Posted August 28, 200718 yr comment_5421258 Brandon Bollom Tape #2 Houston matches Fantastics v. Bill Dundee/Dutch Mantel This is clipped well into the Fulton in peril section, but what we see is pretty great. Dundee and Mantel are nasty little team. I assume there is a House Show version of this match complete, so we might not need to put this on. If not, we do. Little Tokyo v. Little Coco I like midget matches, and this had some fun spots, but it was JIP. Maybe if we find a full midget match. Fantastics v. Bill Dundee/Dutch Mantel This was another match between the two JIP again, maybe even nastier as Fulton gets his mouth busted open and Dundee punches him a bunch in it. They also work the fuck over Fulton with shoo baby and have a super nasty post match beatdown, I need to see the HS matches between these two because this is a great matchup Chavo Guerrero vs. Al Madrill This had some nice blood from Madrill, but outside of bleeding a bunch, he wasn't much. Butch Reed vs. Nord the Barbarian This is a match up I have seen a lot and never liked, this was JIP and sucky Ric Flair vs. Terry Taylor It looked good, but it was JIP and we have this match up unclipped a bunch of times. Jake Roberts vs. Nord The Barbarian Good for a Nord singles matches, but that is kind of damning with faint praise. Not going to make a cut.
November 23, 200717 yr comment_5424395 El Corsario vs. Mark Ragin (8/14/85) Corsario makes his TV debut. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Mike Nichols & Dale Williams (8/14/85) Squash. The Nightmare vs. Al Perez (8/14/85) Perez puts up a fight but the loaded mask prevails in getting juice out of Perez but he still fights back until Humperdink would trip him up for the DQ. Perez would send the Nightmare out of the ring after the match as his push continues. Lord Humongous vs. Pat Rose (8/14/85) Squash. Wendell Cooley & Little Coco vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & Little Tokyo (8/14/85) Dundee with midgets is awesome and this is a fun match. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert vs. Brodie Chase (8/14/85) Spotlight match for Gilbert who was in an odd phase of being a tweener. Hacksaw Duggan vs. Mike Scott (8/14/85) Squash. “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Jerry Grey (8/14/85) Jake & Barbarian come out before the match challenging for a shot at the title and we have a standoff with Jake holding Barbarian back. They leave the ring and Reed wins the match fairly easily. The Barbarian & Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. The Bruiser & Carl Styles (8/14/85) Squash. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Wendell Cooley & Mark Ragin (8/14/85) This was a really good competitive match as Cooley is getting showcased here in preparation for what will happen on the next TV taping. “Superstar” Bill Dundee vs. Dale Williams (8/14/85) Dundee is starting his heel turn as he was pinned by a midget the week before. This match is there to further the angle Dundee had going on with Bobby Fulton. This is great stuff with Little Coco coming out in the Dundee outfit. Al Perez vs. Brodie Chase (8/14/85) Another spotlight match for Perez. Tommy Rogers vs. “Dirty” Dutch Mantell (8/14/85) More continuation of the above. This was like a singles version of their tag series with Rogers taking a good beating and making a great comeback. Dundee would show up when the action was hitting it’s peak and grabbed the top rope when Rogers was kicked out of an O’Connor Roll. This set off another Fants/heels brawl. This was a really fun TV match and I loved this feud. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell (8/4/85) This is JIP during the Fulton FIP section. This was a damn good match that it sucks we don’t have in full because it would’ve been a nomination. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. Jerry Grey & Pat Rose (8/28/85) Fants looked great here and this was a damn good match. Bounty Match: Hacksaw Duggan vs. One Man Gang (8/28/85) This was a great slugfest with both men throwing bombs especially Duggan. Duggan throws a nice clothesline to set up his comeback then hits the spear but Akbar would get involved and Gang would use the chain for the DQ. Gang would choke Duggan with the chain but he would climb up top and hit a forearm smash to break it. Duggan then got the chain and started pounding Gang & Akbar out of the ring. This was a fun brawl but it was short and Gang wasn’t as good here as he was a year later. I’ll have to say no on this one. Mid-South Tag Titles: “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Wendell Cooley & Al Perez (8/28/85) Barbarian & Jake come out wanting their shot at Doc & Sweetan and it’s made for next week but the fly in the ointment is in the ring on the other side. This is one of the longest TV matches ever that goes through a couple of breaks and it is a damn good match with everyone looking great. The underdog story of Cooley & Perez who never teamed on TV before until this match was great. The whole finishing sequence was really good and the fans loved it. Definite nomination. Mid-South TV Title: “Hacksaw” Butch Reed © vs. The Nightmare (8/28/85) This was a really good match for the Nightmare as this is his type of match being that it was a slugfest. Nightmare would load up the mask and headbutted Reed but Reed would backdrop him out of a piledriver attempt then hit the diving shoulderblock for the victory. Fun match. The Barbarian & Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Larry Clark & Wayne Lavinski (8/28/85) These guys are pissed so this is a mega squash. Little Coco vs. Little Tokyo (8/18/85) Nice midget match with all the regular spots. