Mid South Wrestling Volume 096

Produced:9-20-85

• Al Perez & Wendell Cooley vs. Jerry Gray & The Nightmare

Another fun tag match, Gray and the Nightmare seem to be getting a jobberish push, as they have a ton of offense, a step below nom level but really fun

• “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Paul Brown

• Steve Constance & Tim Ashley vs. Humongous & The Barbarian

Nothing much

• Ken Glover vs. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan

Ken Glover is also a huge jobber

• Dick Murdoch vs. Dr. Death Steve Williams

This is for the North American title, and was really great. It was weirdly worked as virtually everything was wrestled in a phone booth, it was like watching a pair of great bodypunching Mexican middleweights, all of the leverage and amature stuff was totally awesome, and they had a great clusterfuck finish, which ends with Reed and Murdoch teeing off on each other.

• Jimmy Backland vs. El Corsario

Backlund is always worth watching, Savio kind of sucked at this point

• Pat Rose & Karl Stiles vs. Dutch Mantell & “Superstar” Bill Dundee

Dundee sold a ton for Stiles, and Mantelll and Dundee are always worth watching.

Another Cooley/Perez match with an elaborate finish and heels going at Cooley's face like he kissed their wife. Better than it has any right to be but way below being good enough for a set.

Weird set of jobbers at this point. I assume Humperdink brought in Grey and Backlund, then there are all these Memphis guys running around Pat Rose, Stiles, Falk, etc.

I'm not sure if stiles is as tall as Phil is making him out to be or if he's just always matched up with shorter guys.

Wendell Cooley & Al Perez vs. Jerry Grey & The Nightmare (9/11/85)

This was a very fun match with Grey & Nightmare looking damn good as a team.

“Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Paul Brown (9/11/85)

Squash.

The Barbarian & Lord Humongous vs. The Daydreamers (Tim Ashley & Steve Constance) (9/11/85)

Daydreamers had a fun feud with the Nightmares in Memphis but they were jobbers here and Ashley would leave the business soon thereafter due to injuries suffered in this match after Barbarian nuked him with a diving elbow off the middle rope. Jake would show up and got fucked up again until Duggan would make the save.

“Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Kent Glover (9/11/85)

Squash.

North American Heavyweight Title: “Capt. Redneck” Dick Murdoch © vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams (9/11/85)

Reed comes out challenging the winner of this match and Murdoch is a dick to him. There was some really solid tight matwork early in the match that Murdoch would stop with his great elbow smashes. Murdoch used a great front chancery that Doc had to work very hard to get out of. Doc gets Murdoch in a rear chinlock with a great camera shot of Murdoch’s missing front teeth. Doc would get a bodyslam on Murdoch but would miss a running tackle and fell to the floor with Sweetan helping him up but would end up with Sweetan posting Reed. Murdoch would get Doc in an airplane spin but his leg would hit Tommy Gilbert so he dropped him then went for a brainbuster but Sweetan came in and used a chop to Murdoch’s throat to break up that move. Reed would then hit his diving shoulderblock to take out Sweetan and Doc would hit Reed with the armbrace. There would be a collision with Doc & Reed and Reed fell on Murdoch so Murdoch would jack Reed’s jaw then started stomping him and started brawling with Doc & Sweetan. Doc & Sweetan keep up the stomping until the Fantastics make the save and the match ends in a DQ. Reed & Murdoch keep brawling after the match with the faces trying to hold them back. This was an awesome match and segment all together with the match being solid enough to go on as a nomination and moving forward on the set.

El Corsario vs. Jimmy Backlund (9/11/85)

Squash.

“Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell vs. Pat Rose & Carl Styles (9/11/85)

Hot Stuff comes out before the match and he talks of his admiration of Dundee and the kickass trio is formed with Gilbert giving Dundee back his pink suit. Dundee & Dutch make the jobbers look great here as well.
