On the other hand, you have Sting becoming a career top guy simply by taking the world champion to a time limit draw. Bob Backlund is also arguably an example of the title making the wrestler.

I don't think it's even arguable, the WWWF title was so protected that even transitional champs could ride the reign for the rest of their career
