Posted September 28, 200718 yr comment_5422332 Mid-South Tag Titles: Wendell Cooley & Al Perez © vs. Ted DiBiase & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams (10/9/85) There is only 5 minutes left of TV time and this was really solid while it lasted. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer & “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) (10/23/85) Fants are on their way to Memphis so it’s jobbing time. Sawyer & Slater were awesome here as asskickers. Slater does a great job though of selling for the Fants. Dark Journey gets involved of course and Watts talks about how women shouldn’t be involved in wrestling except against other women. Sawyer wins with a fucking great running elbow smash after some hellacious leapfrogs. Hacksaw Duggan vs. El Corsario (10/23/85) Duggan comes out with his girlfriend to counter Dark Journey so of course she gets destroyed by Buzz Sawyer after Slater & DJ run interference. This is a definite extra. More greatness with Hot Stuff and his portrait. The infamous potato video airs and this is another slam dunk extra especially with the Jim Ross burial of WWF before it. Ted DiBiase & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. Wendell Cooley & Al Perez (10/23/85) The heels brought out spandex tights and little boots calling the champs RnR Express wannabees saying that they need the spandex to go with their look. They tell the champs that the contract says that if they loses then they have to wear the spandex but the champs tell them that the contract also says that they have to wear them too. Teddy & Doc were so awesome here with their offense and making the champs look good. The champs though were okay here but it was at this point that Watts decided he wanted to go in another direction because these guys weren’t getting over like they wanted. This was the main reason why they lost this humiliation match. Butch Reed comes out before Dick Slater’s match with Steve Doll asking about the bounty that Flair has on his head then basically calls Dark Journey an oreo. Reed then talks about how black men beat their women when they get out of line. Slater tells Reed that he isn’t going after him. Once again a definite extra. Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Rob Rechsteiner (11/20/85) Steiner makes his debut and has a real competitive match with Jake who did a great job of stringing along the green Steiner who showed that he had the tools to be a star. Gilbert then talks about his portrait again saying it was the last week of the contest. Ted DiBiase sends a message by telephone saying that he would be back and he would eliminate Dick Murdoch. Flair then cuts a promo about being fined $5,000 and calls Reed a monkey again. Bill Watts announces that Gilbert’s portrait had been stolen and the winner of the contest can’t collect it. Slater then comes out and gives his thoughts about Reed wanting his North American title and the bounty money from Flair. Duggan brings his woman back and says that him & Reed will watch her back. Dick Slater vs. Al Perez (12/4/85) Slater once again talks shit on Reed before the match and Reed would come out to counter. The match finally gets started and Slater dominated the match working on Perez’s left arm. Slater then ventured to other parts but Perez started to fight back at this time and had some good counters especially his German Suplex counter for a Slater bodyslam. Perez had Slater but Dark Journey put his foot on the rope then as Slater went for a piledriver, Perez countered that with a backdrop. Perez then got Slater in an O’Connor Roll but Slater reversed with tights to win. Fun little match. They show clips from Southwest pimping The Sheepherders. Mid-South TV Title Tournament: Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert (12/4/85) Gilbert tries a schoolboy on Jake at the bell as Jake is distracted by Humperdink and gets a nearfall. Gilbert yelling as Jake works a wristlock was fantastic. Jake does a lot of armwork in this but Gilbert would get a little spurt and kicked in the Fargo Strut but Jake got up and Gilbert went running to the floor. Gilbert would catch Jake as he rolled in the ring with a knee to the back then started his offense. Gilbert hit a cross body block from the middle rope for a 2 count then went to work with a reverse chinlock. Eddie would get another nearfall with an inside cradle then had help from Humperdink on the floor as he choked him on the rope. Jake would start his comeback though with a high kneelift and eventually hit the DDT flush for a 3 count. This was a fun match and a borderline nomination. Mid-South TV Title Tournament: “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer vs. Nick Patrick (12/4/85) Sawyer tried to get Patrick to put on the dog collar but Reed would show up at the announce table where Dick Slater was, which would get Sawyer’s attention. Patrick jumped Sawyer but ate a powerslam and lost the match. Sawyer then started choking Patrick with the chain and Reed would jump in setting off a huge brawl with Duggan also getting involved. Bill & Joel Watts kick off the first taping outside of Shreveport in Tulsa with a video chronicling the events involving Flair/Reed/Murdoch/Duggan/DiBiase/Slater. Gilbert & Humperdink offer a reward for the stolen portrait and then the Bruise Brothers reveal that they have the portrait and break it over Gilbert’s head. This is another definite extra. Mid-South TV Title Tournament: “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer (12/18/85) Since TV is being taped in Tulsa, Doc is now starting his mega babyface run. Buzz complaining about his hair being pulled is always great. Buzz tried his great leapfrog on Doc but Doc just grabbed him in the air and placed him on the top turnbuckle but Buzz would catch him with a forearm smash. Buzz then tried to go on the offensive but Doc starts doing the suicide drill on Buzz’s head followed with a diving elbow for a nearfall. Doc overpowered Sawyer using a headlock that Sawyer would use a backdrop suplex to get out of but Doc would manage to lock it back on. Buzz starts biting Doc and as Doc tried to do his version of a leapfrog, Buzz caught him in mid-air for a tremendous powerslam for a nearfall. Buzz would use his bearhug but Doc would soon power out and got an inside cradle for a nearfall. Buzz would get up and hit a suplex then climbed up top but missed his diving body press and Doc started his comeback. Doc hit some great punches and slammed him, which he sold his own back afterwards but Buzz would throw him to the floor. They then had a slugfest on the floor and the match ended in a double countout leaving both men in the tourney. This was a solid match but I just don’t know about a nomination considering the finish. This is also a judgement call. Terry Taylor Freeze Frame video airs next and that’s a definite extra. The Bruise Brothers (Mad Dog Boyd & Porkchop Cash) vs. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert & The Nightmare (12/18/85) Gilbert made this match good as he put on a great one man performance.
