Posted January 15, 20169 yr comment_5720702 Roddy Piper vs. Jesse Barr (7/19/80)Barr was a pro for about 4 months here and it was funny watching these two try to work a babyface match but both men get angry when the other one tries some rougher tactics. Piper headbutting Barr in the corner with Barr following up with a quick nearfall was a nice spot. Barr would get a headscissors on Piper and they took it to the floor where Piper helped Barr up but Barr just pounded him on the apron and now Roddy is pissed. The fans were going nuts for Piper as the young Barr was trying to prove himself although he got busted open hardway and it kinda threw him for a loop. Piper would finally make a comeback and he would put Barr away with a reversal of a Barr cradle. This was a pretty fun little match here but not enough for a nomination.Buddy Rose is out next with his mask on where he wants to put his mask and Ed Wiskowski's hair on the line against The Sheepherders but Wiskowski doesn't want to put his hair on the line. Rose is really good here trying to sell Wiskowski on this and he succeeded.2 out of 3 Falls Match: Fidel Cortez, "Playboy" Buddy Rose, & Ed Wiskowski vs. Jonathan Boyd & The Sheepherders (Butch Miller & Luke Williams)Boyd with long hair is always wild to see and the fans love the Sheeps. Sheeps were dominant in the 1st fall with Buddy doing his best to avoid getting involved but the Sheeps would send Wiskowski into him knocking him off the apron where Boyd would go to the floor to beat Rose up a little. Cortez would get the advantage on Luke and the crowd was going nuts cheering for Luke to fight back and it's amazing watching the Sheeps getting RnR Express treatment from the fans. Boyd would get caught in the corner and that allowed Rose to come in the ring since the heels were in control and he got some shots in before leaving again. Boyd would hit a big flying knee off the top rope on Wiskowski to take the fall. Sheeps cut a promo between falls saying that they won't accept Rose's challenge for a hair match. The 2nd fall starts up with more of the same as Wiskowski gets worked over but Cortez would come in and caught Butch in the shoulder allowing the rudos to finally get some extended offense in. The heels also bust Miller open as well so they work over the cut a good bit. Miller was good working FIP before getting the hot tag to Boyd who runs wild on Rose here with Rose bumping all over the ring to the floor. It would end up with Cortez & Williams in the ring with Cortez using the Cobra Clutch to win the 2nd fall. Rick Martel cuts a promo between falls talking about his upcoming match with Buddy Rose. The 3rd fall starts with Cortez working over Luke's throat again with Rose & Wiskowski getting their shots in as well. Luke would get the hot tag to Boyd who came in hot but got a knee right in the gut from Rose and now he was getting beaten on with various claw holds before tagging Luke back in. This would end up with everyone fighting each other but Rose & Miller were the legal men. Wiskowski snuck in though and got an O'Connor Roll on Miller with Sandy Barr counting the pin even though he wasn't the legal man but Wiskowski put Rose's wig on to trick him. This baited the Sheeps into accepting the hair match in a promo afterwards with Don Owen coming out and saying that he would make it a cage match. This was a really fun match with a creative finish and I'll pass this forward as a low-end nomination.Jonathan Boyd vs. Roddy Piper (7/26/80)Again another babyface match with Piper where tempers would flare but it was more the old fashioned way with both guys getting more intense as the match went on. Both men would really start teeing off on each other in the final two minutes of the match but it wasn't enough to beat the time limit forcing a draw. Good match but not enough for a nomination.Next we get promos from the bald Sheepherders where they announce they are leaving the Northwest after this show.Jonathan Boyd then cuts a promo next where he thanked Piper for their match and would love him to be his partner one day against Buddy Rose's Army. Then we get a promo from Buddy Rose without his mask now but still with the wig with a JR Ewing shirt which is perfect for the time. Rose said that he is just like JR Ewing in that they manipulate to get their way.The Sheeps then cut their last promo in the Northwest and they are leaving as tag champions after beating Fidel Cortez & Igor Volkoff and they want to give the belts to Rick Martel & Roddy Piper. Rose is back out with his mask on demanding the belts since they beat them for their hair. Martel & Piper come out and said that they don't want the belts given to them they want to earn it. This leads to Martel/Piper vs. Rose/Wiskowski next week. Extra material. Then we go to the next week with Rose & Wiskowski saying that they were going to win the titles and run Martel & Piper out of town next.Decision Match for the vacant Northwest Tag Titles: Rick Martel & Roddy Piper vs. "Playboy" Buddy Rose & Ed Wiskowski (8/2/80)Gotta love everyone getting flowers entering the ring even the heels. Man that 1st fall was really great as the babyfaces looked like dynamos against this great heel team especially Rose