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell (9/13/85) Another JIP match between these teams and this one is even better than the last one as the heels are more pissed off and really brutalize Fulton. Fants are so great in this feud as they have great comebacks and show tremendous fire along with taking great beatings. Another one that if we had it in full would be a nomination. Mid-South Tag Titles: Wendell Cooley & Al Perez © vs. Mr. Kareem Muhammad & One Man Gang (8/28/85) Phil compared this to kinda a Rockers/Twin Towers match but Kareem ain’t no Bossman and the champs are surely no Rockers. Saying that though this was a good match with a great finish. Gang & Kareem actually work well together as well then they brawl after the match. Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. The Nightmare (8/28/85) Jake is the hero of the fans at this point and he is coming into his own as a babyface. Jake teases the DDT the early part of the match but Nightmare used his strength advantage to work out of it. Nightmare uses a bearhug to weaken Jake and continues to work on Jake until he gets popped with a high kneelift. Nightmare loads his mask as he gets up and headbutts Jake three times with Jake blading in clear sight as he goes to the mat. Gilbert comes to ringside complaining about the loaded mask but Nightmare takes the object out and gives it to Humperdink. Jake juices but hits the DDT flush on Nightmare and then unmasks the Nightmare revealing him as Randy Culley while Gilbert holds Humongous back. Humongous would break free though and would go after Jake but Barbarian comes in to even the odds but he turns on Jake and the monsters beat the fuck out of Jake. Joel Watts is full on David Crockett here on commentary as Jake gets destroyed. Great great stuff and the turn should definitely be an extra. Lord Humongous vs. Mike Thorn (8/28/85) Squash. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell vs. Jimmy Backlund & Mark Ragin (8/28/85) Awesome squash with Dutch burying Backlund with a backdrop driver. El Corsario vs. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert (8/28/85) Corsario wants to break boards before the match with his Superkick but attacks Gilbert then kicks him in the throat. Corsario then puts a nerve hold on Gilbert as he spits up blood. Great angle to get Corsario over. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) (8/28/85) Fants look great early on fighting off the ex-champs so Dundee comes out to be their second. Fulton works FIP here again which he has done a lot at this time and takes a beating before making the hot tag out of headscissors attempt on Doc. It turns into a 4-way brawl with Sweetan being thrown into Tommy Gilbert so Dundee gets involved but Rogers would take care of him. Rogers would get Doc in an O’Connor Roll then saw Dundee so he knocked him out of the ring but this would allow Doc to load up the brace and he nuked Rogers. This was great fun. Mid-South TV Title: “Hacksaw” Butch Reed © vs. The Barbarian (9/13/85) This was JIP and not very good as Barbarian the singles guy was not as good as the tag version. A-Train Tough Guy Match: Hacksaw Duggan vs. Skandor Akbar (9/13/85) The wrestlers are tied in a corner by Wendell Cooley & El Corsario before the match and they have to untie themselves so they can go to the attack. Duggan is close to getting free but Doc would come out to cut Akbar’s rope so he was free but Duggan would fight him off until Akbar used the riding crop. Duggan would break free and he would destroy Akbar until Corsario & Kareem would jump in. The Midnight Rider would show up with a cattle prod and cleaned house. Watts stands at the broadcast position with Duggan/Murdoch/Reed talking about Flair wanting to defend against the NA champion and this is the start of Murdoch’s turn. The whole scenario is a definite extra. Mid-South Tag Titles: Wendell Cooley & Al Perez © vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell (9/11/85) I think the Fantastics or Barbarian/Jake would’ve been better picks for the champs but Cooley & Perez at this point were having some good matches. Dundee & Dutch are so great at being on the defense and the offense here especially on the offense as they just pound the fuck out of Cooley. Perez looks good getting the hot tag taking it to the heels and yet we have another ref bump so Dutch uses Shoebaby on the back of Perez’s head. Cooley & Dundee then fight over the whip and Cooley would whip Dundee off the top rope. Perez would then put Dundee in a German Suplex for the win. This was a very fun match and should move forward. The Barbarian & Lord Humongous vs. Jimmy Backlund & Kent Glover (9/11/85) Squash. Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Paul Brown (9/11/85) Mega squash and the crowd is rabid for Jake. El Corsario vs. Pat Rose (9/11/85) Squash. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Carl Styles (9/11/85) Squash. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. Larry Clark & Jerry Grey (9/11/85) Squash. Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. The Barbarian (9/27/85) Fun brawl and probably the best Barbarian singles match we have but with a shitty DQ finish and not enough for a nomination. Wendell Cooley & Al Perez vs. Jerry Grey & The Nightmare (9/11/85) This was a very fun match with Grey & Nightmare looking damn good as a team. “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Paul Brown (9/11/85) Squash. The Barbarian & Lord Humongous vs. The Daydreamers (Tim Ashley & Steve Constance) (9/11/85) Daydreamers had a fun feud with the Nightmares in Memphis but they were jobbers here and Ashley would leave the business soon thereafter due to injuries suffered in this match after Barbarian nuked him with a diving elbow off the middle rope. Jake would show up and got fucked up again until Duggan would make the save. