Posted October 2, 20159 yr comment_5701915 I think it is, but it says it's a December 89 match. Does someone know for sure?
October 2, 20159 yr comment_5701917 The date is wrong--12/6/89 was a tag match with Jumbo and Tenryu on opposing sides. But yes, that looks like the 6/5/89 match which is generally regarded as their masterpiece.
October 2, 20159 yr Author comment_5701918 Nice. Thanks, dude. I really appreciate it. I didn't want to watch unless I knew it was the classic.
October 3, 20159 yr comment_5702022 I would recommend watching their other high profile singles matches before this. Ditch still has them up. What ever happened to Ditch by the way?

October 4, 20159 yr comment_5702234 Youtube's got at least two of 'em: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPj7BpNwVrc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ngkqi-acR-k And a whole bunch of tag matches with various partners, if you feel like searching for those.

October 5, 20159 yr comment_5702313 I do think the match benefits from some context, but I'm not sure how you might go around getting a sense of that through a handful of matches. Jumbo and Tenryu tagged a good bit, especially vs. Choshu and Yatsu. That is when Tenryu starts to look really good, but he's a clear #2 to Jumbo. Then after Choshu leaves in 1987, Tenryu starts "Revolution" with Hara and Footloose. Tenryu becomes a sort of heel / tweener anti-hero and his character work becomes a lot better -- or rather, much better suited to his role. Some one else could list particular matches, but I think it would be helpful to watch matches that: - Give you a sense of the Jumbo / Tenryu team dynamic (where Jumbo is plainly "the man") - Give you a sense of the anti-authority attitude of Tenryu and Revolution, and how they stick it to "the man". - Give you a sense of Jumbo's general levels of digust about the above You could just go into the match without watching anything, but seeing these things for yourself is more effective than simply being told about them.
October 5, 20159 yr comment_5702314 May I suggest editing the link to Ditch out of the thread. It's one thing for folks on Youtube to get taken down, but Ditch is a resource going back for years that we don't want to get fucked with. As far as what he's doing, he's working in DC a capcity that makes for another good reason for his sites not to be tossed around on the public boards here. -Sgt. Esterhaus, Hill Street Blues
October 5, 20159 yr comment_5702315 Yeah to be fair, my real suggestion would be to start with the Choshu invasion and watch all those tags up through the split of the Jumbo-Tenryu duo and then all the tags with Yatsu and whatnot. That's the way to watch this stuff. It's all well worth taking a look at, 85-89 All Japan might be my favorite wrestling. EDIT: I forget how much exposure this board has now with all the podcasts. This was a safe place at one point. Link has been removed. Original poster can PM me if interested.
October 5, 20159 yr comment_5702332 The Jumbo vs. Tenryu kinda starts with the 4/16/82 30 min draw, which is excellent. After Tenryu's turn in May 87, there a few tags with Jumbo on 1 side, Tenryu on the other prior to the 8/31/87 match. 1 tag match turns into a wild 6 man.
October 6, 20159 yr comment_5702614 What exactly happened to cause Tenryu's turn in May 1987? How was it presented to the crowd / viewers? Been wondering that for a few weeks now after seeing a bunch of Jumbo / Tenryu tags and how good they were together.
October 7, 20159 yr comment_5702671 Choshu left. Tenryu wanted to move up opposite Jumbo to fight for #1.
October 7, 20159 yr comment_5702677 Oh, so there was no "turn" like Choshu did to Fujinami in 82? Interesting..thanks a ton jdw...
October 7, 20159 yr comment_5702690 No there was a turn. He abandoned Wajima in a tag match against Tiger Jeet Singh and Texas Red. It's on the DVDVR set as an extra.
October 7, 20159 yr comment_5702691 Right, one of Tenryu's other beefs was being asked to team with Wajima, so that was part of the turn.
October 7, 20159 yr comment_5702926 People know what it was all about: Choshu left, creating an opportunity for Tenryu to stop being Jumbo's partner and go out on his own. Baba tried an angle, but turn is a bit problematic word since the fans didn't exactly go heel on Tenryu.
October 8, 20159 yr comment_5702958 True and it certainly won't come off as anything dramatic if you're looking for the equivalent of Orndorff piledriving Hogan or something. I just wanted him to know there is a moment.
October 8, 20159 yr comment_5703016 Yeah weird I've been looking to find this again for months but it's always this match on YouTube. Seriously an easy ***** and a match that I've watched a bunch of times. And with not even all the context of the story or matches before it(because I just don't have the patience to watch all these lesser matches for context). And maybe I'm a bad fan or a mark for that but oh well. I kinda have always been like now now best best since I first got into Puro in 2003. Just jumped straight into 6.4.94, 6.5.95, 1.20.97 basically. Best of Kobashi, Kawada etc. because at 14 or 15 I had to get quality for my money. It's funny how easy kids have it these days with all this Puro online without waiting a full day to download it, if that was even possible. The only tape I didn't sell during my hard times at 18/19 was the 6.4.94 Misawa /Kawada Highspots tape. Not for any GOAT respect reasons either ha. A freakin tape with 1 match on it was 10 dollars not so long ago
October 8, 20159 yr comment_5703124 Kids had it easy in 2003. It was hard back in the 80s and early 90s.
October 8, 20159 yr comment_5703127 Kids now miss out on the fun of ordering a tape and waiting four weeks for it to turn up. Then watching a match that's has a crowd in black and white and two wrestlers so out of sync and blurred that if it wasn't written on the listing your have no idea who they were. God I miss those days, it was like Christmas every time a tape showed up. Then you would see if at the end of the tape, if there was an unlisted Gem. Now with wrestling so easy to watch, I think its lost some of the fun.
October 8, 20159 yr comment_5703144 Oh, I don't know if it's lost it's fun. Plenty of people are having fun watching stuff. Hoback and I had a great time recently watching stuff that either (i) would haven been extremely hard to get in the 90s, or (ii) just wasn't in circulation at that point. I had it "easy" in the late 80s and 90s getting the weekly puroresu shows: Japanese video store. That wasn't an available path for most hardcore fans in the US. Living in LA, I also had an easy path to Lucha television: it was broadcast on my TV. On the flip side, commercial tapes were tough: a limited number of collectors got them, and the pricing was high. I wouldn't say it was insanely unreasonable: $20 for a tape wasn't out of line with what movies tapes were going for. But like getting movies, it also meant you were selective in what you got unless you were really rolling in the cash. The first big change was the expansion of the "trading" aspect of collecting, probably in the second half of the 90s. I have this, you have that, let's work out a trade. the big collectors in the 80s and early 90s might do that among themselves, or their suppliers of certain material. But the typical consumer wasn't. Changed in the late 90s. A number of folks here built up collections that way. Then of course the digital era, both in DVD and downloading, then in stuff simply being up on video sites. It's not been bad. Lots of stuff out there if one wants to look.
October 9, 20159 yr comment_5703355 I grew up in a town of 1,000 people. Finding certain commercial WWF tapes was a challenge!
November 7, 20159 yr comment_5709006 On my computer, I have singles matches dated: 8/31/87 10/10/87 10/28/88 04/20/89 06/05/89 (might have the 06 and 05 around the wrong way on that one) 10/11/89 12/06/89 Firstly, I'm sure some of these are dated US and some UK way, so apologies for that. I just wanted to ask whether there are any gaps in terms of their singles stuff that would be worth seeing out. This feels pretty comprehensive in terms of number, but I wouldn't be surprised if something was missing.
November 7, 20159 yr comment_5709007 The only other singles match they had was from the 1982 champion carnival tournament. 4/16/82 15 min of the 30 min draw aired on tv.
