Posted April 10, 20232 yr comment_6002526 Fite TV has the main event on their event page as Vikingo defending the AAA Mega title against Swerve Strickland, Komander, and Rich Swann.
April 10, 20232 yr comment_6002533 Main event actually looks really cool. But then again, they did book Alberto. Jeez Konnan, really ? And as of now, no women's match at all (barely a presence on the card in the copa match) ? That's highly unusual. It's not like Taya can't work AAA anymore either.
April 11, 20232 yr Author comment_6002552 AAA has an issue brewing, they wanted to do a celebrity match with Mexican Instagram star Adrian Marcelo vs Chessman. Problem is, the Monterrey commision is strict on who they license to do matches, and Marcelo quit during the licensing exam (which is apparently a three hour ordeal). This isn't like in WWE where they can just be like "fuck the commission" and do what they want, pissing off the commission would cause major headaches for AAA so it's up in the air on what they are going to do.
April 11, 20232 yr comment_6002568 This is AAA we're talking about, so they'll likely continue promoting the match even if they know full well it isn't going to happen. Or if they really wanted to, they could probably pay to get the guy licensed. My understanding is that money talks above all else in Mexico and commissions will look the other way if they receive the proper "respect" from a promoter.
April 11, 20232 yr comment_6002569 Konan might be the booker with the best talent but at the absolute worst match making skills. Vikingo in a four way with Swerve Strickland and Rich Swann? Neither of those guys will be over beyond the typical gringo heat that most foreigners get. Incredible booking.
April 11, 20232 yr comment_6002572 I'm just wondering, is there a history of criminal organisations involved in pro-wrestling in Mexico like there have been in Japan with the yakuzas (I'm guessing now less than ever, especially since the NOAH debacle which costs them their TV) ?
April 11, 20232 yr Author comment_6002574 The closest comparison would be with the cartels, and they tend to not get involved with civilians if they can avoid it. There have been rumors that some promotions pay them money to make sure there's no violence when they run their shows, but AFAIK that's never been proven.
April 11, 20232 yr comment_6002576 That's the kind of stuff I was thinking about, especially for a promotion like The Crash, based in TIjuana. As far as the main event goes, I'm sure they want Omega for one of the upcoming Triplemania show, and I'm sure he wants to do it too.
April 11, 20232 yr Author comment_6002591 The whole reason Vikingo is a big star now is because Kenny wanted to do a match with him so AAA heated him up. Then Kenny's body fell apart before they had a chance to do it, but it ended up working out for AAA since they got a star out of it and they most likely will finally do the match this year unless shit happens again.
April 12, 20232 yr Author comment_6002633 So Konnan said on his podcast that they couldn't get Kenny for this show because he was in the middle of negotiating a new deal with AEW. It's Konnan so it should be taken with a grain of salt, but he would be in a position to know as someone booking one of AEW's partners.
