June 3, 20169 yr comment_5755910 Chad and I wrote a piece about this match and its potential as a SummerSlam 1991 main event. What do you guys think? Could it have worked? Other options? Sarge certainly would've taken issue with the link as yet another example of American greed, but I'm looking forward to the article Having not read it yet, curious whether the idea for Summerslam is a rematch or pushing the Mania match back and headlining that show with something else. Certainly seems like a rematch could've worked, but may have required changing the layout at Mania a bit and then a hot angle to ensure Slaughter's heat over the summer. You likely take that the route of the Desert Storm Match they ran at MSG. Pair that with the wedding and I'm sure the show sells just as well as the Hogan/Warrior tag.
June 3, 20169 yr comment_5755911 (Edit: So I'm not crazy and that link is a Fidelity PDF about New Hampshire 529 savings.) Anyway, I'm not sure if or how much it might have affected the gate or buyrate, but Hogan/Slaughter had been blown off with a Desert Storm match in at least a dozen markets that summer, including New York.
June 3, 20169 yr comment_5755915 I think the Desert Storm match should have been at Wrestlemania earlier in the year personally. As for Summerslam 91, I also suggested a Hogan/Warrior vs Taker/Jake match (but with Savage instead of Sid as guest referee) when discussing rebooking 1991 for the SCG podcast. As for Slaughter, I'd have slid him down the card for a match with Duggan. The way I picture it, Adnan and Mustafa could interfere causing a DQ, and proceed to beat down Duggan. With the crowd chanting USA, Slaughter then sees the error of his ways and turns face, saving Duggan and waving the flag, leading to the Slaughter/Duggan alliance that actually happened later that year anyway.

June 6, 20169 yr comment_5756309 i just don't buy any form of Hogan-Slaughter moving the needle at that point. if you look at the build to Wrestlemania, it was basically "Hogan's going to win the title back for AMERICA" - they didn't do much to pretend Slaughter had a chance. and nobody was buying his flunkies as anything meaningful, even if Mustafa did get the only(?) TV pinfall win over the British Bulldog that year.
June 7, 20169 yr comment_5756335 I'll go back to what I said in another thread, that they should have put Slaughter on ice for awhile after WrestleMania. The war was over so they really didn't have to milk it anymore.
June 7, 20169 yr comment_5756337 The match should have just been Warrior, Hogan, Sid vs Slaughter, Mustafa, Undertaker, no?
