If Tiger Mask's mask came off in 1990 and it was Bret Hart under it and he was treated the same as Misawa going forward, Bret would be the GWE!

Let's keep the thread going from here because this kind of "projection" seems like something that should be discussed more especially if more people were doing it.

Blah. I watched a shitload of NJ from the 80's last year and Kosh was terrific. The Takada feud is classic. And in the 90's he was the miracle worker of turning shit into something fun, plus some usually strong performances on G1's.

As butt offense goes, Maximo didn't even get nominated.

Not me. It even seems to be going through a bit of a renaissance in modern wrestling. I'm still waiting for someone to really bring psychology to it and try to preempt the butt offense like people used to try and go after Hansen's Lariat arm.

I'm pretty sure I also called Koshinaka dropping off when we went through the SC list a month or so ago. Basically because I have never heard anyone talk about him or pimp him or say they'd put him in their 100. He was a total afterthought through the process. I'd have been way more surprised if he was any higher.

I like Koshinaka and actually agree with El-P's take on him. Not on my list, but someone I enjoy much of the time. It's just that most critique has pointed out his prolific butt offense.

I didn't vote for him, but Koshinaka is a guy who can turn chicken shit into chicken salad. He isn't someone who I ever go out of my way to watch, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when he shows up. I wouldn't want to watch a Koshinaka box set, but he's a huge breath of fresh air once every 50 to 100 matches.

Hopefully when you saw the ranking you didn't accidentally only see the pic and think it was Lawler being ranked at that spot.

I knew it wasn't Lawler. There were enough intelligent wrestling fans who had him in the Top Ten.

Ono was another of mine, albeit in the bottom quarter somewhere. The 2009-2010 FUTEN run was pretty spectacular and I'm also in the "Ono/Ikeda is the best sub-5 minute match in history" camp.

 

Koshinaka finishing in the top 100 even in 2006 sort of surprises me. I can't think of many wrestlers who have such a huge gap between their lowest lows and highest highs. He bored me to tears on the New Japan 80s set and was one of my least favourite guys on it, but then he gets older and grumpier and is often very fun during the NJ/WAR feud. Had a nice run in the '96 G1 as well, if my memory of it from the yearbook is worth anything. I enjoy watching him match up with Tenryu about as much as I don't enjoy him matching up with Takada, and it's not necessarily because his opponent is dragging him up or down a level (this is not me taking a dig at Takada, btw).

Koshinaka really flew around by the seat of his pants. Sorry, had to get that one out of me before it poisoned my brain.

Right now there are about 180 wrestlers listed where I'd gladly sacrifice every single bit of footage they have on tape if it means I could watch more Takeshi Ono matches. By any metric the guy kicks the shit out of anyone else listed. Except maybe Lizmark. Lizmark rules. The challenge I posted in his thread still stands: name a wrestler with a better Top 10 matches.

 

Average vote of 70 for Rick Steiner is nuts. I mean, placing him at 99 when you really need to fill out your ballot, that's fine, but the time spent on this project could have been used to find better talent.

I ranked 182 workers, it just so happened Rick Steiner finished there.

I'm not surprised to see Ono, Usuda, and Greco at this point in the countdown. I'm just hoping Otsuka, Ikeda, and Ishikawa are a lot higher.

Only my second fallen soldier, as Dos Caras drops.

I will admit that I have not seen any BattlARTS stuff. Mostly because most of how it is pimped is "Man these guys are really beating the shit out of each other!" which is not something I really want out of wrestling.
