House Show Volume 003

Magnum T.A. vs. Ted Dibiase (date?)

This was really great, as it starts with a brawl on the outside with both guys taking big bumps on the concrete and onto tables, then DiBiase busts Magnum with the glove and he bleeds all over the place. T.A. is really great as a fired up babyface

Magnum T.A. vs. Ted Dibiase (date?)

In this match T.A. comes in with a bandage and starts spraying blood all over the ring, didn't have the epic feel of the first match, and had less crazy bumps, but it definitely felt DVD worthy and was a lot of fun.

Dusty Rhodes & “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan vs. “Hacksaw” Butch Reed & Hercules Hernandez

Really great old school come as you are streetfight. Reed and Hernandez bump all over the ring for Dusty and Duggan and it really has the street fight vibe. Reed was just amazing here. DVD selection for sure

Chris Adams vs. Killer Khan

Kris had this clipped on one of his tapes, but this is the full match and it is a total blast. Khan has great silent film villain facial expressions, and is a ton of fun as a stooge. I loved all of the teasing of the spike. This also had an incredibly hot finish. I was borderline on this match seeing it clipped, but it is a definite pick unclipped.

House Show Volume 005

Produced: 4-8 to 10-5-1984

The Fantastics vs. The Midnite Express

This is a high end match even for these two teams. Lots of great double team work, and Rogers was in for most of it. This is as good as any of the Fantastic v. MX stuff from Crockett.

Kerry Von Erich vs. Buddy Landell

Some fun spots, but not enough to put on the DVD. I imagine the backstage post match party was something to behold though.

These two teams have 3-4 tags/6 mans in Mid South and there is one tag that really stands out with Condrey and Eaton being absolute killers in murdering Rogers. And Fulton was not in a lot, which really helps.

First match is hurt by Ross commentary coming in in the middle as they dub in commentary while dubbing out the crowd heat. But first is better of matches as Magnum takes some big bumps, a nice posting, plus you have the table spots and the bodyslam on the floor. And I think that was the match with the great spiniing toe hold.

Second match really feels like a smaller market houseshow version. And I don't know if you put on both the Omni and the Gainesville version of matches. But second match had crowd mic'ed for entire match, giant blade job, and Dibiase with huge over the top rope bump.

I liked both of the Magnum/Dibiase matches. The 1st one on the tape was a really spirited brawl that was a lot of fun to watch. Magnum played the fired up babyface roll really well. He took a good beating. The blade job off the loaded glove punch put over the gimmick really strong. Dibiase fist drop is a thing of beauty. Everytime I see that thing I have a tendancy to mark out. I thought Ted did some odd things in this match. I didn't understand why he went to the spinning toe hold after Magnum being busted open. Ted took a big bump from the kick off of the toe hold which played into Belly to Belly finish. Overall, a good match but some of the stuff didn't make complete sense to me.

Now the second match between the 2 I feel was worked smarter. The brawling wasn't as good as the first match but the layout seemed better. Magnum again was busted open and bleeding like a pro. Ted works over the cut with an assortment of fistdrops, punches, head smashes etc.. Dibiase even works a sleeper on which made perfect sense with the blood loss from the cut. Dibiase's offence was based around Magnum's cut. Dibiase takes a big bump over the rope from the sleeper hold. This allows Magnum to work Ted's back with slams, and back drops. They set up a great spot where T.A reverses a piledriver into a back drop. They work to this awesome finish where Magnum atomic drops Ted into the ropes, Ted bounces off the ropes into a belly to belly for a 3 count. Just a well worked match.

The Dusty/Duggan vs. Reed/Hercules match was just a really great brawl. The early stooge spots and Reed's selling of them was really well executed. When both heels were feeding Dusty which ended with double bionic elbows was so great. Hercules took some really nice backdrops from Duggan. The crowd was super hot for this. If this took place in ECW it would be called one of the all time great matches in that promotion.I also liked how the come as you are factor played into the finish. Reed had just an amazing performance here.I would call this a lock for inclusion.

