Anyone else pick up the on not-so-obvious "DVDs are bad; theaters are good" message they were dropping in there throughout the show tonight?

All those montages made me realize was how often I'd go to the theaters if they'd play those films here and there.

Of the best pictures, I've only seen Crash and Brokeback. I liked both alot, so I won't complain, but I felt Brokeback had more of that epic Oscar feel to it.

I plan on seeing the other three, and I get the feeling one of them was a better choice.

Best line was Jake Gyllenhal's about how you can't watch an epic movie on a portable DVD player. He knew the line sucked ass, so he just let out that stupid laugh of embarassment after it received no reaction, and THEN the audience started laughing.

I'm taken aback by the backlash Crash snatching Best Picture has created. I'd heard so few negative things about the film, but now that it's won Best Picture, people are coming out of the woodwork to complain about how it was transparent, simplistic, and not all that unique.

I don't see how Three 6 Mafia winning an Oscar is "hilarious." Unexpected, maybe but that's only because of the times and social climate we live in. They were happy and that made me happy and I'm sure a lot of people, especially fans of rap, were glad to see it happen. Don't even start with the "Well, Eminem won for 8 Mile" shit. At least Queen Latifah and Jamie Foxx got to express their satisfaction. The only reason I got a chuckle out of the whole ordeal was because everyone ELSE in the place seemed so shocked.

Is secret homophobia fueling a possible 'Crash' upset?

All the talk of how Hollywood was using Brokeback to advance some sort of gay agenda has no idea how fuddy-duddy the Academy voters are.

Consider people being shocked that a rap song could win an Oscar in 2006. We're supposed to believe the same folks that took 20 years to acknowledge rap would somehow be part of a secret plot to advance alternative lifestyles.

I guess Stewart said it best: "For those of you keeping score at home, Three 6 Mafia, one, Martin Scorsese, zero."

It's just funny, because now they can call themselves "Oscar-winning Three 6 Mafia," something I just never thought I'd hear. The unfortunate thing about their performance is that anyone who hadn't seen Hustle & Flow or heard about it, got the wrong impression from the title of the song performed and the performance itself. Anyway...

Relive the Hilarity.

I guess Stewart said it best: "For those of you keeping score at home, Three 6 Mafia, one, Martin Scorsese, zero."

And Stewart became an authority on hip-hop when...??? I guess it's easier to make fun of what you don't understand. And I don't even think Stewart made fun of them; he understood their elation and commented that it seemed like they were the onlly people excited to be at the Oscars and that's how you accept one.

You can't compare Scorsese to Three 6 Mafia. He's a director, who unfortunately, has been bested by his competition from year-to-year. Three 6 Mafia DESERVED their Oscar. Imagine Hustle & Flow without that song in it or a lesser one in it's place.

I guess if the subject matter is foreign to you and the artists don't speak like you do, that somehow makes the people responsible less worthy of such an honor or beneath everyone else. Cultural differences, not to mention hundreds of years of not being afforded the same opportunities as your "peers" tend to result in both of the above.

No one said he did.

Again, who said he did? My take on it was that most people feel that way when they win an Oscar, but Three 6 actually showed it, instead of being reserved. There's nothing wrong with that; I'd like to see more people that excited, but for professional reasons, I can see why there aren't.

I think you're taking the line too seriously. It wasn't a direct comparison, but just sort of mindblow to think that Three 6 Mafia has an Oscar, while Marty doesn't. No one said their contribution to the movie wasn't worthy and in a category that was as thin as it was, I had no problem with them actually winning.

Not sure if you're directing this towards me or everyone in general.

Is it more or equally mindblowing that Eminem has one and Marty doesn't?
comment_4611853

I'd say less. Eminem's been accepted into mainstream pop culture, whereas a group like Three 6 has always had their own following, but aren't household names. Obviously that doesn't make their contributions any less valuable, but if a year ago, you would've told me that Three 6 Mafia was going to be winning an Oscar, I would've suggested we go use up what was left of whatever weed you'd been smoking.

It seems like you think I'm saying that it's mindblowing that a rap artist won an Oscar and that's not it at all. Three 6's contribution to Hustle & Flow was huge, I don't argue that. It's just odd to think of them having an Oscar, since they aren't as popular/mainstream as someone like say, 50 Cent.

Speaking of Three 6, someone was upset that they weren't wearing tuxes last night.

...because Hollywood is ran by a bunch of old, white, behind-the-times jews?

When you think of the Oscars, you don't think of a bunch of black rappers winning awards. That's what the VMA's are for. ;)

Whoa, I can't believe I totally aped Primo's comments about Reese Witherspoon earlier in this thread. My apologies; that's what I get for not paying attention.

