These storylines would actually seem cutting edge if the writers were writing them with the intent of making them deep, relatable or even freaky characters instead of for comedy, which is all this will be played for. They're booking way out of their league.

They had it right with the initial Goldust character. He was so freaky that it worked. But then they couldn't resist trying to make it over the top and funny. That fact, along with GLAAD being on their case, led to the death of the character. They could have done something with Billy and Chuck, but that angle met the same fate.

Well they've had transvestites (Harvina and Goldust, almost Melina), lesbians (Sable, Torrie, Dawn Marie, Mickie James, HLA) and overtly gay characters (Rico, Chuck and Billy, Goldust), all that's left is bisexuals to be exploited for really poorly written and badly timed comedy.

But all the characters you mentioned as gay weren't, even in storyline. Rico had a beautiful female valet who he kissed a fair bit, Chuck and Billy were disgusted at almost going through with the gay wedding and Goldust also had a female valet. WWE has never had a single openly gay wrestler, or even really a suspectedly gay one, unless I missed one somewhere. And the lesbian thing is just bullshit to pull ratings and titillate teenage boys.

 

If they want to do storylines, and have one about a confused bisexual man, then I'm all for it if they do it with the tiniest bit of dignity. But they won't.

Chuck and Billy were portrayed as gay up until the angle even if they did admit it was a publicity stunt. I believe they even went on a pro-gay TV show the week before the angle.

 

Goldust had a crush on Razor Ramon and was stripped down to his lingerie by Roddy Piper.

 

Whether it's bullshit to titilate boys or not, they've ran angles with Dawn Marie coming onto Torrie, Sable coming onto Torrie, currently have Mickie James kissing and complimenting Trish Stratus and ran a segment based on Hot Lesbian Action on Raw.

I wonder what would have happened if instead of Muhammad Hassan, they pushed an openly gay wrestler with the same angle -- claiming to be discriminated against, stuff like that. I wonder if it would get over if done right, and if the crowd would cheer or boo, and how much mainstream pub it would get.

It'd never work because they always end up chickening out. They kind of did that with the Rainbow Express in TNA but Lenny Lane kept getting hurt so they dropped the angle.

I unfortunately could see an ECW ONS like "You suck dick!" chant becoming prevalent whenever that wrestler appeared. Campiness is one thing, trying to portray a wrestler as being gay, open about it but not letting it get in the way of his profession that he's actually quite good at is something I doubt the writers can even fathom at this point and something that I have to wonder if wrestling fans would actually be able to dismiss and rally behind.

Gay wrestlers can get over, the Heart Throbs pulled it off in OVW, but it'll never happen in the WWF. Vince is just doesn't have the refinement in booking to pull it off. Though I've wondered for the last couple of years if Vince is repressing some serious homosexual urges.

The Heart Throbs worked on a small scale however they clearly have not adapted well to the big time. I think the problem is educating a small, faithful local crowd is a lot easier than trying to educate a global one where cultural differences may affect people's perceptions. Also given that the focus is on singles wrestling in WWE and they ran the Billy and Chuck angle as far as they could, I don't think Vince even had a serious interest in letting them keep the same gimmick they had as the Heart Breakers. I personally don't think someone's sexual preference should even enter the realm of wrestling on this level asince it's a very sensitive subject but obviously others at WWE disagree.

If this was somebody who was worth a shit, I'd probably care. But, as it is, it's just Orlando Jordan, y'know?

 

The WWE writers couldn't pull it off, OJ doesn't have the charisma to pull it off, so whatever. Just so long as it doesn't get a lot of time on SD.

There isn't a chance in hell anybody could make Orlando Jordan in a bisexual angle any good. Goldust was able to pull off an alternate sexual lifestyle because he has what we in the know like to call a "personality" or "charisma". Orlando Jordan can't even make his hairstyle seem interesting.

Adrian Adonis was the only gay character I can think of who was actually supposed to be gay and not just pretending.

Yes. The planned ending of the Batista/Melina rape angle was to reveal Melina as a transvestite, but Stephanie McMahon shot it down, thinking it would ruin Melina's career.