who was bumping and selling like crazy here. The heels would take control though with both using some sweet bodyscissors holds as the fans went nuts for Piper wanting him to get to Martel who was awesome working the corner and then when he comes in the ring he runs fucking wild on the heels before getting a pin on a swank huracarana on Rose. Martel cuts a promo between falls on Rose talking up their singles matches that week. Martel starts the 2nd fall strong working over the heels until he misses a dropkick and the heels take turns relentlessly working over his back. This control section was so damn good man. Rose was amazing working the corner as well on the heel side and even broke the bottom rope because he was standing on it so much. Piper coming in trying to save Martel at every chance he could was also so good. Martel fighting back was fun before Rose dropped him with his swank backbreaker to even the falls. Jonathan Boyd then cuts a promo between falls about being a one man army against Rose. Martel's back continues to get destroyed as the 3rd fall starts but Piper would get the hot tag with 6 minutes left in the match and he just goes nuts teeing off on the heels before the match gets totally out of control and they brawl to the floor for a double countout which doesn't stop them as they continue to fight. The titles are still vacant but each team puts a claim in for the belts afterwards since they split falls and the last one was a draw. Don Owen then sets up a rematch which leads to another wild brawl. Excellent match here and a slam dunk nomination. No DQ Match for the Northwest Heavyweight Title: Rick Martel © vs. "Playboy" Buddy Rose (8/9/80)This had some really good back and forth matwork to start which wasn't boring as both men were working holds and keeping active. This didn't last long though as Martel chases Rose around the ring and when they come back in the action gets pretty fierce. Both men are so great at selling and bumping for each other that it definitely made me wish Martel had stayed in the AWA in 1986 and had a feud with Buddy then. Martel would get the 1st fall with his huracarana pin again and this was so damn good. Frank Bonnema announces between falls that the NWA Pacific Coast Wrestler of the Year would be presented later on tonight before talking to Roddy Piper who is selling a throat injury so he can't talk in his normal voice and Piper said that he may not be able to wrestle much longer because of it. Piper is fucking awesome here talking about Martel saving his life earlier in the week from a beating by Rose & Wiskowski. The 2nd fall starts up with both men feeling each other out until Martel starts working over Buddy's back like a madman. Martel just dominates the whole fall here until Buddy picks Martel up and drops him on the turnbuckle with Martel falling right on his head to even the falls. Rose starts the 3rd fall roughhousing Martel and working over Martel's ribs so Martel counters by trying to rip off Buddy's mask where you see Buddy's hair underneath which is dark. Buddy is now pissed and just kills Martel with a double foot stomp on the ribs. Martel though is tough and comes fight back with his own stomps on the ribs before Rose tries his turnbuckle move again but Martel counters with the same move that he lost to in the 2nd fall on Rose to win the 3rd fall. Tremendous match here and another slam dunk nomination.Rose then cuts a promo after the match talking about what he's done since coming to the Northwest and demanded a Loser Leaves Town match against Martel.Roddy Piper vs. "Tough" Tony Borne (8/9/80)Piper is still emotional from everything that has happened lately and he takes it out on Borne here but not before Borne takes the match to the floor where he bashes Piper's head into a chair. The best part about this match is it looks like Sal Martino was the referee.Don Owen comes in the ring next and announces that Rick Martel won the NWA Pacific Coast Wrestler of the Year and of course Rose shows up as Martel gives his speech whining about not winning it so he takes it from Martel and destroys it naturally. Martel then cuts a promo with his broken trophy and that they will have a Loser Leaves Town match next week with Rose coming out as well. Fantastic angle and a slam dunk extra.Hair vs. Hair Match: Roddy Piper vs. Luke Williams (3/1/80)The Sheeps were heels here as members of Buddy Rose's Army and Luke had big hair here. Don Owen announces before the match that Butch Miller & Rose must be handcuffed to the ringpost so they won't interfere. Nothing fancy here as Piper just starts taking it to Williams until Luke catches him with a thumb in the eye before he started roughhousing Piper. This is worked at a frantic pace as there was only an 11:00 time limit which was so Portland. Luke would miss a big splash off the top rope before Piper missed a cross body block right onto referee Sandy Barr sending him flying to the floor. Luke would get a steel chair but Piper would dropkick the chair in his face. Sandy Barr would get rolled back into the ring and counted the pinfall. The babyfaces would have to hold Luke to a chair so he could get his head shaved. Short match but fun as hell and a definite extra.
