March 2, 200619 yr Author comment_4595382 I kinda hope Michelle Williams wins just so Tom Cruise's head will explode over someone else becoming the first Dawson's Creek alum to win an Oscar.
March 2, 200619 yr comment_4595448 I doubt she wins. I'm betting Cruise has given LOTS of money to the Church of Scientology to make sure that doesn't happen.
March 2, 200619 yr Author comment_4595812 I just hope they don't give Best Director to Spielberg again, it seems almost like he's pandering, "Lookit! I made another jewish/Israeli themed movie! Gimme an Oscar!" I just watched Walk The Line, and I agree with the Reese Witherspoon LUV that's everywhere. I just wonder how many people under 30 realize that June Carter Cash really was like that and Reese wasn't overacting. I think Brokeback takes the Best Picture and Director awards, Hoffman gets the Actor nod, Clooney gets the Supporting Actor (and Bill O'Reilly has a stroke), and Rachel Weisz gets the Supporting Actress. Of course, the Academy will probably do something stupid as usual like giving Best Actress to Keira Knightley (who's career will ebb as her HAWTNESS~! does).
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4596223 Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain. I think it's a forgone conclusion at this point. I don't see any of the other nominees pulling the upset. Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Another forgone conclusion by all accounts. I'd love to see Terrence Howard pick it up but for entirely selfish reasons. As it is, I'm happy just to see him get a nomination. The same goes for Phoenix and Ledger. It seems like yesterday that all of these guys were just starting out. Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon. But don't be surprised to see a Felicity Huffman upset. Again, I'm very happy for Reese, especially if she wins. I'm not a fan of her Sweet Home Alabama and Legally Blonde stuff but I was super-high on her in things like Election and Freeway. I knew she had "it" so I'm glad the rest of the world is recognizing, too. Best Supporting Actor: Matt Dillon. Matt Dillon just has a knack for embodying these types of characters, characters I'm not even entirely sure how to describe. It goes all the way back to The Outsiders and Drugstore Cowboy. I don't know how Paul Giamatti got nom'd for Cinderella Man here. That spot should've gone to Terrance Howard's performance in Crash and he likely would've walked away with a statuette. They had no problem nominating Jamie Foxx for both categories last year (Best Actor for Ray and Best Supporting Actor for Collateral), they could've done the same for Howard this year who really had two fantastic breakout roles, while I wasn't impressed enough with Foxx in Collateral to think he deserved a nomination for it last year. Best Supporting Actress: A complete toss-up for me. I can't choose anyone. But I'd do'em all. Yes, that includes Frances McDormand. I've had a thing for her for a long, long time. Best Director: Ang Lee. There's no telling who the Academy'll give this to but I'm pulling for Ang. He deserves it. Especially considering all the crap he took after Hulk. He came back strong and movies like this is where his strengths lie (so hopefully he sticks to them and leaves re-inventing classic comic book characters alone) as evidenced by stuff like The Ice Storm.
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4596279 In typical Oscar fashion, I've seen very few of the movies up for nomination. But like other years, I'll get around to the majority of them eventually. I can't see Brokeback not winning Best Picture, even though I'd like to see Capote take it. Phillip Seymour Hoffman seems like a lock for Best Actor and I'm hoping Reese takes Best Actress. Her presence in Walk the Line automatically put it above Ray, since she became as dynamic as the lead and after a certain point, even more so. I'm not really familiar with the rest of the nominees (in their roles, that is), so I won't even take a stab at predictions there.
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4599298 Charles Krauthammer has a great piece on Syriana: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6030201209.html
March 3, 200619 yr Author comment_4600084 I didn't even need to click on that link to know what the story was going to be about. Once I did and saw the title "Oscars for Osama", that was all I needed to know. "Charles Krauthammer" and "great piece" don't belong in the same sentence unless it's an ironic statement. How great do you have to be to rehash tired conservative Hollywood bashing?
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4600589 Good to see Reese finally land a role on par with her talent. She's been in movies that have made her a box office draw for years now, but few that have really showed off the full extent of her talent. Freeway and Election convinced me that she could do anything.
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4600915 I haven't seen a single movie that's up for Best Picture. Just curious but how many of you people even plan on watching the Oscars? It doesn't seem like a big deal anymore. Maybe it's just because I've been down on Hollywood for awhile now but it seems like the Oscars used to be hyped a lot more and shit.

March 3, 200619 yr Author comment_4601045 Oh I read it, but all I needed to see was the title to see my predictions were correct. It's nothing more than a collection of right wing Greatest Hits, repackaged for Oscar season. Hollywood is full of liberals? Check. Liberals hate America? Check. Liberals root for Terrorists? Check. Verbal Fellatio towards a Bush Approved sockpuppet leader? Check Attacking anything they don't like as anti-American? Check. The whole column's nothing more than the usual Ann Coulter nutball screed toned down for more civilized consumption.
March 3, 200619 yr comment_4601116 PR0NFAQ: i have no idea how savagerulz and sek managed to make the fuckin' OSCARS thread a political debate but damned if they didn't just do it Both of you stop. Is there any folder you guys don't bicker with each other?
March 4, 200619 yr Author comment_4601136 There doesn't seem to be. It certainly wasn't what I intended when I started the thread.
March 4, 200619 yr comment_4601496 There was a lot more information in it than these random generalizations. Krauthammer went through the movie, Syriana, and critiqued it - extremely well.
March 4, 200619 yr Author comment_4601509 I don't want to derail this thread any longer, it's already burning in a heap at this point.
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4609302 Jon Stewart's opening monologue was funny. I laughed out loud (and pretty hard) quite a few times. George Clooney wins Best Supporting Actor for Syriana: "Okay, so I'm guess I'm not winning Best Director." Wallace & Grommit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit beat Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki for Best Animated Feature? In what universe?
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4609441 Most of Stewart's monologue seemed too formulaic. He's usually funny, but a lot of the jokes seemed too paint-by-numbers. The western montage, Ben Stiller, Ferrell, and Carrell all cracked me up, though.
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4609635 Sek: And here comes Morgan [Freeman, presenter for Best Supporting Actress], the only man cool enough to say FUCK TIES! Me: "Ties? Look at these people with TIES. *scoffs* I say FUCK TIES." Me: *after viewing Rachel Weisz's clip from The Constant Gardener* Okay, I'm guessing Rachel Weisz doesn't have to beg men to take her ANYWHERE, especially not when she says as "your lover, mistress, wife..." Sek: *after watching Weisz take the stage to collect her award* Lets hear it for pregnancy boobs. Me: No shit. Let's hear it for ADJECTIVES. She has plenty to describe the folks she's thanking -- she said Ralph Fiennes was "luminous", her director was "brimming with humanity" and called the script "unflinching and angry" all in the span of 30 seconds off the top of her head. Jesus Christ, I'm in love.
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4609805 Okay, Three 6 Mafia winning a god damn Oscar and their acceptance speech = hilarious. I love how Stewart couldn't hold back laughter after, either. He's loosened up a lot since the opening monologue.
March 6, 200619 yr Author comment_4609954 Crash is Best Movie? I know certain folks didn't want Brokeback to win, but over Munich, Capote, and Good Night, and Good Luck? Umm, no.
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4609988 have to love the Hollywood Press. In the post show junket: "George (Clooney) are you dating Terri Hatcher?" Reese: "Who did your dress?" Really hard hitting questions
March 6, 200619 yr comment_4610004 I've finally seen a Best Picture Winner before it won the award, during it's original theatrical run.
