Two things I'll always remember from Taker's debut at Survivor Series:

 

1. The hush over the crowd as they were trying to figure out what they were seeing since this was like nothing they were used to.

 

2. Piper on commentary doing his goofy schtick as if he was trying to bury the gimmick right out of the box.

On the WM3 / CNN "results", I suspect it was limited to the main event, possibly Piper-Adonis, and possibly Savage-Steamer. Most likely just the main event, and the size of the crowd.

 

I recall a few other Manias popping up on Sports Center or elsewhere in the 80s, again the focus just on Hogan's match.

Yeah, it was mostly, "There was a thing called Wrestlemania this weekend. Lot's of people went to it. Hulk Hogan was there. How 'bout that!" I wouldn't really call it giving the results of the show.

Regarding Jimmy Hart being the greatest manager ever, I'm not sure I'd go that far. Will's right, he's awesome, but he didn't have Heenan's longevity and his prime was in the '70s in the AWA. Maybe if we had more footage from that period, we'd be raving about Heenan in a similar manner?

Keith, I only go by actual footage I have seen. Heenan could have been awesome in the AWA in the 1970s but unless KHawk unearths some footage, I am not sold. This isn't someone who dislikes Heenan. I love Heenan but Jimmy Hart sold me on nearly every angle he was in while in Memphis. For that 4-5 year period, I have never seen another manager come close for so long week in and week out.

They have been showing a lot of his AWA stuff on demand lately, I think Heenan in that period was at least as good as Hart was in Memphis. Not to mention Heenan was involved in a lot of tag team/six man matches during that period where he did a lot of his crazy bumping as opposed to Hart who's big spot was running like Usain Bolt. Again, not saying Hart wasn't great but I think Heenan was at least as good if not better since he was actually capable of working a decent match.

I've only just started from the beginning so I haven't gotten to Whoa, Nellie! yet, but there's plenty of pro-wrestling stories in the original run of Love and Rockets. One of the main characters is loosely based on Moolah, I believe. It's actually the best "wrestling in other media" stuff I've seen. I love how they never break kayfabe.

WM6 got a LOT of coverage in the newspapers up here in Canada at the time. It was a very big deal. Obviously most was on Hogan-Warrior, but I recall in the sports section some photos of other non-Hogan-Warrior matches, plus they even had listed results.

 

I don't recall WM18 getting near the coverage that WM6 got.

Hart's involvement in Memphis vs. Heenan's in the AWA is really an apples-and-bananas type of comparison. Promotional strategies and TV product were too different. Hart was perfect for the Memphis style of TV and angle-building and Heenan was perfect in the AWA's "less is more" approach on the TV end of it.

 

If you transplanted each into the other's territory and time frame, I don't think either would have been as effective, for what it's worth.

I think Heenan could have done better in Memphis than Hart could have done in the AWA. Although I really would have enjoyed Hart ripping on Greg Gagne.

LOL @ Dave pointing out in the last WON that Alberto Del Rio's gimmick of being more educated and richer than everyone is basically a shoot Mil Mascaras gimmick. Guess that would explain why he's been so good at it the last few weeks.

The difference between Hart and Heenan in thier territories is that Heenan managed the lead heel while Jimmy Hart was the lead heel.

Did Kevin Kelly (Nailz) get injured at the end of his AWA run? Or did he just give up on wrestling until the WWF randomly called? Because if you look at Kevin Kelly in the AWA and Nailz in the WWF they are WAY different physically. And it wasn't just he didn't look cut anymore, he also had pretty shitty cardio.

I just found a show on The Comcast Network here called Showtime Allstar Wrestling and it's so southern indy it's awesome. It's apparently booked/owned by Reno Riggins and they run out of Tennessee. The show itself takes place in a bar/billiard room and is sponsored by a bail bond company that runs ads during the show. They have a guy doing what could probably be best described as a junior Ric Flair gimmick where he's brash and cocky but since he's Teen Excitement the bouncers won't let him in the bar the show is being taped at. They did a great bit where he had a Flair style spaz out in front of the bar, then still was able to hit the catchphrase at the end of his segment. The wrestling was pretty good too, considering most of the guys are people you've never heard of. It's like a weird time warp to southern territory wrestling that somehow got transported to 2010. I've already set a series recording on my DVR based on tonight's show alone.

SAW is run by Reno Riggins with Jerry Jarrett money - or at least it was. They've had several good tv matches this year.

All pro-wrestling fans should watch the documentary Marjoe about a former child evangelist who exposes all the carny tricks of the "church tent" Revivalist circuit. So much carny goodness, so many killer promos. It's on youtube if you're ever bored.
