Someone like Phil might put out an anti-Jumbo rant here or there but JUmbo has such a huge body of awesome work that the argument wouldn't really hold water. It isn't like Inoki where there are tons of shitty Jumbo performances out there and we dug up the only good matches available. With Tenryu, I just watched the 8/87 match today. I didn't see sloppy. I saw a fucking battle. Then again, I can forgive execution if the story being told is worth watching.

Food for thought: What conventional wisdom in the smark realm has been challenged by those associated with the WON (for lack of a better description...Dave, Bryan, "Karl," former overseas distributor Mo, etc.), or is this not a direction to look in since the WON opinions usually helped form the conventional wisdom?

Alvarez sometimes goes back and reviews old shows playing on On Demand for his Bryan & Vinny show, and sometimes this changes an old opinion of his. One I remember specifically was him revising his opinion on Hogan/Warrior '98, saying that in retrospect it's just a simple bad match and not the "WORST MATCH EVAH, MINUS FIVE STARS" that everyone thought at the time.

He did? Huh. I thought I was the only one who found that match powerfully overrated. Mostly due to the WWF's dumbass escape-to-win rules, but it still didn't click with me anything close to how their Mania bout did.

 

I understand that Brody was popular among the hardcores once upon a time, but I think it's more contrarian to like Brody than it is dislike him these days. Aside from Gordi and of course Dave, I don't think I've ever come across anyone on a message board that actually liked him.

I'm a fan of Brody, but I approach it in the same was of how I'm a fan of Angle: I do see the flaws that people talk about, and wish that he'd do a few things better. But those flaws don't bother me nearly as much as they bother other people.

 

Fujiwara is an entirely different beast: Fujiwara Luv is something that popped up in the past decade or so, and is complete different from the old consensus.

What are some of the tip-top Fujiwara performances which are considered must-see? Fuji is a guy I've actively avoided watching, since I saw a few really horrible matches with him several years back. I'm wondering if it's a Dustin Rhodes case where I just don't agree with the DVDVR consensus, or if maybe I just happened to see a few atypically bad performances and somehow missed all his good stuff.

I have a feeling '87 All Japan will be like '84 New Japan on the set in that both companies struggled a bit after losing Choshu & Co. Of course I say that after wading through '87 TV (via. the internet) and watching far more Waijima content than is likely to be on the set.

Nah, I always thought the cage match was incredibly over rated. The night of the show I remember liking Razor/ Diesel more. While THAT opinion may have changed, I still think the cage match isn't the classic it's made out to be. And boy, some people out there react like frothing maniacs when you say that cage match wasn't that great.

Thanks Phil. I still have some doubts, since that Severn match you marked Great left me very nearly physically nauseous, but I'll check out some of the others.

What was your problem with that Severn match? Severn is pretty useless, but Fujiwara did at least four cool things in that match, and his selling during the final run was great.

It's been long years since I saw it, so my memories are rather fuzzy. Severn was obviously the weaker link; if anyone but Goto ever had a decent match with him, I haven't seen it. But the thing that sticks out in my mind was him endlessly hitting belly-to-back suplexes over and over again. The most ginger suplexes in the world, the sort of thing where you pick up your girlfriend and playfully set her down on the bed, that kind of shit. Fujiwara looked like a rather fragile old man who needed to be treated that gently. I might be remembering it wrong, but that's the impression that stuck with me.

That reminds me, Oliver's whole "I know what happened between Savage and Steph in Germany but I'LL NEVER TELL" deal is worse than him getting butthurt over people reporting his top secret MMA newz storiez IMO. It seemed like he was angry because McCool pulled a Bob Holly on a rookie, not because of specifically which rookie it was. That's consistent for him, since Chico has always been a loud proponent of working light and frequently goes on a bitchy rant when he thinks someone is being unnecessarily stiff.
