Posted August 22, 200718 yr comment_5420969 This is for the JYD's crown, and if JYD wins he gets five minutes with Heenan. More big Bockwinikle bumping, and JYD's offense looks really good at this point. JYD gets two super nasty postings, and then Bockwinkle goes to work on the bloody head. Heenan dies a bunch at the end too. Really great.
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422227 You got the date really wrong on this one. JYD’s Crown on the line: Junkyard Dog vs. Nick Bockwinkel (6/11/82) This is from Houston and if JYD wins he also gets 5 minutes against Bobby Heenan. The match starts with JYD using a lot of headbutts and punches and Bock getting to the floor as much as possible to stall and stooge around. JYD uses his raw power to dominate Bock but when JYD followed Bock to the floor, Bock ran him into the ringpost and gained the advantage. JYD is juicing now and Bock goes to work on the cut by banging his head into the turnbuckle but as he starts mounting a punching attack, JYD locks Bock into an inside cradle for a 3 count. JYD now gets 5 minutes with Heenan but Bock starts stomping JYD and Heeenan follows. JYD makes a quick comeback though and throws Heenan around for a bit until Bock comes back in for a 2-on-1 attack. Bruiser Brody then shows up and starts beating the hell out of Heenan as JYD takes care of Bock and they clear the ring. Brody & JYD embrace as the bloody JYD gets his crown. This was a fun match and post-match but not enough for a nomination.
September 26, 200718 yr Author comment_5422234 I think this set really needs a big JYD singles match, as that was what the promotion was built around for the early 80's. Is there a better JYD singles out there?
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422238 There is still more stuff left with him to be watched so we'll see although I'm getting into the fatter years on TV.
September 26, 200718 yr Author comment_5422240 TV matches and big arena matches are two different animals too
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422241 True but if we are throwing matches on just because of the guy and other better matches from people that are better represented on the list are left off because of that sorta compromises the integrity of the list. I still have the Ghetto Street Fight with Reed at the Dome still to watch. The problem I have with this match was that it lacked a big fiery comeback by JYD and just ended with that cradle out of nowhere. No buildup or nothing now granted that was a interesting finish but he could've at least broke out the big Thump.

All the versions I have seen have been really clipped up
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422245 I don't know but it's on the Barnett stuff so maybe it's complete.
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422249 I am with Kris here. If someone like JYD or Kimala does not have a worthy match then they don't have a worthy match. I can always throw them on the extras disc. Now, I think the JYD Loser Leaves Town tag will be nominated but if not, then it probably just shows that he doesn't deserve to be on a Best of Set.
September 26, 200718 yr Author comment_5422250 I don't know about that, would you want a best of the 80's set with no Hogan matches on it, if you could find 100 better Killer Bees tags? You want a variety of stuff, I personally like the JYD v. Bockwinkle match, but also think a representative of the JYD babyface main event style should make it on.
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422251 The loser leaves tag is already on the list. I am also going to nominate the DiBiase match from 6/23/82 as well since that was the big turn and a legendary match in the history of Mid-South.
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422253 IT depends what the purpose is, Phil. If I am making an anthology like Barnett's then I have a ton of JYD and a ton of Dibiase and a ton of Watts. Hell, to be honest, Barnett's set is already a great anthology. No need in making a 2nd one. The purpose here is to vote on the best matches. I like variety also but if 20 RNR vs. MX matches are better than any one Kimala match (for example) then Kimala shouldn't get on. Maybe he should have better matches. As for Hogan and the Killer Bees, Hogan actually did have really good matches and he was well represented as he should have been. If the Bees got overlooked then that is anopther story.
