  • FRITZ VON ERICH vs GENE KINISKI (10/05/1965; Southwest Sports; 00:01:09)
A great summary from Mark McNulty at Wrestling Classics on a program these two had a few years later:

“Interesting to note how Kiniski came to Houston (I'm assuming Houston because Paul Boesch is doing commentary) and did the job in straight falls before winning the NWA title from Thesz. This immediately set Von Erich up for huge title matches as soon as Kiniski came through.

Clovisman, a note from the show at Turnpike Stadium you referenced. Longtime babyface Joe Blanchard was the special referee for the match. Just as it looked like Fritz was finally going to win the NWA title, Blanchard threw infield dirt into Von Erich's eyes to cost him the match. The fans were stunned and nobody could figure out why the well liked and respected Blanchard would do something like that.

A photo was shown on television the next week with Kiniski and Blanchard standing on the sidelines together as teammates on the Edmonton Eskimoes from the Canadian Football League. On a side note, also in the photo was a young offensive coordinator named Darrel Royal who would also become a Texas legend!

Suddenly everything made sense. It was little touches of reality in booking that I really miss, today.

This was part of the buildup of Fritz again chasing Kiniski. Fritz finally got Kiniski back in the ring by putting his career on the line. Von Erich vowed to retire if he didn't beat Kiniski.

The match was signed but, unfortunately for Fritz, Kiniski dropped the belt a week or so earlier to Dory Funk Jr. Fritz won the match in straight falls, but of course, no title.”
