March 7, 200619 yr comment_4617414 Not to defend Bonds... but, this is beating a dead horse. Bonds already testified to a grand jury that he "unknowingly" took steroids. I'd like to see all of Barry's stats thrown out too... including other cheaters like Sosa, Giambi, Caminiti, etc... but, let's drop this situation and leave Barry alone about it.
March 7, 200619 yr Author comment_4617513 Yay! A Barry defender right here on NMB! Despite you saying you aren't, it's pretty much what you did. It's not beating a dead horse when the book pretty much shreds Bonds' side of the story, including that the never knowingly took steroids.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4617526 Saying you want his stats thrown out is defending him? It sounded more like she was just tired of the story.

March 8, 200619 yr comment_4617586 I'll say this: Barry Bonds is one of the only players in baseball the can make me stop channel surfing to watch his at-bat. Steroids or not, that's a testament to the man. You can say steroids make it so he can swing the bat faster, hit the ball farther, etc. but he still has to do it and he does.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4617627 Having heard Leena speak on the subject before, she's hardly a Bonds defender.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4617804 Lol... I'm certainly not a Bonds defender. I just don't see the need of this book. We know Bonds took steroids. And we know he didn't rub some cream on himself just for the hell of it.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4617821 I'm with Coffey in that I will stop to watch a Bonds at bat. I'm sorry, but that still captivates me today.
March 8, 200619 yr Author comment_4617825 I guess I'm just a little sensitive since I got called a "pious twit" over at DVDVR for daring to suggest that a player who's record setting stats are due mostly to chemistry is a cheat. I didn't think it was passe` or old fashioned to expect sports to not tolerate drug usage, but then someone always throws it in your face that *insert player from 50+years ago* was involved with drugs, booze, whores, etc so we should excuse Barry.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4618139 Steroids make you a stronger, faster, better athlete in every physical way. They make you less susceptible to injury, decrease recovery time between training sessions and strengthen musculature throughout the body. Yes, they do enhance your eyesight, do a little research on the subject before being snide. A member of a different message forum that I frequest said this and I was just curious what the people here thought about it. Now, from everything I've ever heard, steroids make you more susceptible to injury. At least that's what it seems like in wrestling. Have I been misinformed for years or is this dude just an idiot?
March 8, 200619 yr Author comment_4618149 They make you more susceptible to muscle tears, and that becomes more of a problem in wrestling than other "real" sports since Bonds didn't have to body slam 300 pound men every night while roided to the max.
March 8, 200619 yr comment_4618217 The fact is that there is no comprehensive study on the effects of steroids. There certainly is some indications that steroids help recover from injuries, and of course they are used legitimately in hospitals for that reason. I think there's some fragility issues around, but I'm uncertain on that front. I don't think steroids have shown to benefit eyesight. With the advent of Lasik surgery, that's really a moot point. My theory is that steroids improve your batting eye indirectly, because a batter with increased muscle mass can swing the bat quicker, giving the batter an extra split second before deciding whether to swing or not. I doubt steroids benefit the eyes themselves.
March 8, 200619 yr Author comment_4618282 Wasn't that Vince's excuse during the steroid trial? I know there wasn't any study at that time, but I'm pretty sure there are such studies now. Besides, when people talk about steroids now they're usually referring to the newer batch of supplements that aren't the old fashioned testosterone boosters, but things like HGH and the like.

Due to the illegalities of steroids and other factors, there is no good method to produce a truly good, scientific study on the effects of steroids. We have empirical evidence and case studies, but nothing concrete.
