Every time HBO does one of these, Dave devotes at least a page of the Observer to how it's the Greatest Program in the History Of TV, and also how This is How Wrestling Should be Promoted.

(Before this one, they'd all been boxing shows, by the way)

Jimmy didn't win 'tona. The race had a horrendous pair of deadspots due to a freaking pothole. The finish was "great" until you slow down to remember the last 10 laps were re-start-o-rama that was getting painfully annoying by the last one, and was only saved because fans gto fired up by Junior coming out of nowhere to challenge. Hell... the live coverage couldn't get touch on the best part of the "great":

 

Junior got beat while driving the best equipment in the field by someone driving for what's left of his Step Mom's (and his own) old team.

 

It's 'tona so people will oversell the "greatness" of the finish, both because it's Freaking 'Tona and also (which folks usually forget) it's the first race of the year and NASCAR Fan is all geeked up after not having any racing for several months. By April fans will remember that far too many races end in freaking re-start-o-ramas. By June, they'll be banging their heads against the wall over it. By August they'll be slowly clicking away to other things as Football starts up.

 

Note: I'm a NASCAR Fan going back to when Cale Yarborough was driving for Junior Johnson. So I'm being critical of something that I've enjoyed for 30+ years.

How funny would it be if Daniel Bryan's character was some sort of beach boy who always has the perfect tan? The bitching and complaining from the ROH zealots would be legen - wait for it - dary!

I'm hoping they portray Danielson as some no nothing greenhorn to the point that the Miz needs to teach him how to run the ropes and lock up!

WWE pairing Miz with Danielson has to just be WWE fucking with smarks.

I'm not familiar with Danielson's work and had never seen Nigel McGuinness before TNA. I don't understand why smarks think decent to great workers can only be presented as serious, legitimate shooters. Do they not understand anything about this business? Has there ever been one successful wrestler with a completely bland character?

 

That said, I don't understand the hype around McGuinness (he is Desmond Wolfe in TNA, right?). He looks goofy to me with the shaved head, little sunglasses, and Walmart windbreaker. His ring work is dull and he cuts promos that evoke memories of Sid Vicious. Am I just missing something?

I think - and I'm only maybe 25% joking here - is the appeal was he threw a lot of clotheslines (excuse me, "lariats") so it reminded smarks of their favorite puro guys.

*Daniel Bryan, 28, the former Bryan Danielson. Good enough that he would walk into WWE and be the best technical wrestler in the company. His size is a detriment and he doesn't have that star look, but he's very likeable and this format, plus being the clear standout of the cast, could work for him. The Miz will be his mentor. Danielson is far more experienced in the business than Miz. He starteed wrestling in 1999, and first signing with WWE in 2000. He was tag team champion in developmental a decade ago before being let go, and has wrestled for Pro Wrestling NOAH and New Japan on tons of major shows, let alone his experience as ROH champion, and this is a curious pairing. But it's entertainment, and it can be fun watching Miz teach him how to work, and how not to antagonize the locker room.

Nigel's one of the few ROH guys that I always thought had major-league charisma and presence, along with probably only Punk and Joe. He carries himself like a star. His run as ROH champ produced a lot of entertaining promos and some really good matches with guys like Danielson and Generico.

 

My favorite heel Nigel moment was getting Danielson to agree to a match where there would be no strikes to the head due to Nigel's recent concussions, Danielson passing up opportunities to win the belt with his elbows finisher, and Nigel then repeatedly headbutting Danielson en route to a victory. Great stuff.

Miz and Daniels will likely be the "conflict" of the show, you have to remember Miz is a vet of reality shows either that or we are going to see the Hybrid Douchebags in WWE.

Nah it was just Daytona since it is the big daddy race of NASCAR.

As a lapsed ROH devotee, I always felt Nigel and Claudio both had that "big-time" potential because of their size, their ability to wrestle, their charisma before, during and after a match, et cetera

I'll have to look at Nigel's ROH work, then. When I see him in TNA I see a jobber's windbreaker and a guy trying to look cool in outdated sunglasses.
