I just remembered reading a thread somewhere where everyone seemed to think the 60 minute was a classic, so maybe you were referring to the March match as not being impressive. I don't know, I definitely liked it a lot. I'd love to see the previous months 60 minute match now though.

The Broadway is divisive. I liked it a lot, but I've only seen it the once, about 6 or so years ago. I know Parv, one of my partners on the Titans of Wrestling podcast (mostly about Backlund era WWF) hated it. I really didn't like the finish to the March 79 match. Valentine returns to NYC in 1981 and the two of them have several classic matches during that run. 11/23/81 at MSG is my all-time favorite Backlund match

One of the '81 matches featured the title being "held up" for a month until the rematch, correct?

Yeah, 10/19 at MSG ends with the title held up. 11/23 is the rematch. Definitely watch the two together. They also have two in Philly, with the first bout being really good, and a rematch in a cage

I also liked Backlund/Koloff a lot. Never quite understood why being unable to continue didn't cost the champ his title, but it allowed a big push for the next months rematch, I suppose.

Is that the one where they spend half the match with their head stuck between the other dude's knees?

That does turn out to be a pretty good match and well worth watching, but the blood stoppage does seem kind of out of nowhere.

The blood stoppage was a go-to Vince Sr finish, used as a way to get out of a match without having to give a disivive outcome and to prolong the series. Watching these matches years later, I agree it's one of the worst finishes, and I groan almost every time one happens. I'm sure even the fans of the time hated it. Basically it was a loophole that exploited the whole "the title can only change hands by pinfall or submission" rule

That all makes perfect sense.

I just watched this Backlund/Koloff match for the first time the other day. As someone not used to the blood-stoppage gimmick, I was all WTF JUST HAPPENED??!!

I almost rioted.