Kahn/Adams had some good stuff in it. Starting with Kahns facials and body language that were superb. Kahn working over the neck and throat of Adams was solid. The teasing of the spike was great. Kahn breaking the spike at 4 outside the ring was well executed. Kahn's 2nd rope knee drop kicked all sorts of ass. Adams sold really well, made good comebacks, and busted out his superkick which he does better than anyone. I thought Akbar working ringside helped. Akbars timing on his interference was spot on. I'm boderline on this match on inclusion though.

No DQ for the North American Heavyweight Title: Magnum TA © vs. Ted DiBiase (6/84)

DiBiase has come into Mid-South representing GCW and wants Magnum’s NA Title on this show in OKC. DiBiase immediately takes this match to the floor and throws Magnum on the ringside table and slams him down head first with Magnum soon returning the favor. This is nothing but a slugfest with both men brawling like crazy before taking it back to the ring but not for long as they go back to the floor. Magnum is just killing DiBiase but missing a running splash in the corner turned the tide as DiBiase soon took control. Magnum would soon resume his offense though but DiBiase loaded up the glove and nailed Magnum who bladed as soon as he hit the mat. Magnum is juicing heavily as DiBiase continues to pound on the cut by throwing him to the floor and ramming him into the railing and ringpost. DiBiase hits his signature powerslam and then goes for the figure-four but Magnum kicks him over the top rope. DiBiase climbs up top when he gets back but Magnum catches him in the ribs and makes a tremendous fiery comeback then hits the belly-to-belly for the victory. Tremendous match and another one that goes on the block.

North American Heavyweight Title: Magnum TA © vs. Ted DiBiase (6/84)

DiBiase jumps Magnum from behind at the bell but Magnum starts firing the punches and chunks DiBiase to the floor and here we go again with the brawl on the floor. Magnum pounds DiBiase’s head on the apron a few times and chases Teddy back in the ring. Magnum continues his offense until DiBiase pulls him through the ropes and to the floor where Magnum has juiced. DiBiase starts working on Magnum’s cut at ringside by slamming him into the railing where the female fans are hollering as he pulls the skin on Magnum’s forehead. Teddy then takes it back to the ring where he starts his offensive brigade by continuing to work on the cut with his diving fist drops. Magnum is a bloody mess and Teddy locks in a sleeper to weaken him further but Magnum would work his way back up to his feet and carried DiBiase over the top rope with his momentum. DiBiase would get back in and try for a piledriver but Magnum would backdrop him, which would fuel his comeback. They started trading shots and as said before Magnum was such a great fiery babyface on his comebacks. They would knock noggins and DiBiase loaded up his glove but Magnum ducked and caught him with an atomic drop followed by the belly-to-belly to score the pinfall. This was different and not quite as good as the OKC match but a solid nomination nonetheless.

Bunkhouse Match: Hercules Hernandez & “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes & Hacksaw Duggan (8/19/84)

This is also from Tulsa and Dusty’s specialty match, so of course it’s a wild brawl as soon as the faces enter the ring. Tulsa crowd is going apeshit for Dusty and he is totally in his element here as he just pounds the living fuck out of the heels and Reed’s selling alone is phenomenal with Herc’s looking great also. Duggan gets in and it’s more of the same as Herc gets to take the beating from him as Dusty continues to kick the shit out of Reed on the floor. Duggan starts whipping Herc with his leather belt but a knee to the back by Reed and neckdrop across the top rope turned the tide of the match. The heels then began to start give the faces a dose of their own medicine as Butch uses a steel chair on Dusty on the floor which of course brought out the juice. Dusty gets doubleteamed for a bit but Dusty becomes the BULLODAWOODS and starts clubberin the heels with double bionic elbows and knuckle sandwiches. Cornette would get involved by throwing powder in Duggan’s eyes and as Reed tries a piledriver, Dusty reverses into a backdrop but Herc put something on his boot and kicked Dusty in the head as he tried a pinfall thus giving the match to the heels. This was a fantastic brawl and a slam dunk nomination.

“Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. Killer Khan (9/9/84)

Khan teasing the Oriental Spike as Adams would counter with the Superkick taunt before the bell rang was great. Khan brushing his shoulders off before slapping Adams then getting slapped was tremendous. Khan’s whole repetoire of selling and facial expressions prove that he was from the Lexington side of Mongolia. Khan would get tired of playing around and started stomping a mudhole in Adams before choking him and playing to the crowd. Khan would get a nearfall after a cross chop and kept up his attack by choking Adams on the top rope then the middle rope as Akbar had Ronnie West occupied. Adams would make a comeback firing punches then dropkicking Khan into the corner. Adams started pummeling Khan and hiptossed him out before going to a rear chinlock. Adams would get a nearfall after a series of moves then back to the rear chinlock with Khan shrieking but he would get out of it. Khan hits a big knee to the head before a Mongolian Chop then kicking Adams to the floor. Khan would club Adams as he gets on the apron and then caught Adams with a knee to the gut when he came back in. Khan would get a bodyslam and signaled for the Spike but Adams rolled to the floor. Khan would then put it on him anyway with Ronnie West forcing him to break the hold. Adams would rabbit punch Khan to the gut on the apron and got a sunset flip for a nearfall with the OKC fans going nuts. Adams would then catch Khan with a Superkick in the corner then another kick and then kicked Akbar. Khan would catch Adams in the throat and high a kneelift off the top rope for the victory. This was tremendous stuff with Adams looking great and Khan being a great showman. Definite nomination.

The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. The Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey & Bobby Eaton) (8/9/84)

This is from OKC on the same day and we get the same start as the previous match only with Rogers this time against Eaton but the Fants would make quick tags on Eaton while maintaining the advantage with headlocks and when Eaton tagged Condrey, he was met with a headlock takedown by Rogers. This is also at lot more fast paced than the previous one as they are zooming around in the ring. Condrey offers his hand in friendship but that wasn’t happening and the Fants maintained their advantage with Eaton this time as he made the tag. They work over Eaton’s arm in armbar while switching in and out behind the ref’s back. MX then says fuck it and they start cheating and doubleteaming beating Rogers up and sending him to the floor. Rogers comes back in the ring and takes a vicious beating by the MX but tries his damndest to make the hot tag so Eaton goes over and knocks Fulton off the apron, which of course brings Fulton in the ring illegally and gets Rogers to eat a double karate thrust by Condrey off the middle rope. Fulton gets baited in again by Condrey doing the Ali Shuffle and Eaton chokes Rogers on the rope with his knee. Eaton would hit a great single-arm DDT into a hammerlock on Rogers as Fulton does his best on the apron to motivate Rogers to make the tag but that still doesn’t happen as the MX are relentless in their punishment. Rogers would try an inside cradle on Eaton but Condrey rolled him over behind the ref’s back for a nearfall then Eaton hit Rogers with one of the greatest dropkicks I’ve ever seen for another nearfall. Rogers would FINALLY hit Condrey with a back elbow smash and would tag Fulton in who came in like a madman and the 4-way brawl was on. Rogers was pounding on Condrey in the corner when he threw him to the floor and then pulled out the MEMPHIS CHAIN wrapping it around his boot but missed Fulton’s head and when they tried a double clothesline with the chain, Rogers tripped Eaton from the floor and Fulton hit a cross body block on Condrey for the 3 count. This was even better than the first one plus maybe being the best match I’ve seen between these teams so far and Tommy Rogers takes one of the damndest beatings I’ve seen so far on this set. Slam dunk nomination.

“Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Jerry Grey (4/8/84)

Squash.

“The Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich vs. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell (4/8/84)

Landell wearing white tights is something else. Landell is a great opponent for Kerry as he will sell his offense tremendously and will help make him look good no doubt. Landell gets a good chunk of offense here surprisingly making this much better than the TV match they would have almost a year later.
