, 20159 yr comment_5703924 Don't forget about his obsession with the Dallas TV show in the 80s
