Posted February 6, 200619 yr comment_4460438 Maybe this topic has been brought up before but I doubt it. The Street Fighter II-Mortal Kombat argument got me thinking ... what is your own personal favorite fighting game? If one game is not enough then what is your favorite fighting series? I have been running this around in my head and my favorite fighting game to this day is Soul Blade for the original Playstation. While most of the characters may seem like old hat now I thought they were the most original characters I had ever seen in a fighting game. While the stereotypes may not have been original (a barbarian, a pirate, a ninja, a knight, etc.), the way the weapons fit perfectly to the character was awesome. Taki had a short range but super speed. Siegfried had awesome reach but was slow as hell. Rock was big, lumbersome and powerful. The weapon breaks, the specials, the throws and even the ring outs all made the game an awesome experience, especially compared to what else was out there. To me, the best part of the game was the challenge mode wher eyou had to accomplish certain objectives in order to advance the story and pick up the extra weapons (another plus). While it wasn't a training mode, when you completed each quest, you really felt like you mastered the character. I know the sequels have all had mind blowing graphics and all have produced different features but I still feel the first one is the best of the series.
February 9, 200619 yr Author comment_4475633 I can't believe no one here doesn't have a favorite fighting game.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4476011 Somebody has to say that Virtua Fighter is the deepest game ever made or that SF3 is the greatest Capcom game ever made or that KOF Orca storyline is the only reason to play SNK games.....blah blah blah. Cannon this Cannon that.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4476111 I'm just afraid to mention I prefer Mortal Kombat or else I'll get clubbed by the intellectual fighting gamers who have to educate us MK rubes why SF is the superior game.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4476135 I don't know about all that. My favorite fighting games are Killer Instinct, which is filled with glitches, Mortal Kombat 2 and X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, which is flooded with infinite combos. I like Street Fighter Alpha 2 a lot too but I never really got any good at it. I'll play anyone in KI or MK2 though. I just won an MK2 tournament last Friday and a Marvel Vs. Capcom tournament two weeks before that. I spent so much money on Killer Instinct when it was in the arcades it was ridiculous. It's amazing how much joy I'd get out of adding one hit to a combo. I guess that means my answer is Killer Instinct. It blew my mind when it first hit the arcade because the graphics, sound and big hit combos were fantastic to see, listen and watch. I hate, no despise pretty much any fighting game with a "ring-out." Soul Caliber, Virtual Fighter, all that stuff. I'm not high on polygon fighters in general. I fucking hated Tekken. Maybe I was just bitter because games like that became popular, I didn't like them, and they took players away from Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4476153 My favorite changes constantly. At the moment, I'd go with the Dreamcast version of Street Fighter Alpha 3. Garou: Mark of the Wolves is starting to become a favorite as of late.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4476825 Soul Calibur II. I'm not big on fighting games, but I love this game. Pretty easy to pick up and play, but there's a fair bit of depth to it to, if you wanna get into it. Plus, it just looks fucking beautiful.
February 9, 200619 yr comment_4480280 Tekken 5 and Street Fighter III 3rd Strike. Both have the right balance between complexity and technical skill and a great roster of characters. They've also got some of the best art design. I used to be obsessed with MK and would have said MK Trilogy but the past few years I've been getting increasingly apathetic about the series. The more I play other games the less tolerate I am of MK's flaws and limitations.
February 9, 200619 yr Author comment_4480322 Man, I just picked up Tekken 5 and it is the first Tekken I have become frustrated with. I am hitting the buttons but the button movement seems delayed like I am always a step behind.
February 10, 200619 yr Author comment_4481658 Could be my controller or that I just suck at the game. Any tips? ... Especially since I picked it up on your recommendation
February 10, 200619 yr comment_4481996 I don't play polygon fighters and am partial to nearly everything Capcom makes. I'd be hard-pressed to choose a favorite Capcom fighting game; I genuinely enjoy them all.
February 10, 200619 yr comment_4482577 Could be my controller or that I just suck at the game. Any tips? Don't know. Tekken is naturally stiff and rigid but 5 is just as responsive as the others.
February 15, 200619 yr Author comment_4515878 It was my controller. Turns out I wsn't able to sidestep because the up arrow on my D-pad wasn't responding so i was getting my ass handed to me. However, I have now gone through and zipped along like a pro with half of the characters. I don't like the boxing characters (Steve, Roger, etc.) but I am officially addicted.
February 16, 200619 yr comment_4517073 Who do you play? It's basically universally agreed that Steve Fox is the best character in the game.
February 16, 200619 yr Author comment_4523023 I like Jin, Heihachi, and Kazuya. I have been playing with one of those guys since Tekken 2. King is another guy I like being a wrestling fan. Steve Fox may be the best character in the game but I don't enjoy playing as him.
February 17, 200619 yr comment_4526608 I used to rock the house with King, but sadly arcades became extinct here around the time of Tekken 3 and I've never owned a PS2. One day I'm gonna pick up a used system and go on a fighting game spree, starting with all the Tekkens.
February 21, 200619 yr comment_4549770 I mostly play Bryan, Feng, Paul, Asuka & Julia. But I've also been known to mess around with Mishimas, Kuma, Anna, Marduk and pretty much everyone else on the roster at one point or another depending on mood. Playing seriously, with something at stake I stick with Bryan and Feng. Yay for big damage juggles. I guess right with a high crush you lose half your life. Paul and Asuka are for fun. I want to like Julia a lot. Huge damage but linear, unsafe and CH dependent. Playing her is high risk/high reward. Often it just doesn't seem worth it. I play T5 basically every single day. I play 5.1 at the arcade, practice on PS2 or meet up with other arcade regulars to play on PS2. I'm pretty sure it's my most played game ever by quite a bit and also the game I've spent the most money on. The arcade should get Dark Resurrection this week or early next week. I can't wait. It's going to be great....but I will somewhat miss 5.1 since they'll be no way to play it anymore.
