April 26, 200520 yr comment_1872816 Oh, and living in Toronto sucks balls...I don't think it's quite the utopia that the Bush Hatin Hippies have made it out to be. Bad Weather, High Taxes, Rising Crime...if I was going to move somewhere it would not be Toronto. I'd go to Alberta (I got accepted to go to Law School there, but didn't end up going) or out east is pretty damn nice, like New Brunswick or the like. Montreal is one of the most beautiful cities in the world too, and you don't need to speak French to live there...there's a big Anglo Population. Sell me on Alberta, Dave. I can't speak for their taxes, but the crime in the Prairies is worse than it is in Southern and Eastern Ontario, at least per capita. Last I heard, Saskatoon had the worst crime rate in Canada. Also, their weather ain't exactly great either. They have it far worse in November, in spite of the nasty rain we in Ontario get every year. I'd say one of the few things Alberta (and the Prairies) have that Toronto doesn't have is better driving. I'll get into the positives and negatives of living in Ottawa later, for the benefit of sek.
April 26, 200520 yr Author comment_1872889 Another question I had is what's considered a decent salary in Canada? Like what per year would be a livable wage?
April 26, 200520 yr comment_1872949 Dude, as a Canadian you get the living SHIT taxed out of you. I don't know how much of that an American living in Canada would have to pay, but for us, it's pretty much bend over when you get your pay check, you're about to get it good. In Toronto, I'd say you could live fairly comfortably on $35,000 and up. Anything less than that, and you're renting or living in a bad neighborhood. Marty (good to see you BTW) I used to live in Saskatchewan...Caronport to be exact. Dude...it was -50 a bunch of times...although living in Ottawa I'm sure you're used to that. Not me. You couldn't even run from the house to the garage without getting frostbite some days. I'd have to check the stats (not that I have any faith in them) but so far as I know, Toronto's crime rate is really climbing at an almost scary rate. I live 45 minutes north of the city now, so it's fine here but when I was working in "The Big Smoke" especially parts of Scarboro...yikes...look out. It was like Crack Heaven.
April 26, 200520 yr comment_1873235 Guys, guys, guys. It's all about British Columbia. Why going by the ads on tv, BC has a better economy than the rest of Canada put together! Seriously though, BC is an awesome place to live, especially the lower mainland. We get very little snow in the winter and beautiful summers. The economy is improving a bit, and we're geting the Olympics in 2010.
April 26, 200520 yr comment_1873807 It was wrong of me to make the comment about British teeth. I apologize.
April 27, 200520 yr comment_1876704 For the record, Canada isn't some great love place where everyone is happy and liberal unlike those stupid evil right wing maniacs in America. We're a big country, we're not just a bunch of hippies who hate America. In fact, we have a worse government than you do, simply for the fact that ours steals millions from taxpayers (AdScam is a wonderful thing). Don't get me wrong, I love Canada. I'm in Alberta, just south of Calgary, and I like it a lot more than anywhere else in Canada (granted, I've only visited the other provinces and never lived there). We have a kick ass economy, great environment, lots to do, a low GST and NO PST (I think with GST and PST, other provinces are around 16% added on to everything you buy, but in Alberta it is only 7%), and tons of things to do. I highly recommend Alberta.