Don't worry. I'm used to it. :P

IMDb Movie of the Day

She's not even 30 yet, and already Reese Witherspoon has impressive roster of characters to her name: Tracy, Elle, Becky, June. And though she's not as well known as the others, I still say Vanessa Lutz whips them all as Reese's most memorable creation to date. Barely legal at the time Freeway was filmed, Reese's electric performance in this shamelessly perverse and shameless take on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood was the first indication that she would someday be a household name. Only a fearless performance could mesh with director Matthew Bright's story: After her prostitute mother (Amanda Plummer) and abusive stepfather (Michael T. Weiss) are hauled away by the cops, Child Protective Services comes around to take Vanessa to yet another foster home. Instead of following that dead end, Vanessa grabs her basket of things and hits the road for her grandmother's house -- a couple days' drive on I-5 north in California. The proverbial wolf here is characterized as a serial killer preying on young girls along the interstate, and Kiefer Sutherland's performance is as frightening as it is comedically brilliant. Their encounter requires both actors to cover a lot of ground, as they careen precariously from fairy tale to hyperviolence to black comedy to camp; Sutherland's experience grounds the movie, and Witherspoon's nuanced performance imparts humanity to what easily could have been a caricature. Supporting performances by Brittany Murphy, Alanna Ubach, and Bokeem Woodbine solidify Freeway as a cult classic, and Brooke Shields pings the camp-o-meter as Sutherland's clueless wife. Don't mess with Vanessa, and don't skip Freeway on DVD or cable. - Arno Kazarian

I'm just glad she finally gets her due props. There wasn't a lot of doubt about her winning for Best Actress (I don't think), but it was still nice to see. A lot of us have enjoyed her work for several years, but she's still been one of those slept on actresses that I think a lot of people thought wasn't capable of working past the Legally Blondes of the film world.

I think he's right on when he talks about how those who are now bashing Crash, are doing so because they wanted Brokeback to win. If it had been another one of the films to win, they would've attacked that. Honestly, I was shocked to find so much negativity about Crash after it won. Until that point, I had heard little but praise for the film; certainly none of the harsh reviews that labeled it transparent, trite, and a R-rated after-school special.

Brokeback had a real double-edged sword happening there. Had it won, we would've heard the masses come out and say it only won because it was about gay cowboys. Now that it didn't, we're hearing that Hollywood is filled with homophobes. It's unfortunate that few people seem to be actually considering which was the better film; rather, the agendas of those involved are what's being scrutinized.

So let's look back at how well I did:

Best Picture: My Pick - Brokeback Mountain. Winner - Crash.

Best Actor: My Pick and Winner - Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Best Actress: My Pick and Winner - Reese Witherspoon.

Best Supporting Actor: My Pick - Matt Dillon. Winner - George Clooney.

Best Supporting Actress: My Pick - Undecided. Winner - Rachel Weisz.

Best Director: My Pick and Winner - Ang Lee.

3 for 6. If I were smart I'd have went with Clooney and not my sentimental choice of Dillon. Going with my heart screwed me. But by the same token, NOT going with my heart caused me to NOT pick Rachel Weisz, easily my favorite actress out of that bunch but since I hadn't seen any of the movies, I couldn't make an educated pick. And personally, we all know Brokeback Mountain should've won Best Picture. So all in all, I'm actually 6 for 6 and PERFECT as usual. Bow before me.

Three 6 Mafia Thank Foxx for Oscar Inspiration

Hip-hop outfit Three 6 Mafia credit Jamie Foxx with giving them the confidence to deliver a barnstorming performance at Sunday's Oscar ceremony. Rapper Jordan 'Juicy J' Houston, who picked up the Best Song Academy Award for the track "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" featured in Hustle & Flow, was terrified by the prospect of appearing in front of the star-studded audience and billions of television viewers. But the sight of Ray actor Foxx smiling up at him gave Juicy J the inspiration to hit all the right notes. He tells MTV, "We were in the dressing room and they called us, 'Three 6 Mafia, 10 minutes. Three 6 Mafia, five minutes.' I walked up and I was relaxed, then I started getting a passing-out feeling. There was so much going on, I was so excited. You're talking about the Oscars, billions of people. That's all that was going through my head, 'Billions of people.' Then they said, 'Three 6, to the stage.' When I got up there it was like I was in a boxing match or something. I was moving around and getting myself some heat, body heat. I peep up into the crowd and saw Jamie Foxx looking up smiling. I was like, 'Aww s**t, Jamie Foxx' It was like he was giving us props. When I saw Jamie Foxx doing that, my confidence went back up. After (the performance) I was planning on leaving and going to the bar - then bam, we won the Oscar."
