Posted July 26, 200718 yr comment_5419801 It's a steel cage match where Roberts comes in wearing a hockey mask to counter Humongous' hockey mask. Early stuff building to Roberts loosing hockey mask are nice. I watched alot of Roberts recently but think this is the match where Roberts does the biggest Psichosis corner flip bump off a missed running knee lift. Finish is Humongous isn't hurt by DDT due to hockey mask's protection...taken out by DDT on chair. Really satisfying story.
July 26, 200718 yr comment_5419834 I was wobbly on this match, but I am going to go ahead and say it goes on too. It really is a stellar carry job, and Jake is so great at laying out a satisfying match, plus that Psicosis bump and Jake getting choked on the rungs of the cage was some quality violence
September 16, 200718 yr comment_5421927 Jake would have made a really great masked wrestler. I haven't seen a lot of pre-Crockett Georgia wrestling, but I'm guessing they were taught really well how to get over gimmick matches. At the '90 Royal Rumble, you see Greg Valentine applying a figure four on Ron Garvin, but Garvin doesn't sell it and points to his shinguard to get over the fact that they're both wearing gimmicks. Here, you see the battle of the cage shots, with both trying it on each other and it not working either, again, because they're both wearing gimmicks. Later, when Jake loses the hockey mask, he gets thrown into the cage and this time, he's juicing. So immediately, Humongous is more imposing because you understand the advantage he has on a regular basis now just by wearing the mask. This is just such a great match. The cage is over, the match is over, the gimmicks are over, and as a result, the wrestlers are over. Funny how that works. This really feels like a lucha match at times with the mirror offense (Jake controlling early on with lots of legdrops, Humongous doing the exact same thing later), and also some good call back stuff, like the DDT not having the effect it normally would because of Humongous' mask, which was established early on. Brilliant, simple wrestling, the kind that's my favorite. Put this on the DVD. Some people will be disappointed with it because they won't "get" it, but fuck 'em.
December 5, 200717 yr comment_5424815 Steel Cage: Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Lord Humongous (11/29/85) This is the culmination of their big feud. Jake is back to wearing the mask but Humongous would rip it off early so Jake will be bleeding heavily and he blades after a headbutt. Humongous brutalizes Jake until he takes off his boot and starts pounding on the back of Humongous’ head setting up a DDT. Humongous would kick out and sit up because that has no effect on him. Humongous then started working Jake over in the ropes when Nightmare would show up with a steel chair throwing it in the cage. Jake would eventually DDT Humongous on the steel chair to get the victory. This was fun stuff.