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Kent Glover (9/11/85) Squash. North American Heavyweight Title: “Capt. Redneck” Dick Murdoch © vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams (9/11/85) Reed comes out challenging the winner of this match and Murdoch is a dick to him. There was some really solid tight matwork early in the match that Murdoch would stop with his great elbow smashes. Murdoch used a great front chancery that Doc had to work very hard to get out of. Doc gets Murdoch in a rear chinlock with a great camera shot of Murdoch’s missing front teeth. Doc would get a bodyslam on Murdoch but would miss a running tackle and fell to the floor with Sweetan helping him up but would end up with Sweetan posting Reed. Murdoch would get Doc in an airplane spin but his leg would hit Tommy Gilbert so he dropped him then went for a brainbuster but Sweetan came in and used a chop to Murdoch’s throat to break up that move. Reed would then hit his diving shoulderblock to take out Sweetan and Doc would hit Reed with the armbrace. There would be a collision with Doc & Reed and Reed fell on Murdoch so Murdoch would jack Reed’s jaw then started stomping him and started brawling with Doc & Sweetan. Doc & Sweetan keep up the stomping until the Fantastics make the save and the match ends in a DQ. Reed & Murdoch keep brawling after the match with the faces trying to hold them back. This was an awesome match and segment all together with the match being solid enough to go on as a nomination and moving forward on the set. El Corsario vs. Jimmy Backlund (9/11/85) Squash. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell vs. Pat Rose & Carl Styles (9/11/85) Hot Stuff comes out before the match and he talks of his admiration of Dundee and the kickass trio is formed with Gilbert giving Dundee back his pink suit. Dundee & Dutch make the jobbers look great here as well. Ted DiBiase & Dr. Death beat the fuck out of Bob Sweetan for losing the Mid-South Tag Titles. Sweetan would make a comeback though and beat on DiBiase & Doc with a steel chair. Another extra. “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Broadway Joe Malcolm (9/25/85) Slater makes his TV debut. The Barbarian & Lord Humongous vs. Tony Falk & Pat Rose (9/25/85) Squash. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer vs. Richard Dunn (9/25/85) Buzz debuts and cuts a promo where he rips JCP & WWF before the match then murders Dunn. Hacksaw Duggan & Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Jerry Grey & The Nightmare (9/25/85) This was yet another fun match with Grey & Nightmare as a team. I really liked the Duggan/Jake dynamic. Mid-South TV Title: “Hacksaw” Butch Reed © vs. Bob Brown (9/25/85) Pretty much a squash. Watts buries some magazine writers on commentary. Ted DiBiase & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) (9/25/85) DiBiase & Doc were at this point in my opinion the best team in the world as they were just brutal asskickers who were destroying fuckers. Fants also look good here too when they are on offense but it’s when Rogers is the FIP is where this match is kicking because Rogers takes a hellacious beating. Doc murdering Rogers with a clothesline after a leapfrog was awesome. Rogers fought and fought to get the hot tag to Fulton but fucked up a sunset flip spot off the middle rope although they rebounded nicely. Doc missed a diving body press off the middle rope and the hot tag was made. Fulton comes in blazing with this turning into a 4-way brawl. Fants hit a double dropkick on DiBiase but he would load up the glove as Doc MURDERED Fulton with a backdrop suplex attempt that was supposed to be an O’Connor Roll. Fulton would rebound but got his jaw jacked with the glove for the victory. I loved this match and yeah it was short and yeah there were some missed spots but goddammit it this was awesome. This moves forward. Wendell Cooley & Al Perez vs. Red Raider & Carl Styles (9/25/85) Squash. Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. El Corsario (9/25/85) Akbar is gone so Corsario is on his own and it’s jobbing time. This was a pretty competitive match and Jake was awesome. Ted DiBiase & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Tony Falk & Pat Rose (9/25/85) Jesus were Doc & DiBiase awesome. Doc using the middle-rope Stampede is tremendous. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer vs. Broadway Joe Malcolm (9/25/85) Destruction with Buzz using a second rope powerslam as well. There is a great Dick Slater video before the next match that is a definite extra. “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Richard Dunn (9/25/85) Squash. Shoobaby On A Pole: The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee & “Dirty” Dutch Mantell (9/25/85) The pole was definitely the central part of this match as every time a team would get the advantage they raced for that pole. Dutch using the Fants as stairs was awesome. Dundee took a great bump off the pole when Fulton rammed his head into it. You could feel the hatred here between these two teams and the desperation to get that bullwhip. Gilbert shows up and he grabs the whip for the DQ and they whip on Fulton until Rogers makes the save and whips Dutch. Gilbert then threw powder in Rogers’ face then went back to whipping Fulton again. Rogers then comes back with a steel chair and cleans house. This was great stuff and a definite nomination. “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Steve Constance (10/11/85) Squash. They show clips of a Flair/Duggan match from Alexandria that I wish we had in full and this starts the Duggan/Sawyer feud. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer vs. Mike Nichols (10/9/85) Squash with a great pull apart brawl with Duggan.
