I was gonna post this in the "thoughts that don't merit their own thread" thread, but then I decided it probably does merit one.

St Patrick's Day is coming up, and as most of you know I'm Irish. I was at the grocery store today and naturally all the stuff you normally associate with the event were out for sale. It made me wonder, people usually "pretend to be Irish" that day, which to them means going out and getting drunk. Part of me thinks it's funny but another part of me (probably the part with the shamrock tattoo) is offended at that being what most non-Irish people think of when they think of what it means to be Irish. I mean, if I said I was going to celebrate Martin Luther King Day by going to KFC and getting a 40 of Olde English, what would people think of that? That's kind of how I feel when I see people celebrating St Patrick's Day by going out and getting hammered.

I mean, do people slick their hair back, wear gold chains, and pretend to be in the Mafia on Columbus Day?

Maybe I'm just oversensitive, but as a white guy this is the one day of the year I feel like people are making light of my heritage and I guess I'm just not used to dealing with that.

Being Protestant and of Scottish descent, I wear something orange on St. Pat's Day and avoid downtown.

I've always found the St. Patrick's Day celebration to be strange for exactly the reasons given by sek. Crawling home blind drunk with a green tongue seems like an odd way to give homage to a Catholic saint.

We all know them blacks like County Club better than Olde E, for both flavor and the fact that it's 50 cents less.

On a more serious note though, I'm off from work on St. Patricks Day. Which makes it just as good a day to get wasted as any other day I have off from work. And more of my friends are around on Fridays, so there will be no question that I'll be "one of those people".

Part of it is Irish stereotype and the other part of it is good old-fashioned excuses to get fucking plastered.

Same deal with Mardi Gras. It's supposed to be a last celebration before 40 days of sacrifice for Lent, but it's mainly just an excuse for most people to party and do all kinds of things they don't normally do.

People just like reasons to drink.

That certainly makes sense, although there are plenty of people who don't require a reason...

Yeah, but they feel it's more justified with a reason, regardless if it's valid or not. Sort like excusing the consumption of fatty foods from Thanksgiving to New Years.

HAH! A Country Club mention. Priceless.

and its O-E not "Olde E".

My 21st birthday falls on the 17th, which makes it a joint occasion to get absolutely plastered.

Al, I was looking at the St. Patrick's Day Bulls jersey & shirt, but I didn't know how much mileage I could get out of it. It's a sick combo, though.

For the past 2 weeks it's been beautiful out, now they're saying come Friday, it'll be 36 degrees with the possibility of some snow showers. Terrible. The luck of the Irish had better prevail.

I think the hat's easier to get away with because the Phils actually wear them on St. Patrick's Day.

I should really get here more often. sek said what I had been thinking at the time. It really is foolish, isn't it?
