Posted July 26, 200718 yr comment_5419831 I think my expectations of this were so sky high that I was a little dissapointed, still plenty nasty and fun enough to make a set. Keirn has a lot of fun heel cheap shots, and Chavo was a great ethnic babyface, all of the early matwork before the brawling ruled too. The idea of 80's lead based yellow paint getting poured into open wounds is grizzly.
September 16, 200718 yr comment_5421926 Any match where a thumb to the eye is the first meaningful heel transition is okay with me. The slow build and contrast in styles is really good here, as you see Chavo totally outclassing Keirn on the mat, and Keirn responding with lots of eye rakes, gouges, biting, etc. I know this seems like an odd comparison, but this in many ways feels like a really high-end WWE main event you would have seen during the peak of Eddy Guerrero as a top star on Smackdown -- nice slow, steady pacing focused more on the overall story arc with lots of really cool small things, where it starts off as a wrestling match and eventually turns into something more violent. Chavo is also great with the hope spots thrown in while Keirn was in control of the match. The German suplex at the end was really beautiful too. This feels like it could have gone longer and been even better, but what's here is terrific, and the post-match is great too. You just know this is setting up a Houston rematch where the Fabs will finally get the yellow paintjob they deserve. I don't know if underrated is the right word to describe Chavo, but overlooked certainly is. Phil, without the burden of really high expectations, I think you'll find that this looks better on a second watch. It's a definite DVD pick.
November 16, 200717 yr comment_5423978 I look at this match within the overall arc of the Guerreros-Fabs feud and I don't see how we can't include this match. Chavo really has been one of the Top Ten MVPs on this project and I really wish there was a ton more footage of Chavo around. This gets a thumbs up from me.
November 29, 200717 yr comment_5424664 No DQ Loser Gets Painted Yellow: Chavo Guerrero vs. Steve Keirn (1/31/86) This started out with both men just throwing bombs on each other and you could tell that this wasn’t going to be pretty. Chavo would do some good legwork on Keirn with Keirn going to the floor to regroup but he would come back in the ring for more of the legwork and even a surfboard into a camel clutch. Keirn would go to Chavo’s eyes to stop Chavo’s offense and then started his own using a lot of dirty tactics with some great punches mixed in. Chavo would come back though and we have a big slugfest. Chavo would get some nearfalls in the middle of his punching but would fuck up his Northern Lights Suplex and dropped Keirn face first. Keirn would fight back but Chavo would lock him up in a German Suplex hold for the win. Chavo would go for the paint as Keirn would load up his fist and he would KO Chavo then Tommy Gilbert but Chavo would recover and piledrove Keirn. Stan Lane would then come in but Chavo would attack him although it would become 2-on-1 and Chavo would get painted. This is a definite nomination.