September 26, 200718 yr comment_5422254 If someone like JYD or Kimala does not have a worthy match then they don't have a worthy match. Promotion was built around JYD. Kimala was a big pushed heel but in terms of booking he was interchangeable with Leroy Brown or any Eli the Eliminator. That said: What I wrote about this match. JYD is working an crowned "uncrowned"King of wrestling gimmick. JYD was voted on as uncrowned King of Wrestling. And the JYD commitee (Committe for Justice Youth and Decency) decided to get him crown, which is on the line in this match I think. Paul Boesch has me confused and in hysterics. This match sets up the Houston Bockwinkle vs. Brody match which I have on a best of Houston tape and SUCKS. I have now watched a ton of Houston and shocked at what I think made the best of Houston show (I think equivalent of the WCW All Nighter type deal). Maybe the degree to which this is worked similar to Bockwinkle v Brody from Houston and the degree to which this smokes Bockwinkle v Brody largely because of JYD may warp my perception. Or maybe I'm just a mark for guys taking corner postings in really believable nasty ways. But my memory of this was that it felt to me like something that shouldn't just go on as JYD rep, but rather should go on because it was good enough to deserve going on.
September 27, 200718 yr comment_5422265 But my memory of this was that it felt to me like something that shouldn't just go on as JYD rep, but rather should go on because it was good enough to deserve going on. I absolutely support this statement 100%. If a JYD match is good enough to go on and enough people want it on, I am happy to put it on. I just don't think a wrestler should go on the set just so he is represented. If he has good-great matches then he will be represented. I hope you don't get some notion that I am a Coey-esque work freak. I am more concerned about the intent and spirit of the set than I am about any particular match going on including this one and Sawyer-Dibiase. I also wish the Ghetto Street Fight was in full because that is a JYD match that deserves serious consideration. Even if there isn't enough of the Street Fight available to deserve a nomination, it will be on the extras set anyway. You will encounter the same issue when you get to the Battle of New Orleans.
September 27, 200718 yr comment_5422289 I tend to agree with Will here. If you choose the best matches to go on the set, all the people that deserve to be featured will be featured by default.
October 27, 200717 yr comment_5423147 The story of this match sees Bock desperately trying to outsmart JYD while JYD overpowers him with ease. Initially, this started out a little too slow for my liking but after I saw the story come together I really enjoyed this. I do agree the ending was way too abrupt but I have no problem taking this to the next round.
November 18, 200717 yr comment_5424094 I think this set really needs a big JYD singles match, as that was what the promotion was built around for the early 80's. Is there a better JYD singles out there? Yes. He had a 2/3 falls match against Reed in the Superdome that's on one of the McAdam tapes. If no one has it or it hasn't been nominated, I will see if I still have it. If so, I'll send it to be converted. I feel comfortable in the fact that everyone would love it. This match I didn't care for all that much. I can handle (and like) a slow place, I can handle (and like) matches that are pretty much just punching, but this was pretty aimless and didn't do anything for me. I vote no. This isn't horrible, but it's nothing compared to Terry Funk's JYD carryjobs around the horn in the WWF. EDIT: Here is the match I'm talking about. JUNKYARD DOG vs BUTCH REED - 2 out of 3 falls from Superdome for the North American Title. The angle leading up to this is funny because Reed claims that JYD is out of shape (which is more true than just an angle). Anyway, after the first fall, Buzz Sawyer comes out and does the silliest tape job ever to Reed's head. The ending of the match is shocking. 4 *** It's on his Mid South Vol. 7. I just checked and it doesn't appear I have it, but maybe someone does.
November 18, 200717 yr comment_5424095 I will bet anything that is the JIP version of that match from TV.
November 18, 200717 yr Author comment_5424098 If we can get that in full it would be amazing, but I am suspicious
November 18, 200717 yr comment_5424130 Did the version from TV show the finishes of all three falls? Because I remember when watching this that all fall finishes were shown.
November 18, 200717 yr Author comment_5424132 Yeah, pretty much just the finishes of each fall. Enough jaw jacking Loss, find the tape and let us know brother
November 18, 200717 yr comment_5424134 I don't have it. I had a flood about four years ago that took away about half my tape collection. I had to check to see if I still had that one and I don't.
